There were lots of reasons for 2007? Yeah, the OL. Multiple issues flank Jets before training camp opens this summer BY RICH CIMINI, DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER, Sunday, July 20th 2008 ?? People close to the team don't expect that [who wins the competition] to be a problem because Pennington and Clemens like each other and because they're well-liked by teammates. Some players give the impression they're just as eager as the fans to see the battle play out. "For most guys, it's not cut and dried," said one player, speaking on the condition of anonymity. ?The Daily News contacted six experts - a personnel director, a scout, a current Jets player and three analysts - with three saying Pennington gives the Jets the best chance to win. The other three were non-committal, claiming they want to evaluate them in the preseason before choosing one. ?Former Giants linebacker Carl Banks, a Sirius Satellite radio analyst, said Pennington is a better fit based on the anticipated changes to the offensive scheme. After going into last season with a wide-open approach, using three- and four-receiver formations, the Jets plan to get back to basics. More two-back sets. More emphasis on the running game. Power over finesse. "From all indications, it will be an offense that requires a great deal of play-action and decision making, and that's where Chad Pennington gets the nod," Banks said. "There's not going to be an emphasis on the quarterback's arm." ?[Pennington] was awful last season in the clutch, throwing four interceptions and no touchdown passes in the fourth quarter when the margin was seven points or less. But he played most of the season with a high ankle sprain and, although Pennington never made it a public alibi, he told friends it was like playing on one leg. A bad wheel can have a big impact on a quarterback's mechanics; it may have contributed to some of the balloon passes that were intercepted. Clemens could've placed a stranglehold on the job, but he struggled with his decision-making, pocket presence and accuracy, finishing 3-5 as a first-time starter. Like Pennington, he didn't have much pass protection and - get this - he was victimized by 17 drops, according to STATS, LLC..." I am more interested in how accurate Carl Banks' prediction is about that OL this year. A dominating OL will give whoever wins (as if it mattered) the QB competition a chance to succeed. The jury's still out on that OL, until we know for sure that reality has been accurately dictated by the resumes.
Do you guys that bash Pennington actually watch the games? Let me tell you all something, if the OL comes together in camp, and thruout the 4 preseason games, CVhad starts for theJets .........hands down..period!...............Throwing off his back foot?............Chad, and anyone else that has played QB for us lately, has had no chance with the paper dolls protecting them. You took notice what Brady did in the Supe? He Lost! Given time to execute....Chad will be the one. I say this, and i am not a Clemmens basher just dont think he's ready.[/I]
are you new here or something? I've been watching Pennington since he took over for Testeverde....that guy cannot throw the deep ball...and with all the injuries he's incurred over the last couple of seasons...it's gotten worse. He's not a clutch performer and throws too many interceptions. His tenure as the Jets' starting QB, hopefully, is over.
Yes I watched the games. As a fan who has no faith in either and roots for Brett Ratliff I watched Pennington, with time, throw game sealing pick 6's in the final 2-6 minutes of football games more than once. That is where the basis of most Chad hating resonates.
He re-worked his deal heading into 2006, you expect him to keep doing it? he also offered to renegotiate to help the Jets get Coles back but the Jets declined. When has he offered excuses? He's telling everyone how he's trying new things, that's not an excuse. The man never makes excuses even when he was hurting.
He was throing harder in 2006 than at any point in his career. Watch the 1st half of '06 and you'll see a different QB. He wore out as the season went on but if he can get back to the way he was throwing the football early in 2006 we'll be in excellent shape.
Two points to make here. First, to compare Pennington to Taylor is assine. Taylor got traded because he made it clear to Parcells and the Dolphins that he preferred dancing to OTAs and preparing for the upcoming season. All Pennington has done is work to get stronger, improve his mechanics, and continue to learn the offense. I didn't see Pennington on TV this Spring nor did I see him publicly challenging the team or the FO. Second, to say that the Pats are licking their chops at the prospect of facing Pennington is also somewhat naive. No QB has given the Pats a harder time in Foxboro over the past 6 years than Pennington. For all his physical limitations, he has played the Pats very tough in NE. He beat them in 2002, lost by 5 at home in 2003, lost by only 6 at NE in 2004, in 2006 he lost to them at home by 7 and beat them up in Foxboro, and in 2007 he lost by 10 in Foxboro after Clemens spotted the Pats a 7-0 early lead. The only games that weren't close were the home game in 2004 and the home game last year.
Nice post but the only thing wrong was that Vinny was the QB in Foxboro in 2003. Chad was still weeks away from coming back from the broken wrist.
Since 2002 NE has lost only 9 home games. Only the Jets, Denver and Indy have beaten NE twice at NE and only Peyton Manning and Chad Pennington have led their teams to 2 road wins at NE. In 2002 NE lost at home to Denver on October 27th, after that game until October 2nd, 2005 NE lost ONE home game- To Chad and the Jets and that was basically w/ the division title on the line for the Pats. Chad has led the only non-NE AFC East Champs since 2001.
He tailed off precipitously even before the bye. I think it was the Cleveland game. Even with the rest he never got his strength back. Look at the Chicago game. Yeah, tough D there, but he's playing at home, well rested, and couldn't do dick. And last year? Heh. Btw the point about his excuses is he tries to say he can in effect fix the fact that he has a 12 year old girl's arm through some adjustment in his technique. Well, why a vet of his length in the league still needs to be studying his own technique (which btw I think is mostly horsepoop anyway - he's not doing much of that, if anything) at this point aside, that's not the issue. NO CHANGE to his technique is suddenly going to give him even average arm strength. He just needs to admit he's got a lousy arm. Or just shut up about it. Anything else is making excuses.
Which QB has the most losses in NE since then? The fact that you're mentioning Pennington in the same breath as Peyton Manning tells me that statistic is completely meaningless. I don't care if Pennington has had 2 road wins in NE since 2001. I'm 100% positive that NE is not worried about Chad frikin Pennington.
I'm pretty sure he knows he doesn't have a great arm, I'm happy he tries to do thing to strengthen it. I think his lack of arm strength has been overblown for most of his career. He's not a down the field passer b/c he doesn't like to take chances but he can get it down the field- just look at Cincy last year or SD in the '04 playoffs when he had the torn rotator cuff. Chad is 2-1 as a starter in Foxboro having led us to wins in '02 and '06 and a loss in '07. The '03 loss was started by Vinny, '05 Bollinger and last year Clemens. Since 2002: Brees 1-0 Frerotte 1-0 Plummer 1-0 Favre 1-0 Griese 1-0 CHAD 2-1 P. Manning 2-1 K. Stewart 0-1 T. Green 0-1 Culpepper 0-1 Vinny 0-1 McNair 0-1 Q. Carter 0-1 Leftwich 0-1 Hasselbeck 0-1 Boller 0-1 Palmer 0-1 Ken Dorsey 0-1 A. Brooks 0-1 Bollinger 0-1 Simms 0-1 Losman 0-1 Harrington 0-1 Grossman 0-1 Kitna 0-1 Carr 0-1 Rivers 0-1 T. Edwards 0-1 D. Anderson 0-1 J. Campbell 0-1 Feeley 0-1 Clemens 0-1 Roethlisberger 0-1 Lemon 0-1 K. Collins 0-2 Holcomb 0-2 Bledsoe 0-3 Fiedler 0-3
^ So you believe NE is worried about Chad because he won a game there in 2002 and 2006? First, let's just throw 2002 out the window in terms of NE being worried about him now. He's not the same QB as he was in 2002, and I think everyone can agree on that. Believe me, I wish he was that guy still. In the 2006 game he threw for 168 yards, 1 td and 1 int. It's not like he lit up the Pats defense. The Jets won a defensive battle. Also, did the Pats torch the Jets w/Pennington at QB in the playoffs in '06?
I am so sick of hearing how classy Chad is. what a great teamate, what a great person, what a tough guy.... etc. You not allowed to criticize the man without prefacing these statements. Are we football fans interested in rooting for winning football teams or looking for a husband for our daughters. I don't care how Chad acts. He can no longer take my football team to the big game and that's all that matters to me.
I don't believe NE is worried about anybody but I'm sure they are all rooting for Clemens to start over Chad. So 2002 doesn't count and '06 doesn't count b/c he didn't have eye popping #s? He led us to the victory, that was the LAST time an opponent won in Foxboro. it's funny, when Chad won in 2002 NE would next lose at home in 2005 and Chad led a win at Foxboro in '06 and we go into '08 w/o NE losing a home game since then. Did they torch us w/ Chad? The final score looked alot worse than game was. It was a TD game w/ about 5 mins to play. We were very much in that game in the 4th qtr, it turned on a fluky fumble. I don't think we would have won even if that fumble didn't happen bu it would have been a much closer game.
see, this is the problem right here. he's 32 and been in the league for 8 years. aren't you tired of saying, "well IF he can do this and IF he can do that, then we'll be okay"? because you now sound like a broken record, saying it every year.
What I do know is that every mostly healthy yera he's had w/ the exception of last year he has led us to the playoffs. last year Brady wouldn't have been able to win w/ our OL so I'm willing to give Chad another chance. If KC beats him out I will root hard for KC but if Chad beats him out I HOPE Jet fans will root for Chad though I am pretty sure you guys will be rooting for him to fail to get KC in the game.
