This is the kind of performance I expected from Mangini and company at the start of the season. (I must admit, I never expected this good of a performance from Favre at this stage with this group.) Finally, some aggression. I hoped they would go for it on the 4th and 1 in the closing minutes (take control of winning the game instead of leaving it up to your defense.) What a pleasant surprise when they went for the whole thing...and got it! Wow. But the most encouraging thing I saw all day was the play calling in the red zone: Gone were the fade patterns and the "excuse me" passes short of the goal line....Look at the Jets receivers running crossing patterns through the end zone...just like a real NFL offense...it's about it's about time they found some real scoring plays in that tome of a playbook. I am too shocked to be annoyed that it took this long for the coaching staff to show some imagination. I expect the same effort, imagination and balls in two weeks vs the Bengals, and every week thereafter. They don't need to win every game to make old Georgie happy, just play like their trying to win every game. Like they did today.
I am going to agree with you because Ratliff looks to be a future QB in this league and if Kellen Clemens keeps looking like he is lost during pre-season then it's the other Brett that will replace Favre once he decides that he will really hang up the cleats.
 That's so true... and I'm right there with you. We've been bitchin and moaning on the shell that Manumbnutz had crawled into and finally, FINALLY We actually get our wish... I would not be surprised if Favre has something to do with talking these guys into letting him 'let it loose'...... maybe not but who knows.
True, I was critical, but Favre was just getting my collateral shots. My issue was not with Favre, it was with Mangini and team. Today's coaching performance was outstanding, and as a deeply invested fan and customer, that's what I expect every week, and when I wasn't getting, I was pissed off. I don't even care that they gave up the points...I could tell they weren't going to lose the lead. Not from the numbers on the scoreboard, but the imagination and boldness of the playcalling. Favre was spectacular and Mangini gets an A from me for Week 4.
I don't get the whole coaching thing...playcalling is based almost 100% on play success...that 4th and 1 TD? How many would be praising that call if we failed? The playcalling thing is overblown...like most issues with this team so far.
I disagree. Playcalling is not overblown. It is part of gameplanning and is one the most important parts of the offense outside of the QB. Consider this...why is it that the Jets offense can hang 49 on the Cardinals and manage only 10 against the Pats? The defensive talent of the opponent is not tremendously different and the Jets had the same personnel on offense. Sure Jets defensive turnovers played a role, but aside from one, they didn't put the ball in the endzone. It is the ability to gameplan, call the right plays at the right time and make in-game adjustments that leads to the differential and that's squarely on the coaching staff.
"I disagree. Playcalling is not overblown. It is part of gameplanning and is one the most important parts of the offense outside of the QB." I agree, with the reverse order of finish draft system and the salary cap, coaching is the most important thing distinguishing one team from another.
I for one would be praising it and I believe a lot of others too--I hate losing but if I give my best shot, I hate it less. Just like I praised the onside kick last week--not that it was a good idea, but that it showed balls to go for it--and who knows how much of that carried over to this week. I think you perceive greater negativity from the entire fan base based on perhaps 5 individuals who post a lot.
Couldnt agree more...those 4th down decisions not only paid dividends this game..but in future games. Show a bit of a spread offense on 3rd or 4th and short and now you must defend the field..the entire field. I mentioned after the pats game what impresses me most about guys like BB...or Parcells...or any of the real great coaches. They will not run the ball to run the clock out but throw the ball. They will read whats happening on their defense...their defense...and call offensive plays that relate to whats going on..on the other side of the ball. We werent stopping Warner and company worth a damn...so we were not content to run time off the clock...but to score...and most importantly.....keep the ball. Very impressed and hopefully the coaching staff "grew up" finally.
I, for one, love aggressive playcalling. I don't second guess and decide whether it's a good/bad play after the result plays out. I really liked the onsides kick last week against the Chargers. It didn't work out and people said it changed momentum. Maybe it did, maybe it didn't, but I liked the mindset of trying to get your 'better half' (offense) back onto the field immediately and try and take it to your opponent. Face it, last week our D wasn't stopping the Chargers if they got the ball at the 50 or their own 20...
