I'm a relatively new Jets fan. I've only really started following the Jets (and football) in 04, and so I'm unfamiliar with the long, torrid, love-hate relationship that some peple have with this franchise. Sometimes I'll read something where Jets fans will recall the losses and attribute it to the SOJ, but being so new to this sport, I really can't relate. 04, 05, 06, 07 were seasons that played out as expected - mediocre talent where the team could have gone either way, and the expectations were always low. But those years are nothing like 08. 08, for the first since I've been a fan, is when I actally had expectations for a playoff berth and beyond. I'm taking this collapse (if it really plays out that way) much worse to the point where thinking about it hurts. Can you guys recall a time where we were contenders as a team and had a collapse this bad? How do you cope with it guys. Please help.

maybe you should ask a less depressed fanbase for advice... no offense to anyone

btw, u just learn to deal with it. get drunk. pretend u don't actually care about football. look to next year and hope things get better. etc.

I'm young, so I don't get the whole "nothing good happens to us, we will always suck" mentality. It's not conducive to healthy living or being a good franchise in all aspects.

I can only think of the Mets collapse, maybe there was one like this a long time ago. The Jets only had a 2 game lead. Thats had to happen before.

I'm 40 so I guess I qualify as "old". I think what happens is you start to get a little numb to it because you can see it coming. I never bought into the hype the Jets were getting when they were 8-3. There was obviously plenty of football left to be played and plenty of time for the SOJ's to rear their ugly head which they did.

The shitty thing about going through so much failure and choking over the years is that it makes it harder to enjoy winning because you know what's lurking around the corner.

There have been much worse collapses than this. Didn't we once start 9-0 and end up 9-7 and miss the playoffs?

    we had one game lead
and are still in first place
    you want collapses ok
    2000, groh coach
carroll playing for first place- spike game lose out
85 10-1 and we lose out
difference is 2000 we played over head and groh had worn team out
carroll team was ok at best
85 was bad but was driven by injury
this year we arguable getting healthier had found our identity and had seemed to change the culture
so let me tell you this one hurts as much as any
we might have new coach, new qb next year have not changed culture and will be back to square one
    that is what hurts -
we establish we are physical offense that runs ball well and then dont run the ball

how do you deal with this keep telling yourself all this hardship will make the time we finally win a super bowl so much better
believe we will some day and wear your misery like a badge of honnor

    Umm, like, no and stuff.

What is the point of making up stuff, Don?

Were you thinking of 1986 by chance? If so, you are off a bit. That year the Jets started 10-1, finished 10-6, and then went 1-1 in the playoffs.

Does 99 count? We started the year as AFC favorites after losing the AFC Championship game in Denver.... and Vinny tears his ACL in the first game, and we proceed to play Tom Tupa and Rick Mirer as QB's....

That was Parcell's last year, and we ended up 8-8 after Ray Lucas replaced Mirer.

What really sucks about this year is that the Jets really went for broke signing a bunch of high price Free Agents and then trading for Favre. They set things up so that it was "playoffs or bust" this year. If they miss the playoffs they will not only look like assholes, they will have set the team back for years. Why? Because we will not have the cap room to plug holes like we did last year, we will have a number of aging vets on a team headed nowhere, we will STILL have no clue who our QB is, we have coughed up another first day draft pick (Favre), we have a 2008 #1 pick that looks like a COMPLETE BUST! And I didn't even mention coaching!!

'86 was the worst that I can remember. At 10-1 the Jets looked like the real deal. Lost their last 5 and then got bounced by Cleveland in the playoffs on Gastineau's braindead roughing the passer penalty.

No. in 2000 we started 4-0 and finished 9-7 and missed the playoffs. In 1986 we started 10-1 only to finish 10-6 but we made it to the second round of the playoffs. I know I'm not the first person to point out your mistake here. Maybe you should do just a little bit of research first

Welcome to our world, young man.
As a Jets fan since 1980, and season ticket holder just as long, i've been disappointed many times by this franchise.
This season is not much different then a lot of others, in that you are "fooled" into thinking that the JETS are a good, playoff caliber team, only to realize they are not.
Our secondary cannot cover anybody, and play 15 yds off the recievers. Our linebackers cannot account for a TE, or RB out of the backfield.
Our offensive line is waaaaay overrated. Our defense cannot get pressure on the QB. Our QB cannot win games for us, like he has done in years past for another team in green.
We are consistent though. The JETS cosistently let thier fans down.

Welcome aboard, my friend, but a word of advice. Buckle your seat belt, your in for a bumpy ride.:breakdance:

Yeah, that is what I was thinking of. And if you could see you would have noticed it was a question not a statement of fact. Keep your rhetorical bullshit to yourself.

I prefer to call myself experienced.... Anyway, we are still leading the division. But what is most distressing is that the 49ers out coached us yesterday and can we get a receiver that can actually get some separation from the defense....

What really sucks is that we are in first place in our division have two home games left against teams in our division that we beat in their stadium and everyone is freaking out.

We have been expossed as a less than dominating team. In a league of adjustments it just means we now have to correct some things and win the division games. If we finish 8 and 8 or 9 and 7 or 10 and 6 with a loss to the Dolphins or Bills that puts us out of the playoffs than we can all freak out.

It looks like we have to now win the division to make the playoffs. That's a good thing because Manginious can put away the pocket protector that figures out the 45 different ways to back into the playoffs and act with a sense of urgency to figure out how to beat a bad Buffalo and Seattle team and an improved but still mediocre Dolphin team.

How do I deal with it? It's not the SOJ, this is the way the NFL plays out every single year. Yea I'm disappointed that we don't have a kick ass dominating team that we can count on but so what when have we. You root for the team you don't give up hope and you hang in there just like the team has to. If we lose we lose if we win we move on to next week. Vent and hate and move on that's how you deal with it.

Guys, we are not going to the playoffs; it is that simple. This team has nothing right now. They may win against Buffalo this weekend, but watch them struggle to do so and they may even lose. Go to Seattle; this team can't play when they cross or get near the Great Divide so they will lose in Seattle. Miami is not the Miami we played in the opener; you can argue easy schedule all you want; they are getting it done and if - and I seriously stress IF we win the next 2; Miami could very well deal the classic disappointment that I have seen so many times.

Being a Jets fan has to be one of the hardest things in the world; maybe being a Lions fan is even harder.
