Entirely correct. You cannot win a Super Bowl without some sort of offense. And unless you're Paul Hackett, someone's got to throw the ball and someone's got to catch it on third down.
The D is fine we need to focus on the O in the 1st 2 mabye 3 rounds than after that focus on D depth.
Ask the Cardinals how they get by without one of their top 2 receivers being a burner. Solid, tough catches, and quickness/vision rather than speed. Of course we can pay him less than Jones. Rookie contracts are negotiated on a sliding scale based on the player ahead of you, with position mattering a bit as well. Jonathan Stewart was drafted 13th last year and signed for under 3 million per. We'd likely pay a RB this year a similar amount. 4 years, 10 million or 5 years, 12 - 13. It's a position many were willing to address last year if McFadden fell to us. I think the FO will go defense or receiver, but it would be smart to build up at RB early. Giants are a good example. DHB is largely an unknown at this point. I've heard the excuses about the Maryland QBs, but it doesn't change the fact that he's unproven. I hate drafting WRs based solely on measurables and potential. It's one of the riskiest moves you can make in the draft, and I don't see them going in that direction. Harvin would be the smartest choice for the types of plays you talk about, and I wouldn't want him either. You'll see Leon involved a good deal more on screens. At least one of the first two picks will go to the defense. I think the only way one of those picks goes RB is if our choices for ILB and CB are off the board, we can't trade down, and we figure Gilbert will still be available in the 2nd. I was a Tyson Jackson fan for a while, but more knowledgeable posters (Mr. E, naturally) are convincing me that Gilbert is the way to go.
The defense is not fine. We have no backups whatsoever at the ILB position and no depth at DE, where our starting talent is questionable at best. We are 3 deep at CB. At least one of those positions will be addressed in the first 2 rounds.
To the OP: Nice post. After seeing the way some people on this board mangle the English language with boneheaded nonsense it's nice to read a well thought out idea of what might be the right moves in the offseason - weird punctuation or not. That said, I don't know if I like the idea of looking for a RB or WR in the first round. It is always enticing as a fan to think about getting a big offensive threat in the first round of the draft, but those picks so often end up being disappointments. I?d rather see the FO and coaching staff concentrate on putting together all of the basic building blocks (e.g. solid O and D lines) before we start looking for the next big thing.
The reason why I wouldnt be against the Jets FO drafting an explosive back like Moreno in the 1st round is because of injuries... The leauge has really turned into a two back system, what if Thomas Jones gets injured? We would be insane to think than Leon Washington would be able to carry the work load each and every week and who would be the backup to Leon? What if Leon goes down? Then we are in trouble 4-real because Thomas Jones IS getting up there in age. I'm all for drafting Sanchez with our 1st pick if he's still on the board, but I wouldnt mind drafting a RB either. I just love what Matt Ryan did for the Falcons and Flacco REALLY had the support of the Ravens defensvie players, they loved what that kid could do for the team and I honestly believe that Sanchez would be in a perfect position to start for this Jets team because we have a solid Defense, really good O-Line and two really good RB's with a WR in Cotchery who should come into his own this year. Draft Sanchez, I'm all for it.
We'll draft a RB but in the later rounds, Jones has a few more years in him, he's not a typical 30 yr old back, he's always split carries with someone else the Jets are his first team as a feature back, that makes a huge difference as far as wear and tear. He also conditions like a beast. I see us trading down collecting more picks. All the needs we have (except QB) can be addressed in later rounds, no QB in the first Sanchez is not our answer.
totally agree with this post. we have upgraded the talent on defense so far and just the fact that we have ryan's aggressive defense scheme instead of mangini's conservative scheme is going to help us do wonders. however, i think we are so lopsided if you compare our defense with our offense. we need to start concentrating on upgrading our offense so we can be competitive if we were to fall behind in games. we need to have the ability to put up points (something we didn't do very well once we got behind during the pennington years). a lot of people are saying BPA, i think it should be best BPA according to our team's new philosophy. i really hope we go MORENO then DHB. i know the depth on defense might not be very deep but at least we have starters. we can fill depth in the later rounds but the first day of the draft should be players that can make an impact starting. the reason i say we should draft a RB is because its a lot easier for RBs to adapt to the pro level than QBs. whoever we start at QB this year will not be a seasoned veteran and will need to "manage the game." so give us another weapon at RB since that is the philosophy rex has anyways. you saw what baltimore did last season. run the ball first, pass if second, play field position, and no turnovers. however, the starters on offense at WR and soon to be RB positions (in a year or so, tjones is gonna be all downhill from here) are even less deep. DHB can give us that #1 WR threat, or at least someone that poses the threat of a long pass downfield. without that threat as part of our offense, opposing defenses are just gonna play their safeties in the box all day long making it harder to run the ball with 8 or even 9 ppl in the box, and give us less room for the short passes we throw.
Good point and it will help our QBs if we bring in more talent to distribute the ball to. As it is right now, teams will stack 8 or 9 in the box and basically dare us to go through the air
which is why we need a threat like DHB right? at least the corner and safety would have to go with him on the fly route and it will open up space for a drag route underneath, keller in whichever seam that safety is helping on the WR, and the run if the safety starts a few yards back with over the top help.
Yep. You still don't have to have that many pass plays, just enough to keep the D honest. That being the object it's actually far better to go with a deep threat since the Jets already have Keller and Cotch.
If you noticed last year, our defense fell apart when Jenkins was on the sidelines. Our most glaring need is for someone to back him up when he's hurt/resting. That should be one of our highest priorities, otherwise all the work we've done upgrading the defense will be at least parially wasted.
Ok... food for a thought: 1. Fitz, Q, Colston; all notable, legitimate #1 guys. What do they lack in common? Elite Speed. If speed was such a concern, they were not even supposed to belong in this league. It's more about how you utilize the talent you have with schemes, than having 100 yard track competition at WR. While I wouldn't mind going WR in draft, I definitely wouldn't go with WR at any of day 1 pick. We've all seen how things went sour with WR picks at Detroit. We don't need to shoot ourselves at the foot. Detroit did that for us - not once, twice to be exact. 2. I am still of an opinion that this D needs some more of talent - especially at DL, NT most notably. I'd like to see them go with D in 1st, and address what they can on O with 2nd round.
MY first priority would be a NT to back up Jenkins, and not just a back-up, a fully ready guy that can be the starter if Jenkins gets tired again
