To get an idea how valuable good depth players are, take a look at the number of injuries suffered by the NYGs this past year and how many people had to step up and be counted. I believe they are saying that six (6) of the seven draftees in 07 made a difference for the NYGs in the playoffs. This was an unusually lucky situation for Mr. Reese and co., however, it does illustrate what can happen and what you must be able to do about it in order to win in the NFL. 53 players is barely enough.
6 out of 7? can you name those players? i'm not calling you a liar or anything; i'm just skeptical because that's unheard of.
Depth creates competition, schematic flexibility and protects you from losing your entirre season by the injury bug... But what does that have to do w/ winning football games?
I still say we need 3 starters. As the FO did last year, people on this board are over rating our talent. We need a DE, ILB and CB to start or be part of a small rotation. Outside of the OL, how can anyone worry about depth. We are not that good yet
We are 10 or 11 wins good enough with this year's schedule, even before the draft. That's all we need to be. Can't completely re-do the team in one year.
we shouldn?t reach for needs. I don?t get all this, why do everyone say we need a OLB, WR, ILB? We have solid starters in place on that positions. Why isn?t P our #1 need?
This isn't Madden. You can't just pick 3 positions you want to address and expect to get 3 starters in the draft! That's not the way you build a winner. If you build a team around a best player available approach, things work itself out. You get top athletes who on their own become starters, create depth and competition. You just dont go into a war room and force picks based on the needs of your team. It has never worked in the past and it wont work any time soon.
Thats easy Aaron Ross CB stepped up big his rookie year Steve Smith WR took some time but was huge for them in playoffs Jay Alford DT loved his sack at end of game in SB but had lots of quality time Zak DeOssie LB special teams good Kevin Boss TE didnt do much but he had a few nice plays after shockey went down Adam Koets T The 7th player dont remember seeing him once Michael Johnson S future star I believe filled in nicely as a backup Ahmad Bradshaw RB imo playoffs MVP added a spark to the Giants offense
hahah duhh... usually my sarcasm radar is on point. don't know i missed that one. thanks for clarifying.
No. We won 10 in '06 with a similar schedule and since then we have added Revis, Harris, Jones, Faneca, Woody, Jenkins, Pace and Richardson. If we can't win 10 or 11 with this schedule and this team then everbody should be fired. What are you expecting, 4 again? Why do you suppose people like McShay are predicting the Jets could get back to the playoffs this year?
Quote: "..."You always go into the draft hoping you can get more right than you get wrong," Reese said last week. "Last year we were fortunate enough to get more right than we got wrong. And we had some holes coming into the draft, so somebody had to play. So it's a little bit overrated. We hit on all of our picks, but somebody had to play. The coaches did a tremendous job getting them ready to play, so I think they deserve a lot of credit as well." Reese can downplay it all he wants, but it was a draft for the ages - at least at first glance - all the way from the Giants' first-round pick of cornerback Aaron Ross, who started most of the season, to seventh-round running back Ahmad Bradshaw, who was splitting carries with Brandon Jacobs late in the year. He found a star in the making in the second round in receiver Steve Smith. His third-rounder, defensive tackle Jay Alford, had the final sack of Tom Brady in Super Bowl XLII. Tight end Kevin Boss (fifth) stepped in for the injured Jeremy Shockey and had a 45-yard catch in the fourth quarter. And even seventh-rounder Michael Johnson worked his way into the safety rotation in the playoffs. ..." Get Ready for a new staff come draft time 2009 then. The only games that I fully expect us to win are the two dolphin games and the Chiefs game. The rest are up in the air at best. Definite Losses-2 Patriot Games and the Charger Game. Hard games that we will probably split-Tennessee, Denver, Buffalo twice and Seattle. Games we could lose that people think we should win. Please note these teams can score 50 or 3 points depending on who shows up from week to week. Cincinnati, St Louis and Arizona Team that could be darkhorse-SF was the sleeper pick to win the division before last season. The talent is there now they have to get it together. The Raiders-We have a better team but they hate us and we go there to play this year. Second Darkhorse-Miami will not lay down and die against us no matter who they field.
You mean players like Barrett, Barton, Coles, Cotch, Penny, Baker, Brick so & so forth are not quality players? Well if I understand correctly then kudos to you for fiannly seeing the forest from he trees!
