To the OP , I'm glad you started this thread , wondering the same thing. If someone had whispered in my ear that we were about to trade for up for Sanchez and involve one of our QBs going to the Browns , I would have bet my house on that QB being KC , NOT Ratliffe , for the very reasons stated. KC has made all the right noises since becoming a Jet , but there comes a point where he must sit down and think , WHAT have I got to do here ??? The Jets worked out Sanchez , so they know what to expect. So if Sanchez lights it up in TC , its going to be hard not to start him next season , if he doesn't , KC will be looking over his shoulder and have the added pressure on him . The very same thing that happened with Pennington and KC. This short video to me suggests yet another open competition > Mike T http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80ffc1a4 Rex Ryan http://www.nfl.com/videos?videoId=09000d5d80ffc19f If you believe what Rex says here , Sanchez will be starting.
Clemens been through so much adversity already he will be fine and dont be shocked if he lights it up in the pre-season (an no Ricky im not talkin about that cheeba cheeba ya'll!) and wins the starting slot while Sanchez backs up.
I hope he gets after it the way Brees did in 2004 when SD drafted Rivers. Clemens still has a chance to prove he can play in this league, it may not be w/ the Jets but he has to prepare like it's his job and perform this season if given the chance.
what do you guys think? Sanchez is the starter now? or is there a definite qb competition?...i hope sanchez is the starter...clemens is worthless
It better pump him up. How would you like to leave the team that drafted you? Going out in a blaze of glory with a nice payday looking at you or end like a whimper with nothing for you except your retirement papers?
This is obviously KC's last gasp with the Jets. With so much riding on Sanchez's expectations, at this point it seems like Clemens would have to absolutely blow the coaches away in TC to win the starting job. I do kinda feel bad for the guy - he seems to have done all the right things so far - but if the organization feels that we have a true franchise QB in Sanchez, which I hope that we do - no reason to put off the inevitable... Wow - it's amazing how quickly the whole scenario changes.
I don't know what it means, but if Clemens wants to be an NFL quarterback, even with the arrival of Sanchez, this is his chance to step up and grab it. He's going to be a free agent soon, and no team will give him a chance at a starter's job. This is his chance to step up and be the man. Sanchez will be the quarterback in time, but if Clemens can play well enough to keep him on the bench, that would be great. His leash would probably be short, but at least he'd be a starting quarterback.
Cassel sat behind Brady for a few years and learned the game behind Brady so i dont think you can use cassel as an example...
that isn't exactly the best logic. Brady is an NFL superstar, Clemens has only started a handful of games. About the only thing that Mark could learn from KC is the playbook, and I think he as the intelligence to do that on his own. Here's my take on it; this kid has the poise, he seems to embrace the media... he has good footwork, great accuracy, and a good amount of intelligence. Put him into a situation where he's not going to have to win games all the time, just simply to not lose them. We WILL be a run-first team this year, let this kid go in and manage games, make some easy throws, maybe hit David Clowney down the field now and then in low-risk situations... but we have 3 guys that can make things happen AFTER they touch the ball (Leon, J-Co, and Brad Smith... in that order). Let Mark utilize screen passes and short safe routes, combined with a pounding rushing attack. That is the best way to develop a quarterback in this league. We have the offensive line to protect him, let him stand in that pocket and get a feel for it. If he turns out to be a game manager, we still have a great shot to win games this year and going forward. If he turns out to be the quarterback we're all hoping for, then you'll see a different offense next year, with a strong balance and a true leader behind center.
I don't see it as a negative. If you are going to be a QB in this league you better have thick skin because this stuff happens all the time. If you are going to lead a football team you use this as the ultimate motivator to be the best you possibly can be and never be satisfied at where you are. If Clemens pouts it is time to quit football al together. If Clemens plays all next year and we go into the playoffs or something, only good things can happen. We make up our mind that we want him or we make up our mind to trade him for picks and if he got us into the playoffs he would command a pretty good asking price. I see the whole thing as a win-win.
If anyone is going to succeed in NY as a QB, people shouldn't worry so much about how they feel. If they get hurt feelings they are wasting their time playing here.
Exactly. Sanchez is inexperienced. If he wins the job in training camp is our best quarterback, I'd love it. But Clemens winning it would be better for our team as a whole, since we would find out what we have in KC. At that point, we could decide he's either backup material and keep him, decide he sucks and let him walk, or trade him and get some compensation back. But right now, we have no idea what Clemens is. Obviously, they aren't super confident in his long-term ability. Still, he was a 2nd round pick, has some tools, and we don't know if he can play or not. And knowing is half the battle.
Unconfirmed reports are that Clemens hasn't gotten out of bed since the NFL draft, is in fetal position with his thumb in his mouth and family members are considering shock therapy.
Hopefully Clemens feels the need to play like his life depends on it as a result, in order to save his career. This may be his last chance to ever have a shot at starting anywhere in the NFL ever again.
Clemens will get chances elsewhere with other teams down the road. He's going to need some luck but there's no way this is his last stop. Not with the burn rate on NFL QB's and the fact that teams are always looking for another QB to add into the mix unless they have a star there already.
That may be true, but there's going to be a big difference between him winning the starting job and having a big year vs riding the bench again all year... the difference being a starting job and a fat contract with a new team, and simply catching on as a #2/#3 somewhere and hoping that he gets a shot through injury / general ineptitude.
