If anybody see's Kerry Rhodes please let Eric Mangini and the Jets coaching staff know ASAP. There probably looking for him. Seriously though this guy has been a ghost all season since he has gotten his money. He's not having the same impact that he use to have on this defense. Where the hell is Kerry Rhodes?
They were worse last year and he was making plays. He should Blitz a lot more and thats the coaches fault but I dont see him making any plays in the secondary anymore. I see him tackling guys after a gain of 15 or so.
Yah im starting to agree now.. Initially I told people they werer overreacting.. teams were going away from him and that's why.. Ed reed is much more known then kerry and still makes plays still gets pics, still has deflections.. I DO NOT doubt kerry is good, but hes going to have to start showing it ..
Neither him nor Revis are making big plays in the secondary because opposing QBs don't throw in their direction. Instead, they're abusing the rest of our DBs.. which clearly isn't difficult. When he makes tackles that deep he's usually picking up the slack of Coleman or Elam's blown coverage.
The problem I have with that is they were worse last year and he was making plays. Last year Revis was a rookie. They didnt have Law and they had Barret, Poteat, Dyson, and Coleman covering people. And Kerry Rhodes was still making plays.
Watching Ed Reed last night makes me wonder when will Kerry become that good. Baltimore fans do not have the problem we are having right now. Maybe we should move Kerry to SS instead of FS?
Actually, has anybody seen C. Pace making the impact plays he was earlier in the season? A general malaise has taken over this 'D', maybe it's the ganja...
The pass rush early in the season was too successful, so the Jets felt they had to try something different. Now that they are doing something that isn't working, they have found something to continuously work on and continue to fail at.
Problem is, our CS seems to think that if we drop the entire team and rush 1, it'll help solve our pass defense problems. What amazes me is how they rush 3...and NO ONE IS OPEN. Leading to either a tight throw, throw-away, or a sack. Yet, we rush 3 and the opposition always has 2 guys WIDE OPEN who are always picking up huge chunks of YAC. It's really frustrating to watch and our CS isn't making any defensive adjustments. How come we don't have any stunts? Where did that D where only 1 lineman had his hand on the dirt and the rest just stood around at the LOS, hiding where the blitzes would come from? Why aren't we sending delayed blitzes? Where did our corner blitzes go? This D yesterday was atrocious at all positions. The offense didn't do this defense any favors whenever they got their chance.
There was one play yesterday where they actually ran the right defense... nickel package, all 3 corners playing man coverage, while the linebackers ALL blitzed... Guess what? The linebackers didn't make it to the QB, but Hill DID have to get rid of it quickly simply because of the threat of the rush... on the replay they highlighted the fact that ALL THREE RECEIVERS were shut down, and Revis ended up making the deflection with ease. That worked so well... that the Jets didn't try that again for the rest of the game. Brilliant.
From the past few games, I am getting the impression that, Jets LBs lack the field awareness in general. This is critical - I strongly doubt whether Jets LBs are that slow to make enough plays in a given game - in a drive, sure they could be beat, but it's not likely for any LB corps to get beat up the way Jets LBs got beat up all game long. They look slow - and this is precisely because they lack that field awareness. Like some other poster pointed out, usually Jets LBs play their backs to the ball in a given passing down. This is a telltale sign of the lack of field awareness. And this makes the LBs slower than they are, since they must react to the play instead of anticipating what is supposed to happen. I'd like to think that of course, Sutton is the primary goat here - he just sucks big fat goatballs, but LB coach should share some of the blames too. The point of 3-4 is to use LBs to get in the passing lanes, so that the intermediate passing can be neutralized - if the LBs are not doing that, either the players are donkeys, or the coaching staff is to blame. Now, what does that have to do with safety play? A lot. If there is one critical element in any blitz play, that's the unexpected-ness. The QB shouldn't be anticipating the blitz. The OL shouldn't be anticipating the blitz. If that happens, you can call all sorts of exotic blitzs to your heart's content. Instead... Jets front 7 doesn't generate any pressure. This in turn means if a safety is lurking inside the tackle box, he's more than likely to come in for blitz. Also, if the front 7 cannot generate enough pressure, it makes the secondary look like a bunch of donkeys. Which is precisely what happened to us the past two weeks.
I do remember that play. I commented on it in the Game thread. It's amazing how much we tend to move away from things that work on D.
Has anyone seen ANY player on our team make ANY kind of significant impact in the last 2 games? Ok, besides T. Jones and L. washington. Both those guys are still playing their asses off, but no one else seems to be showing up .. at all.
No one will become as consistently great as Ed Reed has been, but you dont have to be as good as Ed Reed to be a good football player. Comparing him to reed is unrealistic. You can be a great artist but still not be Michaelangelo.
