So far, it looks like it really won't matter much who our Qb will be does it? This team will win games with it's defense and perhaps on occasion, it's offense. I do wonder though how this concentration on the defense will affect how Schotts gameplans now.

Will we become the uber-conservative offense or one that will attempt, on occasion, a deep strike or a deep out. Will we be a 3 run and done offense? I dunno but it sure looks as though our offense is not going to be the focus in '09 but only time will tell.

What do we know so far? Our OC has a conservative tendency and has been known to be predictable. We've seen playcalling that would make the wishbone seem innovative. How much of that was Mangini or Schotts? We're about to find out aren't we..

I'm thinking this team, being in the B'more model, will be happy scoring fewer than the 400 plus last year as long as it translates into more wins. That's why there's no sense of urgency regarding the Qb position. We really don't need a Peyton Manning if this dfense is half as good as it looks on paper.

The Bottom Line? We just need to score one more point than the other guy.

    Thoughts??

We need to draft a WR early, and bring in a Vet to make the transition earlier for that rook. I don't care about QB, don't waste a early round pick on one when we just need clemens to be a game manger

the jets need a real good punter because they are going to need to win the field position battle if they are going to put points up on offense.

We will still need weapons even in a ball control offense, look at Pittsburgh as the example with enough options at WR to still be able to score when the run is shut down or have the ability to pound the ball. It is extremely difficult to depend on just a running attack in the NFL for your points

I say bring in a WR in the 2nd round and let him and Ratliff build a rapport together. You only need the QB to be a game manager, but that doesn't mean it's going to be easy to play the position nor will it be consistently the case. The Jets will need whoever ends up at QB to win games for them in the 4th quarter at some point next season.

I'm with you. We do need a solid wide receiver. I'm not to concerned with qb, our OL and our running game should be sufficient enough to carry our offense, as long as they run the ball more and don't make any stupid passes, we should be alright.

ya exactly, i wouldn't be totally opposed to draft moreno to make the running game even more emphatic, but only if we have another WR lol

    Actually, I tend to disagree.

True, the QB position has seen a huge change, but except the WR1 situation, the entire starting offense is staying intact from last year. And it's not even like Coles was setting the entire league on fire or something either. If the QB position settles down - if the QB matures in time, that is - then, with a strong running game and dominant defense, we may still see high-flying offense. Especially if it was Mangini handcuffing the entire offense last year. Schottenheimer did show a lot of creative thinking in his first year as the OC, and I am hoping he can show that again. If all goes as planned, this team will be able to maul the opposing team on both fronts - which is a pleasing thought, actually.

Good call. But does this offense really need a more than a game manager at this point? We really don't have standout personnel on the wings but are built instead as a ground pounding offense coupled with a newly assembled stifling defense.

Shotts may or may not have been handcuffed by Mangini. We really won't ever know the answer will we. Beyond his first year, Schotts became more conservative as time went on as did Mangini. I would suggest they both kinda handcuffed each other in an attempt to not lose games by taking chances.

Lets see who they draft in the first round. I believe that will be a talisman as to what kind of offense we'll see this year..

It's pretty clear we will be a run first ball control team with a solid D. We will try to win games that way because we are either going to go with a very inexperienced QB or and middle of the road vet.

Schotty's game plan will be conservative and I say draft a WR. Let a young QB grow into his own with a young WR. Gettting a boldin or housh in here with no one to throw them the ball won't help.

IMO defense is the most important of the three phases of football. I like that we're building our d. I think our running game is strong, and we can gain further ground with Play action. Qb is last of our worries, WR is more important than Qb. Clemens, Leftwich, or Ratliff, will get the job done on offense.

Indeed. Maybe Jets won't need anything more than a game manager. I am of an opinion that, there will be times when the QB has to bail the team out. Of course, we are not there yet - not now anyway.

Still, if the entire offense (sans QB/WR1) is staying intact, there is no reason why one should expect the production to drop in such a drastic manner - Jets did falter at the tail end of the season, but still managed to score 3rd most score in the entire league. With QB change, that will change - but I strongly doubt it will stoop down to Trent Dilfer level of ineptitude. If anything, the starting QB will have two very good security blanket in Dustin Keller and Chansi Stuckey. With a stout run game and reliable slot receiver + all-purpose threat of TE, this offense doesn't need that much. It's not even like Cotchery is bad either; he's one hell of a WR as a #2.

If Jets can find that #1 WR from the draft somehow (without sacrificing RD1/RD2 picks, that is) then the team is set for years - or so in my eyes.

Flacco attempted several deep passes each game, and connected on some of them. This helped the Ravens' run game because the D had to stay somewhat honest.

Even if we're a run-heavy, Defense-led team, we still need a QB and WR that soften up the D and threaten to soften up the D. Maybe Clowney is that guy; maybe it's Nicks or Britt.
