I completely agree with this comment. This was the Jet's only option at the time. Hindsight is crystal clear as to who we should've taken, unfortunately the shitty year Bryan Thomas had last year completely forced Tannenbaum's hand over who he should take. I believe that if BT had a decent year and the signing of Pace that we could've filled a more pressing need like DB. Again, I can't criticize management for drafting Vernon, but man, it was super painful to watch his slow ass trying to track down Cutler last week. Holy shit, I thought the guy was supposed to be explosive. All that 'learning a new position' crap meant nothing when he had a QB with average speed dead to rights in the open field and the guy couldn't close the deal...
I think the Pats went through the motions in order to trick us into taking the "Ghost" so Mayo would still be on the board for them. Classic deception and misdirection.
It wasn't their ONLY option at the time. The Jets could have traded up, they could have traded down. Let's not make excuses. On the other hand, who's to say that Gholston might turn out to be a good player someday? There's way too much negativity on ths board... Keep the faith, baby!
Yeah..it's too early to give up. Our other Ohio linebacker, Schlegel, had 1 tackle in 4 games his first season. Gholston has 4 tackles in 12 games. That's a whopping 1/3 tackle better per 4 games played!!!!!! Let's just ship his ass to the Bengals now and get it over with.
I didn't want him either, and still don't. He's a bust, through and through. I freaking HATE high draft picks. They always screw us. We'll have to carry Gholstons dead-weight around for at least 3 years, too. What a waste of a pick and money.
Gholston was the top OLB prospect in the draft. The Pats were in desperate need to replenish their LB corps. My guess is their interest was genuine. I'd say it was as simple as that. Read the scouting reports on Gholston before the draft. Everybody said the guy was going to be an impact player early in his career, especially in a 3-4 scheme. His athleticism was off-the-charts. So I think it's a big surprise to almost everyone that he's done virtually nothing as a pro so far.
To be fair, what everybody said was that Gholston had the biggest spread between immediate impact and bustness. Every scouting report that I saw talked about his amazing physical talents and his very laid-back and lowkey demeanor. The basic gist of things was that he had the body to be a superstar but nobody knew if he had the personality to pull it off. All of the above were pretty much true of D'Brick also, so I think it's really early to be calling Gholston a bust. I do think the Jets need to figure out what has gone wrong and get on that though. Obviously what they have done organizationally to promote his growth has been a failed effort so far.
We've played him enough to get the hang of it but not enough to perfect himself. He needs a little more time and we can't give him that right now, not while we're in the hunt for the playoffs. I say we give him the offseason and the entire camp and preseason next summer to come around. If he ain't with it by Week Two or Three in the regular season next year, he's officially a bust in my book.
Waht I don'like (and I have never liked) is that we don't have any qualified opinion on him. I like this CS but I hate their secrecy, and I can't believe there isn't any journalist capable or intelligent enough to tak to other players and see what they have to say about Ghlolston. At this point now, we're all speculating. Hell, even the story that started this thread is pure speculation.
You think about the great pass rushers in our generation, Strahan didnt do shit his first season with the giants, and he had only what 4 sacks his 2nd season? lets not give up on Gholston off the bat guys, matter fact according to NFL.com he didn't even register a TACKLE
Good Point! Gaines Adams in Tampa did not record his first sack until week 13 and he STARTED all year at his natural position. Then when he did record a sack they came in droves. Unfortunate he played poorly in Bucs loss to Giants last year POs. A Wise Man Waits for Buddha, not the other way around (or something like that All of sudden I'm hungry?).
I was all for Gholston because he had the size and was known for his first jump off the line. I don't know what happened. I truly wonder if it was the roids or something. I know he does not look like he is going to work out but we can not write him off in his first season. seems like he was a late bloomer to football in general so maybe he will re emerge himself in a year or so. We have to atleast wait until next year before calling him a bust. If I was the coaching staff I would be all over this guy. I would be reeminh him out and making him earn that 20 mil every day at practice. We will see how he works out. I still say give him time before giving up.
NFL people said the same thing about Blair Thomas. I did hear Jimmy Johnson admit that the Cowboys would have taken him if he was available at the spot they picked at.
Mayo was a Linebacker in college. If you wanted Mayo, you only need to put 10 lbs on Vilma. Gholston is a slow learner, but he's going from DE to LB.Not always an easy transition.
Learning/schmearning--he has showed nothing. As others have pointed out, the guy had Cutler right in front of him and he moved toward Cutler as if Cutler was an alligator. He JOGS after the ballcarrier as if he has no cares in the world--Put a hungry guy like Murrell in there and you'll at least see effort. Same problem as Dslob--huge, huge signing bonus and he's set for life--no reason to sweat working hard in the NFL.
wow ok Mangini isnt going to run him out of town after 12 games come on...the guy is learning geez...did any of you follow OSU?...the dude is a monster and he will be great for us just have patience
that's an interesting comparison at this stage in both their careers. The CS's know that they can both be great players, but they are too unassuming and nice on the field. I don't see Gholston or Carpenter thirsting for blood on the field and are just going through the motions. They need to be more assertive and their careers can take off. Its all mental with both of them. The pysical talent is there.
