I wanted to bring up another play that may have seemed insignificant to some. But I loved it. It was the handoff to Richardson as the fullback on a long 3rd and one. We never and I mean never give it to the first guy through. He picked up at leeast 2 maybe 3 yards a great play for another first down..You know what might be a cool play to see on a goal line stand ,say on the one yard line. Line up Jenkins in the backfield....Would love to see it , even if it was just once. Anybody else???
Hah, here's a convo I had with a fellow Jet fan earlier today: (CapnKill is me) [11:06] capnkill7724: You know what one of my favorite plays was yesterday? [11:06] capnkill7724: In our last drive, the FB dive for a 1st down [11:07] capnkill7724: that was huge [11:07] capnkill7724: cause I was saying [11:07] capnkill7724: oh fuck, we're going to hand it to T. Jones and he's gonna get stuffed [11:07] capnkill7724: but... not so fast!! Session Close : Mon Nov 03 11:10:02 2008
I actually said "Hey I didn't see that coming" when that happened. That was a great example of playcalling and using the players strengths against the other teams. More of that = more wins.
This is the play we should use at the goalline all the itme if we decide to run. If not then make it PA. I liked the other 3d and 1 play we had where we threw it to Jones.... I think the coaching staff is realizing that we don't run very well for short yardage.
Well, to be fair to Richardson, since the beginning of 2002 he has been used mostly as a lead blocker, with very little go-to responsibilities. In 6 1/2 seasons he has 77 carries and 88 receptions. Even for fullbacks, that is a pretty telling stat.
The guy's stregnth is his blocking skills. He doesn't get the call too much because he makes the guy running behind him look great and he's much better utilized blocking a blitzing LB or a DE than catching the ball. Just take a look at this guy. He's pretty much a pulling guard in an RB's body. Broad shoulders, long arms, powerful legs. It's like having an extra lineman on the field that you don't have to report as eligible.
All that is true , but we have had no success running the ball in short yardage situations. Richardson did well running this pre-season . So it was nice for the Jets to try it once. I would have liked the play even if it did not work. I would make linebackers and linemen think twice about timing there move. Enough time for the needed yardage to be made by second man through. Breaks it up a little
Yes, he is a big reason why Jones is having a good year. Hell, Richardson made stars out of Priest Holmes, Larry Johnson and last year Adrian Peterson. That's why he is here. Let him block.
I'm glad that TJ is starting to get his work, but yeah getting other guys in the backfield going is a good thing. More diversity = Favre is getting used to the playbook.
My wife said "who the hell is that"? I told her, the guy is the fullback, he is practically on the field the entire game.
I would love to see Jenkins run one in, too, but when you consider he is the anchor of our entire defense with no clones available; if he got injured on the play, it would hardly be worth it.
Tony Richardson is a very good FB. i hope the Jets continue to use him effectively as a lead blocker in short yardage situations and also as a runner as we saw against Buffalo and in preseason.
I was hoping someone was gonna mention that play. I had been wondering about a handoff to him for a while, when I saw Jones set back so far I thought there was no way they were gonna give him the ball. You could set Jenkins in the backfield as a great decoy then pass... but I'd love to see Jenkins "the trash compactor" run over some linebackers! haha
I Always thought we should of utilized the hand off to the FB's more on 3rd or 4th and short and it worked there. Great call...
Playoff game with everything on the line, I say chance it. Gotta be easier than taking on all those chop blocks all year
