How can they rank that when he's barely seen the field? Just curious, who has the honor of being number #1?
Winning record or not it is about fielding the strongest possible team & right now because VG is NOT contributing he weakens the team which is what I am saying. 1st we do not have years to wait to see VG develop since BF has maybe another year or 2 until he gone & whatever you see now with BF will certainly be gone without BF.
I forget who they had at #1 but it was a veteran player. I agree that it's totally ridiculous to categorize a player as the best or worst at anything based on such limited information. ESPN Magazine is utter crap, IMO. I just thought it was interesting that it's not just Jets fans who are starting to slap the ol' bust label on VG. I did feel as I do now, that the Jets were in a really shitty spot with that 6th pick. 4 players who they coveted were already off the board (Long, Long, Ryan and McFadden) and they had to either take a risk on a player with high upside or let that player potentially fall into the hands of their hated rival. In hindsight, I doubt the Pats had any interest in Gholston. It pains me to think how much value we could have gotten by trading down and picking one of the RB's that were still available like Felix Jones or Jonathan Stewart.
Disagree. The team isn't weaker because there are guys ahead of him who start and contribute to a Defense that's among the best at sacking the QB and stuffing the run -- which is what Gholston's job as a LB is. In fact, I don't think there was anyone drafted last April who would be starting ahead of Thomas and Pace. By your logic, any LB we drafted would weaken this team. So the Jets chose the LB with the most upside.
So your solution is write him off as a bust and never play him, even if you can do so and still win games while he learns the ropes? If not, then what is your solution?
I'm with you on this one. I hope he does pan out, but he is generating worry. Heck, I wish somebody offered me $20M in guarantees just to get close to the pile 3 to 5 times a game.
We are currently starting two converted DE's at OLB who each took more then a year to find thier stride in the NFL. Rookie pass rushers tend to take time, let alone one's learning a new poistion. Mario Williams comes to mind. Lamarr Woodly in Pittsburgh is just hitting his stride now and looks good in the steelers 3-4. Gholston is going to take time, but has all the skills to be a very good OLB in our 3-4.

He'd only be in jail if he got caught. He also may have been referring to the slaughter of a tree or a bug.
The ONLY thing that concerns me at this point about Gholston is - and it just may be my perception - his speed. To me, he just doesn't look as quick as billed, and if he's an edge-rusher, then that should be one of his qualities. When I look at the dominant guys who apply pressure, most of them look like they're operating on a much faster level than those around them. I see it from Ware, from the Steelers guys, I saw it from the Chargers last night, from whoever. What I don't know is if I'm off, or if Gholston's speed will come as he situates. All of the other bullshit is just that, bullshit. He'll need time to adjust to this level: to learn how to read plays, and build a larger arsenal of moves. Fortunately, those can be taught and learned.
I agree with your concern. I watched him running down the field on a kickoff and he looked slow. I expect that they are hoping he learns how to play his position this year. Most guys it takes a minimum of a year to play that position. It's just such a unique position that on any play you are sealing the edge against the run, covering a tight end, dropping into zone or rushing the passer. Having Pace and Thomas should help him out a lot since both have made the transition from pass rushing end to outside linebacker. I actually think they need him to lose some of that muscle and become more flexible. He needs to play around 250 and I have to believe he's 265+ right now. I think next season you'll see a player who looks much different and completely understands his position. The average Jets fans just can't deal with this since Revis, Harris and Mangold from day one basically have been great players. It's possible he will be a bust but it's way to early to make that decision.
I have a bad feeling about this guy. I always have. Workout warriors rarely work out in the NFL. I think he's gonna bust.
give him time to develop it's only been 5 games and he barely gets any time. right now he has time to learn because pace and thomas have been awesome. there is no rush making him a star right awa
My biggest worry with Gholston is that his best position may well be 4-3 DE, a position that doesn't exist on our team. Everyone keeps saying he should aim for being the new LT, but he reminds me more of Strahan.
