"The Jets went 1-4 in the last 5 games because of ________. People have inserted Mangini and Favre mostly. Good grief. Here is the real reason: There are many. 1. Eric Mangini did a terrible job coaching, might have lost the team. 2. Favre did a bad job at QB the final 5 games, his INT's were too much. 3. The offensive line did not protect for Favre very well during the stretch. 4. The offensive play calling was absolutely TERRIBLE. 5. The Jets did not use Thomas Jones or Leon Washington enough. Pathetic. 6. The defense fell apart the final 5 games. They lacked heart. 7. The defense did not blitz enough. 8. The defense was exposed by Denver as to having a weak secondary and no pass rush. 9. The Special teams looked weak the final 3 weeks of the season. 10. Ty Law was terrible and did absolutely nothing to help the Jets. 11. The team lost that fire or whatever they had the last 5 weeks. They looked like a lost team who knew failure was coming and they just waited for it. 12. Leon Washington was TERRIBLE returning punts. He was too afraid to even catch one after the fumble in Oakland. He should have been replaced but never was. 13. Dustin Keller dropped too many passes, despite being a rookie and a 1st round TE pick by the Jets, which never turns out well. -Mangini did deserve to be fired, but it was not all on him. -Favre did throw 22 touchdowns, but some were on plays that should not even be called. How many 3rd and 1's or 3rd and 2's were we in Shotgun? With the #1 RB in the AFC? A solid O-line too. Pathetic. Who Can't You Blame: 1. Thomas Jones 2. Darrelle Revis 3. Nick Mangold
I agree with everything except two points: 1) The Washington thing. We got really unlucky with a few bounces, but for the most part, Leon did what PRs are coached to do. 2) Putting Mangold in the list of players who had no part in this disaster. His poor reads, and spotty-passblocking on the OL was a big reason our pass protection sucked so much....
There WAS an inordinate amount of let-goes by Washington in the final games, not denying that. Who knows though? Maybe he was told to let them go into the end zone? We wound up with piss-poor field position on some of them too, but I still would not have replaced Leon at that position. He's just too much of a game changer. If you're saying he lacked confidence because of that one fumble, it certainly never showed in any of his other plays. He just about single-handedly kept some drives alive when all else was falling apart.
It was Faneca who caused the breakdowns on pass blocking. He has always been a mediocre to poor pass blocker and he's lost a step over the last couple of seasons. Early on D'Brick and Mangold we covering for him but as the season wore down they wore down too and couldn't keep up that pace. Honestly that's what happened. My brother-in-law, the Steelers fan, told me in training camp that getting Faneca was going to help the Jet's run game immensely but was also going to put tremendous pressure on the young guys around him to keep people off the QB. He was 100% right on that one.
You can quibble about this or that, but I think the original post was the best summary of what went wrong that I've seen on this board. This was a massive failure on many fronts. That's why the head coach has to go, but also why there's plenty of blame to go around.
Good post, but do yourself a favor and look up Farve's QB rating in December over the last 5 years, compare it to the rest of those seasons. See the decline and how terrible it's been and then ask yourself if this happened the last few years in Green bay how much of it had to do with your list? I agree there are plenty to blame, but Favre was TERRIBLE!!!
And going after Favre was Chad's fault because he carelessly dove head-first against the Bills and tore his own shoulder cuff without being touched by a defender.
Twice repaired shoulder noodle arm and all he CRUSHED Favre's numbers this year with way less offensive talent on the field!!!
I'll chip in with Chad is 3 and 0 over Farve too. And all three occassions he washed his face. The last game in Green bay he just took Farve behind the woodshed.
If Favre was part of bad play calling, does that excuse him when throws a STUPID int? STUPID is the one where he was trying to catch the D sleeping, or the int on the screen...how do u throw a pick on a screen???
Favre beat Chad week 1 this season. Not that that changes anything. At this point in time, Favre is a miserable QB and you couldn't get rid of him fast enough for me. I'd rather see Ratliffe, Clemens, Ainge, Cassell, anyone but Favre.
Wow for the first time I agree with you. Man do people overrate Mangold. Im gonna take a wild guess..... coaching?
