We traded Vilma to the Saints for a 4th which can upgrade to a second in 2009. But Shockey was traded for the 2nd and 5th. Does that mean we have no chance at the 2nd round pick?

Well, I don't think the notion that we have a chance at a conditional 2nd rounder was ever confirmed by the team, so it was probably a load of horse shit if the Jets don't contest this.

Boy, that is interesting. That is what I remember reading several times at the time of the trade.

    This was from ESPN:

If you ask me, I think the Jets are the ones that are gonna get fucked over in this deal, because we have the 'conditional' pick. Whereas the Giants have the Saints 2nd rounder straight up. So, I think the most we'll get is their 3rd. What i'd like to know is what happens if Vilma makes the Pro Bowl. I'd be pissed if we don't get that 2nd rounder.

Also, it seems a contract extension needs to be in order for us to get that 2nd rounder. I guess this means the Saints won't look to re-sign him for the long run.

yeah, the thought of Vilma recovering and wreaking havoc, while we get nothing in return, is cringifying.

    Clayton reported it on ESPN.com...

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3270701

"It was the first time in his football career that he had a season-ending injury. Now, four months removed from surgery, Vilma, was traded to the New Orleans Saints on Friday for a conditional fourth-round choice. The Jets could receive a second- or third-round pick in 2009 depending on how much Vilma plays and if he signs a contract extension. Talks have not started on a contract extension for Vilma, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal."

We don't get nothing. We get a mediocre draft pick and cap room.

OK Folks, here is the conditions to the Vilma Trade.

The 4th rounder in 2008 is ours. Period.
The Pick in 2009 is conditional on his playing ability. It can either be a 3rd or 2nd round pick depending on his success.

A 3rd/2nd and 4th for Vilma are better than what Miami got for Taylor and what the Saints got for Shockey- two players with better track records but longer careers.

    Stop Complaining.

how the hell can they trade a pick that potentially doesn't belong to them?

Vilma will not be even entertaining this thought until after the 2009 season... He'll be a free agent... so he can get paid if he has a big year by the highest bidder...

For the Jets that means we dealt him for 4th Rounder... which will most likely change to a third, based on playing time if he stays healthy... the only way it could have become a second is if he played the full year and signed an EXTENSION

    Good finds

It sounds like they get a 3rd. I have to assume the talk of the 2nd were writers just shooting their mouths off like the had some inside information.

If all they are giving up next year, no matter what, is a 3rd, this was a very good deal for the Saints. IMO Vilma will do very well in their 4-3. This is as valuable as Vilma will be to them, he wasn't worth anything to us.

We already received a pick for Vilma. There were 2 parts of the trade:

    1) The Jets received a 4th round 2008 draft pick from the saints.

    2) If Vilma reaches playing incentives AND agrees to a contract extension, the Jets will swap their 2009 4th rounder for the Saints higher draft pick. Whether this was a 2nd or 3rd was never confirmed, it was only speculated to be a 2nd. It is most probably a third, which is still a good trade.

How many 2nd rounders do the Saints have next year? Only one?

It's still possible for that extension to occur isn't it? I mean, it seems crazy that they can have this conditional trade still pending and trade away a piece of that.

The 2nd rounder is only if Vilma meets all the requirements by the Saints. Most of which aren't for public viewing. I didn't add the part about the contract extension. My bad.

90% certain we will be getting their 3rd in 2009.

or maybe the Giants get the Saints' pick, and if Vilma's play meets the conditional stipulations, then we get the pick from the Giants (originally from the Saints)?

okay, i re-read this and that just makes no sense whatsoever. nevermind.

I understand it's conditional, but the point is that it doesn't sound like those conditions are impossible to still fulfill. Unless their are conditions we don't know about that already nullify the 2nd round possibility, this shouldn't be a trade they can make.
