By the way, Harpua, did you see where Carl Banks says that Kellen is Chad's backup this year?

He also predicted 9 wins a month before the draft and a looong way off from any training camp or preseason action. Carl Banks is a bag of wind.

He was a helluva LB and his analyses are always interesting, don't you think?

I do like his analysis. But that isn't analysis. That's talking out of his ass.

you mean his prediction? Well, what if he's looking at the schedule we've got and discounting our other weak schedule (06) by 10% as a kind of shoot-from-the-hip rule-of-thumb one month before the draft and six months before the first regular season game -- which is a ridiculous question to be asked so far in advance.

But rather than being an ass hole about it, Banks maybe discounted 06 by 10% given the schedules...

Now, me, on the other hand, I would not venture to say how many games we will win until I get asked nicely in November.

Thing is, to make any prediction like he did with who the starting QB will be, what our record will be, stuff like that takes long months to develop and they are contingent of factors of knowledge that Don Banks simply does not have access to. Strength of schedule, in my mind, is a complete fallacy anyway. I wonder how many strengths of schedule had a rookie Jets HC going to the playoffs in 06? In my mind, strength of schedule can only be determined near the end of a season, not a month before the draft.

Abysmul, I agree with you, but then it is a radio show, they get paid to flap their gums, for crying out loud, not for dead air.

Still, all in all, not an egregious mortal sin, just palaver.

By the way, Abysmul, I don't think it is a slam-dunk that Chad will beat out Kellen, nor vice versa. I really like them both, and I think that is true of the CS as well. Who ever the winner is eventually is going to have to not only work his ASS off, but may even have to be kinda lucky as well...

I'll root for whomever gets the job, but I've seen enough from Chad the past couple of years (and waited and supported him for long years before that) that I would prefer it to be Clemens or someone else.

Did you see Jets Nation two weeks ago when Greg Buttle and the crew said Chad would not be a Jet come September. I mean they only work for the Jets and are not outsiders looking in and a Ny Frontrunner like Carl Banks. The fact of the matter is at the end of the day nobody knows who will start. We only know there is a 95% chance we will not get out of the first or second round of the playoffs IF we make it if Chad starts.

Buttle and Lucas do not know anything. Maybe Chad is going to be let go but they are just specualting. Most of what comes out of Lucas' mouth is pure comedy. He says some of the most asinine things ever spoken on TV and you'd never know he played in the NFL by his comments.

I have to agree with you on this one. Adam Shine seems to be on the ball. At the end of the day we will have to wait and see.

...and I assume you saw were I was asking for that post because you quoted another part of the same one post I call for the info in.

Here's the thing: I agree that our O-line was weak, our running game not great, and agree some what about our receivers. Yes we lack depth for sure, but both Coles and Cotch are great route runners and dangerous after the catch. What I see is them not getting the ball in stride to be able to make plays on the fly. That is not thier fault. Having to wait on the ball is because the passes are thrown late or lack velocity. Saying that Coles and Coth do not instill fear into DB's? We don't have a single QB on the roster that does that as well. Again, who's more at fault for that?

Not gonna go into Smith or Stucky. We have little to no idea what Stucky can be. He was shut down ealry after being decent in school and having an injury history that droped him to round 7. Anything from him is extra.

Smith seems to have the tools, but is by no menas a speedster. Ran around the same as Cotch did so outrunning people is not his best asset. I have yet to see enough of him as a WR to think he can fill the #3 role. We must draft someone for this.

Not so sure about Leon in the slot, but he can't be as bad as J-Mac so I'm willing to try it if we do not get a big body in round two or three for the job.

Good analysis of our receivers. I find it funny how you are able to pick out all the weak points of the O-line, WR's and running game, yet can find no fault with Chad or Kellen. Its really amazing how you can be so dead on for so much and a complete QB fanboy at the same time.

Nope I didn't and really don't care to. the talking heads are there for entrtainment mostly. Very few of them have any inside info to any team.

Your often quoting the "open competition" line. So is Carl banks right or is there really and open competition?

I don't think there are very many good QBs in the NFL. Most of those with reps today have been able to take advantage of amazing supporting casts. Most without are victimized by their supporting casts.

I believe it is very hard to find and / or develop a great QB -- even one that is promising can be absolutely ruined by a bad OL -- sometimes for years, sometimes for life.

QBs are also blamed and praised to an absolutely insane degree so that there is never any patience in their fan bases for them to develop. in NYC for example you have to have the skin of a 40 year old alligator to withstand the murderous onslaught of a bloodthirsty media and a sophisticated and unsatisfiable fan base to play your game. Eli Manning's amazing year was stunning because he was able ultimately to ignore the storm of universal condemnation, despair and venom and actually play a fairly decent off season with his team as outsider underdogs.

What can you do about QBs? Well, the first thing you can really do about them is to spend a lot of time, and intelligence, and work, and money on the line of scrimmage so that there is a context for success and development of your QBs. There is a lot of things you can do to stop the pounding on the QB and prolong the amount of time he has to do his job -- you can develop the offensive line to support the running game, and then the passing game. I know this is possible because I see most successful team do this, even though they don't always have a "great" QB.

And it is the teams with dominating lines of scrimmage that give their QBs the chance to become better, if not great.

Once the NYJs change their culture of a loser line of scrimmage (on both Offense and Defense), and their tradition becomes one of dominating the LOS and not collapsing on the LOS, then our skill players will be able to achieve more success.

In the interim, there's no harm in looking for that needle in the haystack, as long as it is in the later cheaper rounds of the draft and we don't have to bet the franchise on the next great QB choice. But in the interim, we need to keep our smart QB competence close so we can manage what the OL gives us to work with.

I don't have a lot of faith in these or any QBs as saviors. Tom Brady for example could not win the Super Bowl in spite of the most prodigious offensive weaponry in recent memory -- he had five go to receivers including Randy Moss. He hadn't lost a game in so long he could hardly remember it.

Tom Brady's offense could beat you on the ground and in the air -- whatever it took.

But this offensive juggernaut and this all time MVP star couldn't overcome an abject defeat on both sides of the line of scrimmage by the Big Uglies.

That was the story for the Pats. The NYJs story can only be changed up there on that terrible LOS too.

Tom Brady has proven he can get the job done when adequately protected.

I have no argument with that obvious statement.

But a lot of QBs are victimized by bad OLs -- Brett tried to carry teams on his back for years when he had no chance in hell mainly because of the OL's chronic failures.

How long did it take Elway to get to the SB? -- Too damned long. It was at the very end of his storied career when Shanahan finally got the line of scrimmage together well enough to get a running game going so Elway didn't have to be Superman all the time. He has to thank Alex Gibbs for that by god.

Hopefully, Callahan is going to be our Alex Gibbs.

Elway and Farve put their team in a position to win despite their teams shortcomings. They made every one else better not vice versa. They can will their teams to victory on any given sunday. When Elway and Farve have had to throw when their teams were good and bad they made good things happen. Even if we have a 1,500 yard rusher and the best o-line in the league we will not get out of the second round of the playoffs with #10 behind center.

He was drafted in 83, went to the SB in 87, 4 years later... he made it 5 times, won twice. thats amazing for a QB. Plus, "the drive" (not to be confused with montana's) is credited to him against the Browns in the AFC Championship game.
