Patriots, Jets tried to beat Vikings to Harvin

Judge: Vikings get more explosive with Harvin

The Minnesota Vikings weren't the only team interested in Florida wide receiver Percy Harvin. The New York Jets and New England Patriots were, too, with the Jets so eager they offered Philadelphia an attractive package of draft picks to move to the Eagles' 21st position -- one spot ahead of Minnesota.

As we know now, the Eagles didn't bite.

Instead, they moved up two spots to draft wide receiver Jeremy Maclin at the 19th spot. But that was only after they were approached by the Jets with an offer of four draft picks, including two in 2010. According to someone with knowledge of the situation, one of those was "a high first-day pick," and the other was a high second-day choice -- presumably a third or fourth rounder.

"The Jets were pretty aggressive," said the source.

The question, of course, was whom the Jets were interested in acquiring. When I asked if it was Harvin, a league source said, "that's the player I think they wanted. In fact, that's who I know it was." The Jets had only three draft picks last weekend, using one on quarterback Mark Sanchez but none on a wide receiver. The club has one quality wide receiver -- last year's leading pass-catcher Jerricho Cotchery -- though tight end Dustin Keller has the sure hands of a wide receiver.

Laveranues Coles, who had one less catch (70) last season than Cotchery, signed as an unrestricted free agent with Cincinnati.

According to one source close to Harvin, New England worked him out prior to the draft and was interested in acquiring him. In fact, said the source, Harvin's understanding was that the Patriots were so interested in him with the 23rd pick they told him to stay quiet about the workout. With Harvin off the board, the Patriots traded out of the 23rd spot and moved into the second round where they had four choices.

This story sounds like BS - 4 picks for harvin including a high pick next year?

I believe it. A lot of people are saying Tanny and Woody had a chub for Harvin. I doubt it was a '10 1st and 3rd like they're saying though. Maybe the '09 3rd and 4th and '10 2nd and 4th or something along those lines. Either way, who gives a shit. Didn't happen. We're going after a WR in FA or going with what we have.

That deal would have destroyed us. We'd still have the same number of holes we currently have, and we'd be missing 2 picks from next year.

Minnesota got a great deal there, and I was glad to see Harvin go to them. He'll make their offense instantly better and fills a need for that short game receiving threat that they're lacking. I guarantee Adrian Peterson was thrilled with the selection.

are you serious? the jets were looking to move back up to the first round again. that will cost a minimum of a first plus.
teams don't just give away first round draft choices for nothing....
tanny is a wheeler and dealer when it comes to grabbing a supreme talent. he did it with revis, so i have no doubt this source is likely telling the truth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I understand it takes some ammo to move back into the first round. You're right Tanny loves to wheel and deal too. It just sounds crazy for a receiver.

The thing to remember is that the draft is over, reporters can essentially make up whatever they want at this point. Can't imagine that we'd sacrifice any 2010 picks for a very raw wide receiver. If it was for Maclin I could understand it a little bit more but for Harvin? I don't buy it

I don't see why Jet fans are so against Harvin. Doesn't make sense in any way, he has the ability and the production, what more do you want in a prospect?

less risk.. don't need to trade 2010 picks from a player with off-field and character issues.. I'm not saying he doesn't have he potential to be a great player.. in fact if he can stay healthy and clean his role a little.. the Vikings could have gotten a steal..
