IMO the only other play would be a screen pass to Leon. Its a high pct. pass that should be completed and then it just turns into a running play and keeps the clock going.
If you are the opposing coach, Mangini did exactly what the opposing coach wants you to do. Run when Brett Favre is your quarterback.
that last sentence was my sentiment when I was watching the game. Who better to be playing D against during the 2 minute drill than Chad. He never gets it done, and proved it again. The only knock I have it that the D didn't force him to throw the football to the outside where INTs are possible. He threw it over the middle time and time again. The one time he threw it outside it was picked.
I will say this, the reason for the under-performance at the end was the heat. That team looked gassed. They played soft bigtime because of it. I have been living here for 14 years and that was about as hot as I can remember it. To be sure the Fins played in the same heat but they sure as hell did not look so great until the Jets tired or more like withered at the end. Well, that and not having an NFL kicker hurt made this a much closer game then it should..............excuse or not, it is what it is. You never realize just how important a kicker is until you do not have one! With an NFL kicker there was no drive right after the missed field goal. That is a 10 point swing right there and then the extra points................. etc. etc. Edit: Again about the heat thing...... Jenkins at the end of the game was on the sideline with his jersey out downing fluids. In the beginning of the game he was constantly 3-4-5 yards in the Fins backfield. FWIW.
Our use of personnel was hardly stellar. Shottenheimer kept going with Leon in bad situations when the Phins' fast LBs were shutting him down, and kept trying to run Jones up the middle when there were no holes he could exploit. Jones doesn't hit the hole with any speed at all. We could have run Jones to the outside all day long and had another 40 yards. I think our talent is good, but coaching is something of an issue.
I like a lot of the stuff he does, but at times I am reminded of Hackett, just stubborn and pigheaded when his plan isn't going right, and his halftime adjustments are hit or miss a lot of times. I remember thinking about the repeated bad playcalls for the running game in 2006 and the same thoughts were going through my head yesterday.
I agree with this article whole-heartely. If you have the chance to win the game, YOU TAKE IT. It is things like this that have defined this "scared" franchise for years. NO F--KING BACKBONE. I ask you in that spot what would say Belichek or Parcells do. They would sieze the moment and win the game right there and then. this is why we got Brett Farve, Right? Not to play the "Herm Edwards" end game. You take Miami or any team BY THE BALLS when the oppurtunity is there because there is no gaurantee in that situation. CLEARLY at the end the momentum was on the side of the phins.
If this trend does continue, I hope the new QB has a say in it once he knows the whole playbook and is comfortable with his receivers and O-line.
Exactly what I've been saying! There are too many risks involved in throwing a pass in that situation, risks that we couldn't afford to take. We weren't vying for a playoff spot with this game, we were trying to win the season opener. There's no reason to try to force a pass when you can just give it to the halfback and try to run the clock down, make them use the time out, and leave them with less time to try and drive.
Not only just that play, which did suck. But the whole second half was terribly conservative. Being a new Jets fan I am a little disapointed by the coaching. But coaches can be rusty just like players.
