I wouldnt mind us taking Vernon Davis in the first round if Mario Williams is gone....Im not completely sold on taking Leinart, YOung, or D'Brick with our 4. I think we need playmakers and personally i think Brodie Croyle is going to be a good QB in the NFL if we can manage to get him with a 2nd round pick. THen we can grab some Off weapons with the 4 and 29.
i wouldnt mind taking davis at all, id just like to see them swap with the 9ers if thats what tthey want to do. davis, like vince young, just puts some excitement to a boring ass offense
I don't see how we could take Leinart if is old OC passes on him.... Chow doesn't want him but, Shottenheimer Jr is going to work with him? That said I don't see Leinart getting past Tenn.
Mario is #1 on at least 6 teams big boards so even if NO does not take him I suspect he will be gone by 4 anyway. Possibly even at #1. I am not sure the Mario talk by Texas is all smokescreen. I do not think we are sold on the top 3 QBs. I do think we are taking a QB and it will be Croyle or Clemems. I think we go offense first pick. We have a good defense, but more importantly an improved OFFENSE will help our defense more than another player. We need to keep the defense on the sideline more this year. So it comes down to Davis or D'Brickshaw. As safe as tackles are and as good as Ferguson is, I think there are still questions especially on run blocking. We can get good offensive line help at 29 or 35, with players such as McNeil or Mangold. So I do not think we choose Brick. The only thing most Jets fans have against Davis is that he is a TE and they have nightmares of the previous ones we have taken. Davis is different. He is a multi-faceted guy, a Mangini type if you will. He will play split end, slot receiver and WR as much as TE. We could also overload when side with Baker and Davis and create huge mismatches for the LB and safeties. He is a tremendous physical specimen, but he is a great player too with good hands. He LIKES blocking and will improve. Also, remember the Schottenheimer connection. Gates is the person who changed the Charger offense and made them a force. Not LT. Not Brees. The SD offense changed when Gates came around. They are a top offense without a true elite receiver. ( I live in San Diego and watch all their games so I have good perspective on them) Schottenheimer will desparately want Davis to be his Gates. When you look at everything, I think the choice becomes clear and we will pick Vernon Davis at 4.
New England did take 2 athletic tight ends in Graham and Watson. But both were already with an established team that was set pretty much everywhere else. And both were at the end of the round. I don't think Tangini will do something just because NE did it, like some people on this board believe, but it is something to consider.
and when have you ever heard of the OC having final say. The word out of Tenn is Floyd Reese doesn't take input from his HC let alone his OC...
If it plays out like that these are my picks. My picks are based off of me watching the players actually play(crazy idea!), production, and if they would fit into our team design 1. D'Brickashaw Ferguson Pros: Hes the safest pick IMO. 4 year starter, awesome pass protector, is a character guy, has shown commitment to getting better(as seen in him bulking up in the past 2 years), athletic, and very few defensive players have beaten him. Cons: Not ideal size, is ok in run blocking, and when he does get beat, gets beat bad. 2. Vernon Davis Pros: Literally a WR in a TEs body(he was a WR but they moved him freshmen year). Awesome hands, is a gym rat, good work ethic, insanely fast and strong. He could be the combination of Gates and Shockey, he could be our Gockey Cons: Blocking aint that great. He trys to block using his athleticism as opposed to using technique. 3. A.J. Hawk Pros: Hes everything you want in a linebacker. Size, speed, technique, athleticism. Cons: He had tons of talent around him, so was it a product of the system/teammates or was he really that good. 4. Matt Leinart Pros: Hes a proven winner and hes clutch. Never loses his cool. Has the mind of an NFL QB Cons: His arm aint that great. Had tons of talent around him. Some question if his heart is even in football. 5.Vince Young Pros: Super athletic and takes over games. Great arm strength. Cons: Horrible technique. Improvises too much. Played in the shotgun too much. Horrible wonderlic score. Truly a boom or bust.
I agree with you on everything you said except I think Brick can be elite. I just don't want him because we have a good LT, we need a RT and we can get one later on. That list would be exactly mine too. I'd like Hawk the best because he'd be the last missing piece to our defense, and him and Vilma would be dominating RBs for years. We just need one more OLB for our defense to be complete, because Hobson is too slow to start in a 3-4, and why not take the best in Hawk? Ellis-Robertson-Kimo Barton-Vilma-Kassel-Hawk Dyson-Barrett-Rhodes-Coleman not a bad starting defense, especially in a 3-4. LBs are the most important thing in a 3-4 defense, and we'd have two great ones. If we didn't get Hawk, I'd rather just trade down and then get Cutler or Young, and pick up extra picks. Even though I'd rather take a playmaker at 4 like Davis or a QB, and Manny Lawson later on, we wouldn't be able to get him at 29 and I don't love Carpenter, Howard, or Ryans.
To be honest, I'd love to see the team draft Vince Young, just to see what happens. Imagine the board, it'd be half supremely happy, half utterly devastated. The new administration taking a chance on greatness like that would really impress me, and have me confidant in the future.
I really like Baker, but I'm starting to like Vernon Davis. The guy is a beast and one insane TE with lots of speed. I would not mind taking him or Mario at #4. As long as it ain't D'Brick or Young.
