    Sutton & Ryan square off

Jets defensive coordinator Bob Sutton should have extra incentive to shut down the Raiders in the Black Hole on Sunday.

That?s because speculation this past offseason pointed to Eric Mangini replacing Sutton with Raiders defensive coordinator and close friend Rob Ryan. (Mangini and Ryan were defensive assistants together in New England under Bill Belichick for four years).

According to reports, Ryan expected to be hired by the Jets, after he anticipated being fired by the Raiders, but neither ever happened. Reportedly, then-coach Lane Kiffin wanted to fire Ryan, but was overruled by Raiders owner Al Davis.

Well, as it turns out now, Sutton and the Jets are faring a whole lot better than Ryan and the Raiders. Entering their clash Sunday, the Jets rank 11th in total defense. That includes only allowing 69 rushing yards per game, third-best in the league. In contrast, Oakland has allowed at least 30 points in five of its last nine games, under Ryan?s defense.

If Al likes him then he must be pretty bad

I feel like Ryan would be a good DC if he wasn't in that environment he is in. If he came to NY and coordinated players that were smart, driven, team-oriented players with a great core attitude, he'd have a consistent awesome defense... He has to deal with DeAngelo Hall on a regular basis- how can he be successful?

You give him this team he'll do well.

I think Sutton is better than Ryan. Hair Dryin' Ryan's big rep is based on the '06 season where they had deceptively good stats. Other than that season all Ryan has is long, silky smooth hair that most women would die for. I know this will sound like heresy to coaching staff darksiders, but BS2 actually is better.

Ryan is supposedly a 3-4 expert ala Mangini and Belichick etc. That's what we need here; Sutton still seems to lack knowledge of our scheme to be DC. Improvement after the BYE week each year has been a direct result of Mangini personally tweeking things.... Don't like Sutton but I guess I won't complain while the D is looking good (against the run anyways).

Sutton is fair—he implements a basic 3-4, no surprises. But does anyone else kind of miss Donnie Henderson's defensive moments, when they worked? Aggressive, surprising, a little different. Our defense is stacked talent-wise, and they play the basic 3-4 well, but I'd love to see a coordinator come in here that could impose a little more personality to that side of the ball. Our D still does not inspire fear, despite effectivity this season.

You don't just win a few games and instantly get league and media respect, especially in NYC.

I'm not 100% sure about Ryan, but my gut says he'd do fine here.

Thats where Rob Ryan would come in. He'd do that for the Jets.

Ryan is running a 4-3 in Oakland... he is a 3-4 guy like his brother Rex Ryan.

I figured out why Ryan is highly touted but does so shitty... he is in Oakland.

If Ryan Coordinated the Jets or any other 3-4 team with the attitude and talent and desire to win, he'd be as good as Rex. I think Oakland is the problem, not Rob.

idk I've never been a rob fan. I still think his brother Rex is not only the better of the two, but one of the best in the league. I really dred the fact we missed out on acquiring him this offseason.

They are both Buddy Ryan prodigies. Buddy Ryan is still the best defensive coordinator the Jets ever had and the ONLY reason they won the superbowl and Namath is the first to admit that. His whole guaranty was because he knew what Buddy Ryan had planned on defense. As long as he is still alive I would take either of his sons to run our defense.
