All i want to know is...is Peppers capable of playing the 3-4....and is he worth going after? I know our cap situation is in the toilet....but let's pretend we could free up the necessary room. discuss
Peppers when motivated is probable the most gifted pass rusher in the league.. we just dont have too much money tied into the olb spot
He could play DE based on his size. Shaun Ellis - 6'5"/285lb Julius Peppers - 6'7"/283lb I don't understand why he wants to play in a 3-4. As a 3-4 DE, his sack numbers would drop significantly.
yeah but if he was part of a team with good LB'ers. the havoc theyd wreak is unimaginable. youd literally either have to worry about doubling peppers and letting a LB'er go clean or you have to worry about a good LB'er blitzing and one of the best DL in the league in single man on man blocking. also a psychotic 3rd down package would be to put peppers at OLB right over a TE. your almost guaranteed a rushed throw or a sack. i agree, hes prototype 4-3 DE. but someone as athletic and proven as him. the question would be, what kind of coaching staff would he go too. to reach your full potential you require a good coach, its not like hes suddenly gonna get faster or stronger after being in the league and already proving hes one of the best.
If it boils down to him wanting a good coach, what's stopping him from coming to us? Ryan is a great defensive coach; he has experience working with elite players. Cut Bryan Thomas, trade Coles to Jacksonville for their 3rd, sign Julius Peppers FOR LIFE.
Heck with a quick cut of BT and Kenyon Coleman, with Favre retiring that should open up the room for either 1 big FA, or a few lower level guys. Big Names we could chase: Peppers Nnamdi Asoumougha Suggs Mid level guys we could chase: Bart Scott Jim Leonhard Chris Mccalister a million other guys. While i would love a big name guy. I think our team would be better served by bringing in 2 or 3 mid level guys like Scott and Leonhard. than one big guy like Peppers. Nnamdi though would make our secondary scary, can you imagine the blitzes our D could afford to do with Nnamdi and Revis? good god man. blitz 6 every play it would be silly good.
Peppers, Pace, Jenkins, Harris, Suggs, Scott, Ellis, Revis, Rhodes, Elam, Law ^ That's a pretty nice lineup on Defense. Throw in some coaching from Rex, and I think we have ourselves one of the top 5 Defenses in the league.
we have zero space RIGHT NOW. I garuntee their will be some people being removed from the team once Ryan sits down with tannenbaum and they decide which personnel belong on this team. Which guys Ryan doesn't want around because they don't fit his scheme or because they are horrible (Bryan Thomas?). Plus Favre is even more likely to retire, because it seems he is going to need to learn yet another system this late in his career. You guys are freaking out because Tanny told Brett to take a month before worrying about it. well you wanna know why? FA doesnt start until March. So if Favre takes a month before he starts to think about his decision (January), that gives him another month to decide (February). We do not need to be in compliance with the cap until March 31, i believe. So we can sign some guys while we make some moves. besides. How about this for sneaky? With no apparent CBA coming next year, we can pour all of their money into the 2010 season. Think about it. Sign elite guys like nnamdi or Peppers to deals where they earn only 2-4 million next year, but spike to 7-10 million the following year. If there is no CBA, then there is nothing to prevent us going over a non-existing cap. We get under this years cap by giving them a low salary this year, and next year giving them a major spike in salary/bonus whatever. If the players go for it, and they really want to come here, say a few ex-ravens to play for their old defensive coach, like a Bart Scott or a Jim Leonhard, or a Terrel Suggs. it would greatly benefit us, don't you think?
Parcells will gobble up Peppers...aren't they about a billion under the cap? Maybe KC, they have even more.
why would we want Peppers to come here playing DE all his life to bring him here to be a stand up LB makes no sense... if Peppers came here he would be a big impact player and sacks would go threw the roof for the jets... a healthy jenkins Ellis and peppers... who do you double team and who to you let lose to go and feast on the QB DC would have fits
Mike T is a cap specialist. That is his claim to fame. Now it is his job to sit down with the new HC and map out which players stay and which players go. Then we can have a clear path toward free agency and then the draft. Signing a guy like Peppers and lining him up alongside Jenkins sure looks good to me.
personally i would prefer Nnamdi, if we go after a big name guy. Can you imagine an aggressive blitzing defense with our top two cover guys being Revis and Nnamdi? add that to stout run d we had through the first 12 weeks of this season, and my god we could eat people alive! that would be the greatest thing since 98. I would love to watch that defense play!
We would still need a MLB who can cover a TE. I know, I'm becoming picky but a guy can dream. Nnamdi would a nice addition. The question is where do you draw the line on acquiring topline talent when you are close to cap already? All those pieces would be nice but this isn't baseball and we are not the Yankees. Mike T and from what all arrows are pointing to, Rex Ryan, are going to have to evaluate the talent on the roster and make decisions accordingly.
