While walking in the park, I was listening to Imus In The Morning and Werner Wolf played an audio tape of Eric Mangini's response yesterday to the fact that Favre had said his shoulder was "a little tired."

To my surprise, Mangini said, "Well, everyone's a little tired. We're all a little tired from these practices. That's the way it is." In other words, he pretty much dismissed that comment from Favre.

So Imus says, "What? Isn't he supposed to be kissing Favre's butt?" And someone else chimed in and said, "No! Why does he have to kiss Favre's butt?"

I thought it was pretty funny, but it also shows you Mangini is not about to put Favre on a pedestal. I guess he figures, if he cuts some slack for one guy he should be doing it across the board. He's right. It's a team thing. No favorites, not even Brett Freakin' Favre.

    Meh.

    Escucho, amigo.

Yesterday during practice Favre walked over to Mangini and started chatting him up. Very few players have done that in tc the last three years. Chad has done it on a rare occasion. usually, mangini walks over to a player if he wants to talk to him during practice.

Favre is a star, and he is who he is- if he wants to walk over to the HC to say something he will. And he got plenty of down time yesterday after stating he was tired. Imus is an idiot.

well thats a good stance to take, he can't become bigger than the team, he just needs to be a player on it. this fosters chemistry, team spirit, and all that good stuff.

he really should limit his throws in practice though. Favre's gettin' old.

I have no idea what "cutting slack" would be here, but I certainly hope they limit his throws, just as almost all older QBs limit their throws.

Brett Favre is what, older than just about everyone on the field, including the OC and HC, and GM?? That would be like telling your dad to go stand in the corner. I don't see anyone really kissing his ass, but he's been around a long time so I don't see him being treated like a rookie either.

The funny thing is that Mangini is giving him some slack...he cut down his throws in the last few practices

Yeah, I thought that was an interesting thing too. I think Mangini said what he said at the mike to "go on record" that way, but then cut him some slack anyway. But I did think it was interesting the other day when Favre had to take a lap. In fact, he's had two laps now... him and Mangold... over a couple of botched snaps.

But Favre took the laps like a true sport, so that was good. He had even, at one point after the first lap incident, said, "I don't think I've ever had to take any laps ever in my career." Yet, here he was, taking a second lap.

It's all good stuff. Favre's not about to appear to be a Prima Donna and Mangini is not about to publicly show the rest of the team that he's giving Favre any special ass-kissing treatment, even though I do think he did cut him some slack. The drills yesterday were very short passing drills, and not many of them either.

It also doesn't sound like Mangini is giving Favre much time on Satruday night against the Redskins. I believe he said Favre will only get about 8-10 reps or so.

I expect to see a lot of 11 this week, and I think it is an important pre-season game for him.

That's exactly what I thought...a little smoke as the remedy to Burt's candor.

I also don't think team things like penalty laps are included in giving slack, but I do think he will get some.

Anything blatantly outward like laps or team activities will be kept equal. I think the slack will come in things that can't be proven, like reps or throws, since Mangin can just say he wanted to give other QBs work, or work on the run game.

I'd almost rather he didn't play this week. If he hasn't been conditioning this offseason...it'll be dangerous for him to play full-speed after only a week of practice. I would think any smart coach would feel the same. I'm not so sure Woody isn't becoming Jerry Jones Jr. and forcing the start for PR.

its the smart thing to do to give favre some rest. yes it is important for him to get the timing down with the receivers. but favre is an all time great and im sure he will be able to work that out.

right now it is more important for him to actually know the offense than throw a million balls in practice. he can learn the system without throwing any passes. so obviously you let him take it easy for a few days until his arm is no longer fatigued.

we should start the game with clemens and the 2nd string offense. then, when 'skins sit their starters, put favre and the first string in for the rest of the game. yup yup. this would give favre 2-3 qtrs to play live ball with the first team but at the same time, aint no 2nd string defense gonna lay a mit on him.

plus it would be fun to watch coles, cotch, keller, and favre air it out against the 'skins 2nd and 3rd teamers.

Because conserving your #1 QB's arm is a stupid thing.

Favre and his body know how to manage themselves. Mangini knows that. Everybody on the team knows. And while he may be smart as any player out there he just needs to not make the mistakes and show discipline because with that arm attached to that shoulder is very tempting to just air it out and stick it in places normal guys wouldn't attempt.

As far as physical situations goes the older guys benefit from down time in certain situations. Brian Westbrook doesn't practice all week and goes out and gets 100 on the ground and in the air. I think this is good for Favre and he has a special caliber of play and I wouldn't worry. (crossing fingers)

770 is the only damned channel my Sony Walkman will pick up clearly... too much static from nearby electric wires to pick up the Fan or 1050.

I'm over 40 and Imus still isn't that funny to me. It was a better show when he had Rob Bartlett on there doing his Ted Kennedy impressions and impressions of that Hispanic dude. I'd rather listen to Mike and Mike but again... it doesn't come in good.

I, too, was shocked that Chris Russo is no longer on the air with Fatcessa. The morning paper just contained the news of this, but offered no reason for the split. I thought they were a pretty good commentary team overall, but they used to pretty much piss me off as a Jets fan because it was obvious neither one of them has any use for the Jets.

The only time Mike and Chris spent any time talking much about the Jets was when Bill Parcells was aboard. Mike is simple infatuated with anything Bill Parcells. Parcells could go over to Francessa's house and nail his wife and Mike would think that was just fantastic. the guy walks on freakin' water, so when he was with the Jets, it was all Jets talk from Mike. After that, he and Chris went back to their Giants Love-in.
