exactly. players who rush the QB are a major asset if they can leap; a dead ball is an incomplete pass -- any criticism about that? cheers
i didnt know much about this guy until i watched that highlight reel.......he is a monster....he would be a great pickup with our 29 pick or our 35 pick....im on board
If we want Lawson we have to have a pick that takes place after the Browns take Kamerion Wimbley and before Dallas gets the chance to take Manny.
Well I have to disagree 100% with you. I work for Comcast Sports as a camera man and really feel that you a overlooking this picture. You have to figure the average person is around 6 feet tall. The picture taker is standing not as close to the basket as the picture looks maybe somewhere around the foul line. The center of the picture is right around Manny's waist and that right there is about 6 feet. So the picture is taken just the same as any other picture that is taken with someone leaping at a basketball net except they are actually sitting down and have a worse angle at the player jumping. Above all that his ELBOW is above the rim clearly and that just shows a freakish ability to jump. Above all else I really feel jumping is a bigger aspect of being a football player that you may think ESPECIALLY at the Defensive Line, Field Goal Attempts and Punts. Being able to have a DE that can jump above the linemen and get into the passing lane of the Quarterback, is not only special but will make things a lot tougher on the QB. I would love to have a guy who can just jump up and bat down balls just look at how the Redskins defensive line produced on this and they had a strong defense this year. Just my 2 cents. Youth
Vertical leap indicates "explosive ability", not just the ability to jump. It is a fair indicator of abnormally more 'fast twitch' fibres in an athlete.....which, combined with strength, gives an athlete an advantage over others in explosive movements. Having explosive ability is not something you can teach, you either have it or you don't, and in a sport like Grid Iron it is a fantastic quality to have if you have more of it than your opponents.
Why are people trying to compare Lawson to Mario....Mario is at the top of the draft for a reason, we're not talking about drafting Lawson at 4... ....anyway, I'd love Lawson at 29. THe highlight video sold me. If he's not there, I could go for Bobby Carpenter as well.
Good point, surprised nobody mentioned it yet, even I forgot. But not entirely true, you can indeed improve the # of fast twitch muscle fibers, mainly through plyometrics and/or lower body training
That hasn't been proven definitively either way....some scientists say you can, others say you can't. I'd prefer to stick with the traditional view that is that you can't.
By the way, even the scientists that say that you can reckon that the amount of increase in fast twitch fibres that they claim to be able to produce is really only very small relatively. Certainly not enough for a fat unathletic slob to get a 40 inch vertical leap!
for those of you who dont think verticle is important for a DE/LB, you should really think again. having a guy who can get that high is a nightmare for a QB, just knowing that he can bat down any somewhat low pass. and your right, he's not wearing pads, its just his jersey floating up as his body comes down
