Looking over the current "Pre 53-man cutdown" roster, I can't but help think that the Jets seems to have gotten pretty deep across the board. There are going to be some seriously difficult decisions that the coaching staff needs to make for the 53-man roster....and that's a good thing in my book. Having said that, I just wanted to see what the majority of this forum's readers think as to which unit has the most depth.
The QB position. oh and saftey too. Kidding. I think in terms of receivers we can do well, if they hold onto the ball. Also in the LB dept - Take out Harris, Barton, Pace, Thomas it leaves Gholston, Bowens, Murrell. Those 3 are good backups. Pace and Bowens can play either LB position. Even TEs got better - Keller, Baker, Franks, and if they keep Pociask. I like Pociask, He can block better than Baker and he seems stronger after the catch.
TE seems to be really deep but Keller is still unproven (though promising) and Franks is getting old. I picked QB because not only is it the most important position on the field but also with the emergence of Ratliff this unit now seems set. Think about it, some teams like the Chiefs, Dolphins, Falcons, and Ravens would likely be content to start any one of our 3 QBs. I can't really recall any team in history with that kind of depth at QB.
I think it has to be LB. Keller is an H-back and not a TE as we have discussed in another thread and as far as our QBs are concerned I'm not sure any of them would survive if Favre goes down.
It doesn't matter if Keller is an H-Back, he's still being used in a TE role which is meshed with the H-Backs and we are deep there. Look at our backups at ILB and I think you'll rethink the depth at that position. The OLBs are solid though.
I don't think he is in there to block anybody. The plays I remember when he is in, either Baker or Franks is in there too. That doesn't make him a TE even though there is no official H-back designation in the NFL.
So what? I don't get how that makes our depth weaker at TE? Who says we need a blocker at the position? We have someone there who is going to make the offense better, that is good enough for me.
I was worroed about our ILBs going into this season but I think Bowens can back up inside and I believe Pace can move inside too. I like Cummings as well even though he didn't really stick out as much against the Giants as he did earlier.
I wish I could say we were deepest at D-line, but we are deepest at Linebacker, and we'll need that rotational depth.
The CS has had Bowens at ILB for most of preseason. He shed 10 lbs and he says he feels a lot younger than he does at 30. He is faster and more agile with the weight loss, but since he gained speed I can see him maybe lining up at OLB and rushing the passer. Having that dual position threat is exactly what the CS is looking for.
it's interesting, because depth and talent are really two different things. The way I look at it, we have the most depth at positions where it is difficult to win a job, i.e.: CB and QB, but that doesn't mean they are the mnost talented position, just that they all suck equally. Plus with all theinterchangeability these players SHOULD have, it's hard to say who does how much, like if POteat only comes in on 3rd down is he more or less important than, say, Lowery who only plays, say, base D. I think LB has the most depth because we can't even get the sixth overall pick on the field - and its not because he sucks. EDIT: reading the above few comments, I am just so excited about this LB corps. Bowens is like Vrabel, a crafty vet who can plug any hole and the ability to move Pace inside (maybe) and get Thomas, HArris, Gholston and Pace on the field at the same is mind-boggling, even before you consider where we came from.
I wouldn't know any other way to interpret this. "The way I look at it, we have the most depth at positions where it is difficult to win a job, i.e.: CB and QB, but that doesn't mean they are the mnost talented position, just that they all suck equally." Seems to say to me, at least, that our CBs and QBs suck equally. Actually it say that to anybody that reads it. But I do get your point. Just that I don't think QB and CB were good examples.
^^^ I think if "depth sucks equally" instead of "all suck equally" would have cleared up the confusion. my .02
I think that the CS will have a really difficult time trimming down the CB's. Darrelle Revis, David Barrett, Hank Poteat, Dwight Lowery, Drew Coleman, Ahmad Carroll and Justin Miller. Release any one of these seven guys and the Patriots' depleted secondary will be their next stop. Revis is the unquestioningly the Man. Barrett just restructured his salary and took a pay cut. If he gets cut, do you think he will not find some measure of vengeful satisfaction going to New England? Poteat is familiar with both team's defense and is steady and indespensible. Lowery will be our next 4th-Round golden nugget and will probably start at some point this season. Drew Coleman has steadily improved and has continued to make plays in the preseason. Ahmad Carroll is an inspiring story of redemption who plays like a man clinging onto his dreams with all of his might. Justin Miller, a superior athlete whose special teams contributions gives the Jets one of the strongest (if not the strongest) return game along with Leon Washington. With that being said, who among the CB's will not survive the 53-man roster cut down?
I think Barrett stays due to his flexibility, maybe Carroll but I love the way he runs at opposing special teams. Miller, if he doesn't get better, should go on the PUP and come back week 6 when healthy. I think Carroll gets cut regardless. Pats will pick him up before week 2 for the same ol spying BS that both teams do.
