NY Post: The Jets also signed a dozen players to reserve/future contracts: DL Kareem Brown, RB Jehuu Caulcrick, DE Kenwin Cummings, OL Stanley Daniels, WR Marcus Henry, RB Noah Herron, RB Marcus Mason, DE Ropati Pitoitua, WR Paul Raymond, LB Brandon Renkart, DT Brian Schafering and WR Huey Whittaker.
Looking at this list, we can speculate about a number of positions: 1) With three developmental RB, Jets probably won't draft a RB this year, not even a late rounder. TJ and Leon with some scrub behind them for #3 RB will be enough. So don't look for the Jets to take Knowshon Moreno or Beanie Wells at #17. 2) Same can be said for WR. We've got 3 developmental guys including speedster Paul Raymond and big possession receiver Marcus Henry. It generally takes draft picks at least a year or two to learn how to be a pro receiver. I doubt many WR in the draft this year (outside of the very top picks) would do better than players who've already been in our system for a year. Besides with Coles, Cotchery, Clowney, Stuckey & Keller, the Jets are set at WR. Who knows if Wallace Wright will even be resigned. 3) Defensive front 7 has 4 guys - two LB and two DE. That's a fair bit considering we also have scubs like Trusnik and Murrell on the roster as well. And Gholston to do something with.
4) Only 1 OL in development. That surprised me. Is the team that satisfied with our current backups ? Or are we planning to add another OL in the draft ? 5) No TE - which is odd since I assume Chris Baker and Bubba Franks are going to get cut. Shouldn't we have at least one guy learning the position ? Or maybe both those guys aren't getting cut. 6) No CB or S. Given how poorly our pass defense did, how can we not have at least one or two guys getting ready. Or does that mean the team will target DB in the draft ?
I doubt this means much. These aren't guys who are salary cap hits, and I doubt any of them will see meaningful playing time with the Jets. I never thought Beanie, Knowshown, or LeSean were serious options at #17, but this is a deep draft for RBs, and if a good one could be had in the middle rounds, I doubt they'd hesitiate.
Defense will be his first pick and it will probably be a linebacker. I suspect that his draft will be defense heavy. Schemes are one thing, but you need the personnel to execute them correctly
I doubt any of those guys will be anything other special teamers and practice squad guys. These signings don't mean anything.
Bingo. These singings do not affect the draft at all. Not drafing talent because of any of these players would be silly.
Isn't Chatman still on the roster too? If they keep the 17th pick, hope for Malcom Jenkins, if not, trade down and get 2nd rounders.
It means absolutely nothing about the draft. These signings are all going to be fighting for roster spots in camp. None of them can be counted on to fill holes.
