NFL sacks Jets safety Eric Smith's suspension appeal BY RICH CIMINI DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Wednesday, October 8th 2008, 12:37 AM Eric Smith lost his appeal Tuesday, as the NFL upheld its one-game suspension of the Jets safety. Smith will sit out Sunday's home game against the Bengals (0-5). He was suspended last week after his vicious, helmet-to-helmet hit Sept. 28 on Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin, who was forced to miss a game because of a fractured sinus. Smith also was fined $50,000. The incident came less than two weeks after commissioner Roger Goodell sent a leaguewide memo to players, saying the league was cracking down on illegal hits. Smith, who suffered an apparent concussion on the play, claimed it was unintentional. He appealed with the hope of having the suspension dropped or the fine reduced. The Jets anticipated this outcome. On Monday, they placed Smith on the reserve/suspended list. Abram Elam, David Barrett and Hank Poteat are the candidates to replace Smith, according to Eric Mangini. The early favorite is Elam, who started eight games last season. NOT MILLER TIME: Justin Miller, projected as a starting corner before dislocating a toe in the preseason, still hasn't played in a game. He has been practicing, but he has suffered a "string of setbacks," according to Mangini. Miller has experienced a double "Wally Pipp." He lost his starting job to rookie Dwight Lowery, and he lost his kickoff-returning job last season to Leon Washington, who returned three for touchdowns. Miller played in only two games last year because of a serious knee injury. "I'm still only 24, so I have a lot ahead of me," Miller said. "I'm not going to let it get me down." The timing is lousy. Miller will be an unrestricted free agent after the season. TITANIC SHIFT: The Jets are planning to wear their throwback Titans jerseys for the second straight game. It must be a superstition thing. They're 2-1 in the blue and gold threads, having scored 96 points in the last two games. . . . DE Kenyon Coleman renegotiated his contract, according to a source. There was no new money and no extension (the deal still runs through 2011) but it creates salary-cap room. TRUMP CARD: The club has enlisted Donald Trump to help promote the auction for personal seat licenses in the Coaches Club, luxe seats that are expected to fetch at least $25,000 per PSL. Trump appears in a TV spot that highlights the swanky, 50-yard line seats, where fans can stand on the field, only five yards behind the Jets' bench. The auction begins Oct. 19. Registration already has started on StubHub.com. PACE-SETTER: LB Calvin Pace is going to be a well-liked player in the offseason, when free-agent linebackers use his contract (six years, $42 million) to jack up the pay scale. Former Cards teammate Karlos Dansby, playing on the franchise tag, could hit the open market. "Calvin Pace for President, man," Dansby said. "If he were running against Obama right now, I'd have a real tough decision." __________________
This is very interesting... ...are they looking to make some room to bring someone in, possibly before the Week 6 trade deadline? Hmmm...
Hofefully they are looking to lose Colemen. It becomes more apparent as time goes on that his tackle totals last year was because the run defense stunk and he was making plays 5 yards down the feild. He is invisible this year with Jenkins doing his job this year.
One plays D-end and one is a NT. How is Jenkins doing his job? Coleman is a professional out there and like the post before you clearly states, there is nothing wrong with having depth and experience in case of any injuries.
I'd like to send a message to Goddell. FU!!! That is a horsesh!t fine and suspension. Save the fines and suspensions for the CLEAR cheap shots. When numerous players are involved in a hit, it is incidental and not malicious. This is football, not the ballet!! Save the holier than thou routine for the occasions that deserve it.
Agreed--very interesting.. The trading deadline is October 14th which is next Tuesday. Who could they be thinking about? Or does it have to do with the kicker and chatman situations? Maybe they're preparing some space, just in case. This would be wise. Hmmm.,
Maybe they're looking at bringing in a safety? Anyone know of potential FA's? Ty Law at safety, hell - ty law at dime?
Yeah, it could be a number of things, who really knows. Either way, Titans jerseys again? Come on, we're the Jets, we're green and white. I like the Titans jerseys as a change of pace, but come on. At least wear the kelly green of the early 90's and 80's....
I agree. These guys are ridiculous. They would bitch about the colors on a black and white TV. They are still the JETS.
anyone see the vikings/saints MNF game? There was a hit in there that should definitely cause a suspension. The outcome wasn't as bad as the Boldin hit but the intent of the hit was much worse and on purpose.
I actually saw two from that game, one on Peterson and one on a receiver near the goal line. Plus I saw two from other action on Sunday. I'm gonna need like 4 guys to get suspended on Friday if Smith did.
I didn't mean Jenkins is doing Colemans job, that's my fault. I meant with Jenkins doing his job as the NT, Coleman is invisible because plays aren't going 5+ yards down the field in the running game anymore. The guy is a backup and he has to be replaced for this Defense to take the next step.
It shouldn't matter how badly the player gets injured, or if he gets injured at all. The only thing that should matter is the intent of the hit and how he hit him. Otherwise the league should just suspend everyone who's involved in an injury of another player.
Amen Bro. I'm sick of these jerseys and to be playing them 2 games in a row at home is just plian fu**ing ridiculous. We are the Jets- green.
If they keep winning and putting up points I honestly wouldn't care if they came out of the tunnel in nothing but their jock straps and helmets.
Whoa............! just pictured Mangini leading out the team with his thong and clipboard, oh. man..............................
