For a "win now" team, the Millledge trade is looking very smart. In 2 years it will have lost its luster.
Jeff how old are you? Because I am reading Tug's book and he was brutal in the early going in 1973. He pulled it together, I have the same hope for Heilman.
Let me put it this way - my first Met game was at the Polo Grounds. In the four years before 1973 Tug was 32-19 with a 2.18 ERA and 8.3 K's per 9 IP, and in 1971-72 he had an ERA of 1.70 and a WHIP of 1.037 (and had been an All-Star in 1972). In other words, there was very good reason to think that his rough start in 1973 would pass. Heilman is who he is. He might not be as bad as he's been so far, but he's no Tug McGraw (RIP).
I think if you go back to 2006 you'll find posts of mine praising the job he was doing, but since 2007 he's averaging 1 HR every 9 innings, and that's just too high for my liking.
Great game tonight. 6-4 win. I'll take it. One thing though is that I cant believe that Willie pulled Santana in the 8th after giving up back to back hits. Thats you ace out there and you got to let him fight it out. Heilman came in and has been duing what he's been doing all season (it's early though). I like Heilman but he is just not getting it done right now. Willie has to give Feliciano more innings and he needs to stop treating him as just a left specialist. Great early win for the Mets though.
Agreed. He needs to start trusting his starters more. He did this with Ollie a few games ago and it came back to bite them in the ass hard.
