He is too old to take a full NFL season. Now with his muscle tear and no surgical repair it just adds to his weakness. He needs to go. I gets even dumber when it seems like he is going to retire anyhow. What will the point in having Shotty be then? ugh!
I am sure he was there to witness how it was handled and probably took mental notes knowing he was going to become a HC someday- I am referring to the plausible point that character issues may not bother him like it may other coaches. Whoa Tiger! I understand- never sd anything remotely close to abandoning TJ or Washington. Most of TJs 290 (80%) attempts this year were in the first 11 weeks. If they continued to run him at 18-22 per game after Denver, he would've been in the 320-340 range. TJ was never the feature in Chicago, Tampa or Arizona. Based on this year, he could probably hold up for another 300+ ATT season or two- just not sure. NYJ compared to other teams that committed to run (there by reducing QB errors): Stewart & Williams, Carolina = 487 Attempts; look what happened when they had to pass to catch up in POs Ward & Jacobs & Bradshaw, NYG = 468 Attempts look what happened when they had to pass to catch up in POs McLain, McGahee, Rice, BALT = 529 Attempts look what happened when they had to pass to catch up in POs Jones & Washington, NYJ = 390 Attempts look what happened when they (had to?) pass to catch up in late season. Let me put it in these terms, the difference between the jets and the ravens is 139 rushing attempts- translation: 139 less Favre passing attempts = approximately, down & dirty, 6-7 fewer INTs probably 2-3 fewer TDs. Probably 0-2 more wins. Pure speculative analysis but it sounds about right. Running back by committee is the hot thing because it is effective. Again, Larry Johnson at 6 M per year is a good deal - the flip side is the unknown; but he is coming off of a better year after an injury plagued season. Some NFL Franchise is going to get him, why not the JETS?
I disagree with their interpretation of the Keep-Schottenheimer Move. I think the reason Woody and Tannenbaum want to hold on to Schottenheimer is because if no decent quarterback is available to us in the first or second round, we will not sign a free agent QB (due to our limited cap space) and instead enter the 2009 season with Clemens, Ratliff and Ainge. The best chance any of these young guys have for success is to execute an offense they've spent the last two, three or four years learning and practicing. Remember, Tannenbaum picked all three of these guys. He doesn't want to have five quarterback fuck-ups (I'm including cutting the league's second place MVP as a fuck-up) on his resume. He wants one of these guys to take the driver's seat and stuffing a new playbook down their throats is not a good way to meet that goal. You can build a great defense and buy a nifty offensive line and be a cap guru and a draft expert, but if you can't find a man to quarterback your team, you are not a top-tier general manager. If this is indeed their plan I think it's a good one, even though I don't think Brian Schottenheimer is a good offensive coordinator. Unlike many other teams that fire their head coach, we are not in a rebuilding phase on either side of the ball. Outside of a handful of players, our starters are set. Rex Ryan may not share my opinion, but I strongly doubt that Ferguson, Faneca, Mangold, Moore, Cotchery, Jones, Keller, Washington, Revis, Rhodes, Pace, Harris, Jenkins or Ellis are in danger of losing their roles on this team. So the question then becomes, are we going to be more successful in 2009 if half of those players have to learn a new scheme, or if all of them do?
Very plausible all-contingency plan. If the FO opts for the youth at QB position (and even if Favre comes back) all the more reason to commit to the run and keep the QB to throw to move the chains. Draft a top 5 RB or trade for one (see #36) All in All, I think that BS can see that the year may be too full of landmines for him and he may opt out- even if it means Detroit (or "Hey dad get me a job"). He is in a far better position if Favre does not come back because: (a) if he is wildly successful, then he can say "look it was Favre changing runs to passes at the LOS" or "it was Mangini holding me back". His stock would be sky high; (b) if he sucks (again) he says: "look, within 2 years, I ve lost both a HOF QB and another QB whom was the most accurate passer in the NFL among those with 3000+ ATTS. You act like Mangini was the top dog of this franchise, pulling on all the strings, and using his index pointer to direct traffic. You are trying really hard at making Tanny and Woody look like the victims, all while trying to throw Mangini under the bus. Mangini wasn't the puppeteer, he was the puppet.
All of this is speculation. It could be bullshit, like most things we've heard have been this offseason. I don't know how many posts I've read bashing the Jets regime over crap that never materialized or was proven to be true.
