C'mon with this already... The Jets paid in the form of three borderline scrubs that might not have made the roster on any successful team, and a second round pick. Sometimes, you have to take the big risk to get the big reward. We can continue down the road to mediocrity, making the playoffs every other year, only to be eliminated, at best, two rounds in. Or, we can make a move like this (or, for that matter, a move like securing Favre last year) and hope to hit the jackpot. As a Jets fan, sure, I liked Elam's play-hard mentality and his two big plays from last year. He is serviceable, and replaceable. I also liked Ratliff's potential, or the idea of him being something great. But, people who have watched more than two highlights from one preseason game determined that Sanchez has more potential to be great. You want success. MT wants success. WJ wants success. RR wants success. The incentives are in place -- they made the move because it will change the franchise. Hopefully, it will change the franchise as Manning did for the Colts. I find it unnecessary to address the value of Coleman. This board has complained about that guy from the moment he stepped onto the field. Now, the Jets find value for him in the form of a potential franchise QB, and some here complain? Nice job MT and Company. Sometimes you have to take a risk to be great. I applaud your willingness to take that risk.
Has anyone seen Sanchez throw a pass in the NFL? why is he so great? How many USC players got drafted yesterday? Doesn't that tell you what a great team he had around him? He doesn't have great size. He doesn't have a great arm. He played one season on a talented team. Why is Sanchez better than Matt Leinart? What makes this guy so great? Cutler made a bad Vanderbilt team into a bowl team....what did Sanchez do besides get the keys to the Ferrari of college football? Tannenbaum reminds me of a little kid that gets excited about a toy and gives up anything without thinking. ie. last year, they cut Chad without even attempting to trade him.....we could have used some more picks this year.
I still think we could have done without giving up the 2ND. and IMO, getting rid of salaries + the Franchise QB is exactly what Tannywood wanted.
I am ecstatic about how this deal worked out. I never would have imagined that we could have pulled off a move like that so cheaply. If Sanchez turns out to be even half the QB that people expect him to be it seems like it will still be well worth it. We didn't give up any key players on the roster and only gave up ONE pick in the deal - incredible. I was really skeptical about the idea of trading up because I thought we would have to give up too much - ha! This is looking like highway robbery! Go Tanny! And on top of that we also landed an excellent RB prospect in Shonn Greene. I really can't find much to complain about here. Kudos to the Jets for what looks to be a brilliant draft - and I wasn't even on the Sanchez bandwagon. Fuck Yeah!!!
I didn't want to start a new thread because we have had enough FA threads going on on this board but does anyone think signing Vonnie Holliday to be a rotational player atleast for the year at 3-4 DE is a good idea? he is a FA
USC has had great teams for several years. you act like it is just a team as a whole and not a group of outstanding players. Tanny has done a very good job as GM. SANCHEZ 6-2 227 BRADY # Height: 6-4 # Weight: 225 BREES 6-0 209 ELI 6-4 225 PEYTON 6-5 230 I can delve more into your ridiculous arguments but it is late
We gave mangini his 3 guys basically 3 guys who werent going to start for us (Sanchez/Clemens over Rattliff, Leonhard over Elam and Douglas over Coleman) an swapped 1st rounders and gave a 2nd. I Think we got a good deal to move up 12 Slots and only time will tell if this really was worth it. At the moment i think it is.
The problem is, many of the people answering the polls on ESPN are either "newbie" football fans, or fans of other sports, trying to get to the polls THEY care about (I.E. the NBA, god I can't stand basketball). Many numbers get skewed due to people simply not having a formed opinion, or just not caring at all. Polls on NFL.com would be slightly more accurate. Anyway, obviously this board has spoken, the only player that was remotely valuable was Abe Elam (he actually did make some game-changing plays last season, but I'm not going to cry about it), and he really isn't a fit for the new and improved defensive unit. If Sanchez is even half the quarterback that I expect him to be, it was well worth it.
He doesn't have great size. Okay, he's actually an average sized quarterback, a little bit taller would be preferable, but he's not undersized by any means He doesn't have a great arm. He actually has a very good arm, he doesn't have the velocity of a Jay Cutler . At least he isn't whiny little crybaby though. I'd rather have a leader than a drama queen, thanks He played one season on a talented team. A talented team that has produced a plethora of successful NFL players, including quarterbacks (but of course USC has had its share of draft busts). There is a reason that USC has several players drafted into the NFL every season. USC is known for helping players get mentally ready for the NFL, and for a developing college kid that is invaluable. Why is Sanchez better than Matt Leinart? Did you watch the draft the year that Leinart was drafted? Leinart on draft day, showed he was an insecure little tool. When he slid down the draft board, he showed he was not only pissed off, he looked emotionally disturbed. Quarterbacks in the NFL need 3 things, Leadership qualities, love for the game, and physical/mental ability. If you saw Sanchez get drafted, and paid attention to any of the interviews with him afterward, it is very clear that he possesses both the leadership qualities, and love for the game. Time will tell if he has the ability to become one of the "greats". However, I am very confident that he will be at least "good" What makes this guy so great? Enthusiasm, intelligence, apparent strong foundation, love for the team and the sport, oh yeah and he throws the ball pretty damn well too. He's an accurate passer with a "strong" arm, not a beastly arm, but a strong one nonetheless. He showed the jets coaching staff that he can study plays very well. He picked apart a beastly Penn State defense in the biggest game so far of his career. We don't KNOW for sure if this guy is going to be a star in this league, we can't make that prognosis just yet. All I can say, is this guy has what a lot of QB draft busts lack... Spunk. Anyone with a decent build can mold their body into a football player, but you can't change "heart". This kid has the stuff you can't teach, let's teach him what we can and watch him become a damn good football player.
