Cotch had to stop, turn around and jump up in the air... it was certainly not a "in stride" type of throw and catch... I don't go to the games since I"m on the west coast (I plan on going to the seattle game), so I can't really say with 100% certainty if our WRs are beating DBs deep and Favre is not seeing it or not making the throws, or vice versa, so what I say is just from the impressions I get on TV... so that's my disclaimer
thats because they dont exist. he threw a bad deep ball on sunday but it was overthrown not a wounded duck.
Stuckey: He may have some clutch plays now and then, but he really doesn't bring anything that we don't get from Coles/Cotch. At this point its really like we have 3 of the same receiver. Not too hard to game plan against... Smith: Trick plays are cool, but not as necessary as a credible deep threat. We would take a hit on special teams here though.
He's getting way too much air under his deep throws. The throw to Cotchery probably would have been a TD if it would have been out in front of him instead of making Cotchery have to stop and jump up in the air to try to catch it.
Stuckey's done nothing but make big plays, when given the opportunity. I can't recall the last time Stuckey's dropped a pass. He's a tough little receiver. He can take a hit and gets good YAC. It's not his fault if the coaching staff doesn't put him on the field enough.
i dont believe he has dropped a pass yet this year. granted he only has like 15-20 grabs, but he has converted multiple third downs for us, and basically won us the miami game by being in the right spot at the right time twice. Stuckey stays. If anything, Sunday was the day to activate Clowney for brad smith, whose trickery would have been worthless in the horrid conditions. probably would have avoided the wildcat option mess too. But Smith is too valuable on special teams to bench, and so is Wright. That is how clowney can get on the field, become a comparable ST gunner like wright and smith, then he can actually get on the field next year.
Clowney wouldnt be doing anything more then Stuckey. The reason Stuckey doesnt get the ball a lot is because Keller has emerged. Baker has to start at TE because he is the better blocker by far but Keller is a real weapon at WR and creates a lot of mismatches. With Keller's emergence whoever the 3rd WR is wont matter as much because they wont be getting a lot of balls thrown to them anyway. JMO
Time for me to become controversial again. My suggestion would be to sit Coles on plays where the deep ball is called. He simply isn't the same receiver anymore. Slants? no problem. Screens? sure thing. Fly patterns? The man can't get seperation anymore so why not try Clowney AND Stuckey at the same time?? Brad Smith is a ST/trick player guy but we can't make him inactive. If it comes down to numbers, why not make Nugent inactive and activate Clowney. I think what's imperative now is for teams to respect Farve's arm again. Somewhere along the way, we've turned Brett Farve into Chad Pennington and now its beginning to show in how our opponents gameplan for us. Until we create a viable deep threat, they'll continue to crowd the midrange area and try to take away the short passing game. Clowney, at this time, is our only viable option as a deep threat. Nobody else on the roster has the raw speed to do it..
one problem, Clowney is inactive, and needs to be activated so that he can dress for the game, and actually play. The question is who do you activate? obviously you can not de activate LC unless he is hurt, and I dont like deactivating Stuckey, he has shown he deserves to play, and has never failed to make the play when called upon to do so. also nugent is also inactive when Feely is kicking, and vice versa. so that doesnt work either.... it seems illogical to activate 6 recievers for one play to deactivate depth somewhere else on the roster...
Nugent.. Since he's already inactive, who on our bench can we give a day off to?? There has to be somebody that never sees the field that we can send home for a bit.. Bubba Franks maybe???
I still say they should deactivate Clemens and put Clowney in. Smith can be emergency QB if necessary.
Somebody should be inactivated somewhere to put Clowney in. Heck, we only play one FB, 2 RBs, and 2 TEs each game, so there has got to be some extras in some other positions. I think it is time to work Clowney into this offense. There isn't a much better time to do it than this Sunday against the 49ers. Favre's number 3 receiver last year, James Jones, got 700 yards receiving with him. This year, we are lucky to get one catch out of Stuckey and a wildcat play out of Brad Smith per game. I really think a number 3 or 4 CB vs. Clowney would create some pretty good mismatches. You know Favre is going to try to hit a long one at least a couple times a game, so you might as well give him a receiver that might actually be able to be the deep threat that we don't have on this team. Our current receivers can't create separation and Coles doesn't even look like he tries on the deep ones.
OK, I just rewatched that play and you're right Cotch did have to stop to catch the ball. That's where it had to be thrown though because there was a safety closing in over the top. He put it in the only spot he could have for Cotch to make a play on it and he should have caught the damn thing. As for the other deep ball and people saying he threw it too high - if anything he had to throw it higher because it went too far. The guy played great for 3 weeks straight and not so good Sunday. It was a bad game, he'll rebound just fine and these silly comments about him throwing ducks will go away. Watch the highlights on NFL.com and look at some of the lazers he's throwing around. He's not throwing fucking ducks. GTFOH whoever is saying that shit.
No one is saying that he throws ducks in the 0-30 yard range... those are all lasers, and are working great. Its the deep lobs that tend to hang up there in the air... I mean how many deep lob completions where the WR is hit in stride can you think of this year? You can say the PA in week 1 or 2 that hit Cotch for the TD but he had to slow down for that one... The over teh top to Dustin Keller... and... that's seriously all I can think of. I think the one vs the Titans to Coles was a good one as well but Coles got interfered with and could only use one hand... so that's 3 that I can recall... the entire year.
Good call. Ratliff really can't do any worse than Clemens, and Smith can run the option all day behind the OL. But it should never come to that. I'm all for this idea.
There is a difference between a jump ball and a lazer down field when it comes to deep throws. Listening to some post game interviews, it sounds like Favre does purposely throw some jump balls to some of his receivers a couple times a game because in his mind the receivers are talented enough that they should be able to get them and he thinks you need to take a couple shots down field a game to keep the defense honest. Personally, I wish he wouldn't do that because I have less faith in these receivers than he does. If you give Favre somebody like Clowney, I think he will be more calculated with his deep throws and you would see more lazers and less jumps on the deep balls. I just don't see hardly anybody getting open deep down the field in games. I think Clowney adds a new dimension. Last year, Favre had 3 WRs (Jennings, Driver, and Jones) and 1 TE (Donald Lee with 600 yards and 6 TDs) heavily involved with the offense and a good RB in Ryan Grant, not to mention some other help, so I don't buy that we can't utilize more people in this offense even though I know this offense doesn't have quite the same talent as Green Bay's.
