Very cool thread topic over at JI so I thought I would bring the discussion over here.

    Most Expendable Players:

1- Ben Graham- He has been VERY inconsistent and has never lived up to being the great kicker we thought he would be.

2- Chris Baker- I have said for years now that Chris Baker is among the most overrated players by Jets fans. He is simply not that good.

3- Brad Smith- He can do it all well, but can he do one thing good? I don't think he can and I don't think he will.

4- Brandon Moore- We obviously need him this upcoming season because we don't have anyone better, but there is room for improvement at the RG position. Not a bad player, but we could do better.

5- David Barrett- Same situation with Brandon Moore, we don't really have anyone much better than Barrett so we have to keep him. #2 CB will be the top need position next offseason for the Jets.

    Least Expendable Players:

1- Kerry Rhodes- I will start this list off with the best player the New York Jets currently have on the roster. Forget the position he plays, nobody on the team has played as well and as consistent as Rhodes. He is Young, physically gifted, smart, good leader and loves football. Can't lose this guy.

2- David Harris- The guy had over 20 total tackles in the game against Washington last year. That is just flat out ridiculous. Not only is he a young fantastic tackler, but he also is versatile notching 5 sacks to go along with his 127 tackles. I see big things for Harris if he can get some protection from Jenkins.

3- Jerricho Cotchery- He has played on some pretty average to piss poor offensive teams and STILL makes big plays and racks up yardage. If we can become a moderately good offensive team, Cotchery can easily be a 1200+ yard a season type of receiver. He is young and looks to be getting better every year.

4- Vernon Gholston- Yeah I know, too easy to pick Gholston, but if you think about it, it makes sense. This guy was brought in to do one thing. RUSH THE QB! Every team must have a pass rusher and if I am trying to keep my most important players...I am keeping Gholston.

5- Kris Jenkins- It was a toss up between Jenkins and Pace, but when I thought back to our defensive line getting pushed around last year, it made the choice much easier. We simply HAD to get a NT in the middle and Kris is the man for the job in my opinion. Gruden was so happy that he was traded out of the division he personally went up to mangini and thanked him. The guy is a force and is someone teams will have to spend time gameplanning for.

Our starting RG is definitely not in the top 5 of most expendable players.

Personally, I would love to keep D'Brickshaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, David Harris, Kris Jenkins (if he proves effective at the nose tackle position), and Darrelle Revis.

D-Brick = He brings solidity to a position that is regarded as the most important on the offensive line. I know people rip him for giving up sacks; give the guy some time, he may turn out great. He is a finesse pass-blocker. If he were to bulk up and work to refine his run blocking, many would be singing a different tune.

Nick Mangold = Mangold may end up being a leader for this offense in the coming years. He looks set to grow into a Pro-Bowl center.

David Harris = He is the defensive captain; this season, he could very well demand respect from the offense. He showed great flashes of talent last season, and only looks to improve.

Kris Jenkins = Kris Jenkins, if he fits into his role, could be the anchor for this defense. Last season, the defense was decent with an under-sized DT in D-Rob. The addition of a properly sized nose tackle, with a drive for success, is a great plus for our defense. He could prove to be a high priority piece to this defensive puzzle.

Darrelle Revis = Shores up one spot in a secondary full of backup level talent, with the exception of the all mighty Kerry Rhodes. He has the tools of a lock-down corner, with the ability to keep up with the game's elite wide receivers; Randy Moss, Terrell Owens. If Revis were not on the Jets, we would be fucked in terms of a proper secondary. Under Mangini's tutelage (Mangini is a secondary god), Revis is set to grow into an elite cornerback.

    Most in no order:

Bryan Thomas - Plenty of LB's, super Ghouls and Ghosts rushes the passer
    Brad Smith - Chansi Stuckey
David Barrett - Justin Miller, Hank Poteat, Dwight Lowery
Chris Baker - Would like to see 2 TE sets, but Bubba and Keller can do the trick
Abram Elam - Sorry but Eric Smith should be starting by now...and the hitman provides the pop in this defense.

    Least

Darrelle Revis - Top flight shut down corner, and we at least need one.
Kerry Rhodes - Can do anything you ask, doesn't allow the big play
David Harris - Wait till a full season
Kris Jenkins - Will stop the run
Alan Faneca - Leader, and will help propel the run game.

My 5 and 5 in no order:

Bryan Thomas - there are many players like him but this one is on the Jets
Baker - Read the reason for Thomas
Barrett - He's on the decline of his career, need a better solution
Abram Elam - He isn't polished enough, Eric Smith is just as serviceable.
    Ben Graham - Inconsistent.

Rhodes - There is no replacing the man who leads the Defense.
Harris - It was his 1st year in the league and he was playing like a 5 year pro.
Revis - Showed what he can do in the 2nd half. He is the answer to stopping most WR threats in the NFL.
Mangold - Should never get overlooked. He picked up where Mawae left off - that's not easy to do.
Coles - The Captain of the team is not expendable in the least. Coles is a warrior who never gives up, even when the team may only win 4 games. 53 guys with his gameday mentality will win me a SB.

Disagree with Moore, Gholston, and Jenkins.

Would've put Bryan Thomas in there over Moore. He may not be the starter on opening day, but he is still the starter right now and as far as I'm concerned Brandon Moore is 10000000x more valuable than that putz.

Would've put Revis and Mangold instead of Gholston and Jenkins. I at least understand why you chose those two, but I feel like we've been burned in the past so many times by big name acquisitions that I want to see it before I believe it that these guys perform. If the new guys do perform up to par though, I'd actually throw Faneca above both of them.

    Most expendable players-
Well, pick any 5 turds who are very unlikely to make the Week 1 roster.

    Least expendable players-
Nick Mangold, Kerry Rhodes, Darrelle Revis, Laveranues Coles, and Kris Jenkins

What the hell are you people talking about? Chris Baker, Bryan Thomas, Brandon Moore, Barrett as most expendable players on our roster??

I would say, Mike DeVito, Kowalewski, Drew Coleman, (do we still have Rashad Washington?), Hicks, Bowens or Spence.

Chris Baker is only expendable because we drafted a 1st rounder and picked up Bubba.. he's a great TE. If anything he's underrated; people are just throwing him under the bus cause Feinsod is a tool. Baker's handled this situation 100x better than Kendall did, we just needed Kendall more at the time.

Most: Brad Smith, Ben Graham, Drew Coleman, ... and any other riff-raff we still have
Least: Rhodes, Cotch, Mangold, Revis, Harris

Most Expendable (not including 3rd & 4th string guys.. Going mainly with guys who will see the field, and need to either be benched, or be replaced):

Abram Elam- We can do much, much better at the 2nd safety spot. Elam, to me, is a poor-man's Justin Miller, and, seeing as how Miller isn't all that good yet, Elam is nothing impressive....

Chad Pennington- I don't want to start a QB debate, but if he sees the field this year, we're moving in the wrong direction. He's valuable as a mentor, but that's not what he wants- he wants to be a starter- and that is the worst idea for our offense.

Chris Baker- I love him when he's on the field, but we loaded up on TEs in the offseason for a reason- if he continues to whine, he'll be out the door, and we will have someone capable of taking his spot....

Kenyon Coleman- This is a guy who showed flashes last year, but looked incapable of being a consistent starter in the 3-4. So long as he is on the field, the OLB behind him and the DL next to him are going to be less effective, simply because of his inability to get a consistent push.

Bryan Thomas- I'm sure I can't offer anything more than everyone else has. He's had one decent season, and been invisible the rest of his time with the Jets. It's put up or get out time for Thomas

    Least Expendable-

Kerry Rhodes- He is the best player, bar-none on our team, and, with Vilma gone, is now the clear leader on our D (as Ellis is declining)...

Alan Faneca- We saw last season what happens when you put a hole in between two young OL. They both take a step back, and the QB spends most of the game on his back. If Faneca goes down this season, we're done.

Jerricho Cotchery- We're looking for Kellen Clemens to step up and show us what he's got this season. In order to do so he's going to not only need consistent protection, but also reliable receiving options. Coles is bound to miss 1 or 2 games, the way he takes hits, and none of the guys behind Cotchery is proven. Cotch needs to stay on the field, and stay productive for this offense to have a shot.

Kris Jenkins- This is similar to my point on Faneca. We've seen what this D looks like without a NT, and it isn't pretty. Now that Robertson is gone, if Jenkins goes down, we have NOBODY to fill that void. Pouha? Oh boy. Jenkins health/production will be key to our D this year.

Darrelle Revis- Our #2 CB spot is up in the air. Revis needs to play at, or above the level he did last season, so as to compensate for our lack of anything great at the #2 spot. A consistent, lock-down #1 CB does wonders for a D. A sophomore slump, or an injury would kill us...

You should read what you write. Room for improvement does not equal expendable. You even said it in your own post!

    Most expendable
Pennington-He's done and to overpaid for a backup
Justin Miller-He can't stick his shadow and Leon can return kicks
Brad Smith-Great athlete but I would not want him starting at any position
    Eric Smith-Slow scrub
Bob Sutton-Not a player but Im not a fan of his Defense.

    Least expendable
Kerry Rhodes-One of the most underrated players in the NFl. Best on the team
David Harris-This kid is awesome. One day he could replace Rhodes as the best player on the team.
    Darell Revis-Great Young Corner
Nick Mangold-Will be a pro bowl center one day.
Jerico Cotchery-Give him a good Qb to throw in the ball and he will be a pro bowl wr.

Players that have to be replaced but do not fall in the should be replaced soon realm.

Lavernious Coles-He is one hit away from a bib and we have to find a sucessor. He will not be around when the team is Sb Ready. He is one of our best Wr alltime but we should have gotten something for him this draft before it was too late. We will watch him play out the rest of his days and be sitting there looking like idiots one day for not replacing him when we had the chance.

Shaun Ellis-His better days are behind him. Time to replacce him as well.

you think Chad Pennington is the only LEAST expendable player on the Jets roster? are you for real?

The guy has great leadership skills, I'll give him that. But that weak arm alone should make him #1 on everyone's list of most expendable players.
    Most expendable:
    1. CHAD Pennington
    2. Ben Graham
    3. Chris Baker
    4. Hank Poteat
    5. Brad Smith

    Least:
    1. David Harris
    2. Kerry Rhodes
    3. Cotch
    4. Alan Faneca
    5. Kris Jenkins

Been drinkin this afternoon I see.

  20. I still don't understand why there's so much dislike for Brad Smith and why there is so much urgency to get him off the roster.

He struggles alittle bit w/ his patterns and catching the ball..but he is DEADLY after the catch, is very good for gadget plays and is a special teams ace. Assuming Stuckey steps up...what's so bad about him being our # 4??? Geez seems to me we can do a helluva lot worse.

    I really don't get it..
