Merge this to another thread if necessary, but its time to end the what ifs and calm the Jet world down. Brett Favre came much closer to being a Jet in 1991 than he will in 2008. They have virtually ruled out pursuing him if the Packers trade or release him. "It's a long shot right now that the Jets have any interest. I wouldn't spend any time on that," an NFL source familiar with the Jets' thinking told the Daily News Saturday. "I can't rule out 100% they won't have interest, but I would say it's 90%-95%. I would be very surprised if he wound up with the Jets." New York Daily News http://www.fannation.com/truth_and_rumors/view/57671
Why pursue Favre when you have the 2006 Comeback Player of the Year on your team who can become the 2008 Comeback Player of the Year?
Haha, I feel like you shouldn't be allowed to win that more than once. That would be pretty funny though.
Oh Yeah! Maybe Chad will put together another 17 TD 16 INT Comeback Player of the Year award winning season! That's MUCH better than anything Brett Favre could do!
Chad is Bad We need a strong arm(Favre/Clemens)just to loosen up the "D" to make the ground game go. With Chad it will just be the same ole Jets-it must be Clemens.
Why does everyone like Favre? I want to puke every time I hear his name on ESPN. Why didn't they suck off Marino or Montana this much when they retired??
Why the hell would we make a run at Favre when we’ve already got a young gun like Chad on the roster?
Mike and Mike this morning were sort of mocking the whole Favre/Green Bay thing. They provided this scenario: What if we called up our boss here at the studio for 8 days in a row and told him we won't be coming to the studio the next morning. Then come in and do the show anyway. At the end of the week, get on the microphone, sobbing, and tell the entire world you're finished and have finally decided you won't be back. After they start grooming your replacement, call up the boss again and tell him you want back in.
Athletes get addicted to the limelight and can't wean themselves off the rush it gives them. He knows he's ready to retire and his body is basically telling him it can't do this anymore, but he so loves the spotlight on Sunday afternoons as "the starting QB" that he can't give it up. This explains why he wants GB to start him. He doesn't want to do it if he's the backup, only if he's the #1. So, yeah, it could be a question of money, but if it were purely money, he'd be negotiating with GB to pay him more and he'll sign up for the #2 slot. This has gotten so out of hand with Favre that I now have some serious doubts about this guy's mental stability. I'm dead serious. He probably needs some serious counselling. After further review, I don't think the Jets should get involved. We'd be buying into a f@cking bag of worms.
This is a very valid point. It is the same one I use to talk about bands that say they are retiring...and then they always come out on tour again. Some examples off the top of my head (Phish, Eagles, Ozzy, George Michael). The dude was basically a functional heroin addict (pain pills) for part of his career. He is also an American icon. For a human to be able to integrate his or her own iconic status with the person he or she really is, is extremely tough. I wouldn't doubt that a part of his substance abuse was due to this very problem. Regardless of all that...I'm happy he's not coming here, it would only set us back in the end.
I think Favre has put the Packers in a very difficult and unfair position. After he insisted yet again that he would be retiring, they officially named Rodgers as the starter. now Favre comes back demanding they give the job back to him or unconditionally release him so he can go play with a division rival, like Minnesota or Chicago. If they insist on him coming back as Rodgers' backup, they appear ungrateful to one of the franchise's great players. Green Bay can't win no matter what they do.
Once again he is holding that team hostage in a way. He's done it for the last several years, both him and his buddy Strahan with the Giants. They could never move forward with their plans and replacements because both players were always laboring and dragging out their decisions. Favre finally retires, Green Bay moves on, and then he changes his mind. Again. No player is above the team, I don't care what their stats say.
^^you guys are in the wrong thread...this is the Jets don't want Burt thread...not the Burt wants to unretire thread.
Who the hell is Burt? But yeah, I would agree with setting us back. First of all, if he came here, it would only be on the condition that he'd be a guaranteed starter. Clemens would have to take a seat on the bench, in which case, we still do not get to give this young man the reps in TC with the first team and then see if he develops in regular season. Pennington sits also as the #3, I suppose, or we trade him for a 6th or 7th Rounder, which is probably what would happen. The biggest setback then is, we have no QB of the future, and we haven't groomed Clemens. Then if Favre stinks up the field, we put an unprepared Clemens in and well... Of course, if Favre leads us to a SB, then I have to eat my words. But it's pretty obvious by now that he's not coming here... no way in hell now.
I saw on Mike Lombardi's blog today that he thinks the source is actually Tanny. Interesting read if you get a chance: http://www.lombardionfootball.com/2008/07/about-ten-years-ago-i-read-good-life.html
