As someone else on this forum pointed out, with Josh Freeman taken by the Bucs with our original #17 pick, and with Byron Leftwich signed to the Bucs with a multi-year deal, and with the rest of the logjam in Tampa Bay, it looks as if Brian Griese is the odd man out. Griese certainly has the experience that Clemens lacks, which makes him a much safer back-up QB than Clemens whose claim to fame is that he has previously owned the worst QB rating in the league. The Jets somehow wound up with the #5 pick in the draft to snatch Sanchez. Will the team somehow end up with Griese, as well? And if that scenario occurs, expect Clemens to ask for and receive his release from the Jets. This would be comical, as the pre-season was supposed to be a competition between Clemens and Ratliff, neither of which could be wearing Green and White with the start of the season.
why? Let Clemmens start the season, while Sanchez acclimates to the NFL. If he does well, you have trade bait. If not Sanchez takes the reigns. avoid a Drew Brees situation. no Griese, he sucks...... and I doubt he'd sign up to be #3 (unless he just wants to collect a paycheck)
We're going to sign this kid to a multimillion dollar deal. How the hell do you NOT start him day one?
Because we don't want to kill his career by starting him too early. He's only a junior, he's a bit raw. If he starts this season, it'll be late. Most of the QBs who flame out have the assistance of their team and a rapid starting process.
It's not like he's coming into a dinky team. We already have a great defense, a great offensive line, and potentially a great running game. If he beats out Clemens in training camp there's no reason why he couldn't start day one.
Because you don't have to.Starting him off the bat would be a HUGE mistake, unless he just flat out blows the CS away in TC. Remember how the Giants worked Manning in gradually? Clemens would be a better BU then Griese because he is already familiar with the offense and is younger. The only thing that may come into play here is how all this effects Clemens head. Can he go from the mindset of having an opportunity to be the "man" to accepting the fact that he never will be?
Clemens, if he is any kind of competitive athlete at all, will use this as an opportunity to impress a coaching staff other than ours that he can infact play. He NEEDS to start this year or his career as a possible starter is all but over. But in the same frame of mind, he's got to know now his future is not here, unless he plans on being a back-up for the remainder of his career, which if ya ask me isn't the worst thing in the world...
Really? Wow, what a surprise. I don't think I've ever seen you post this in every thread about quarterbacks.
He also, for all of his talent, has only 1 season of starting experience. It's no coincidence that the guys who come in and find immediate success in the league are the multi-year starters out of college, generally coming from a pro-style offense. Sanchez has the latter going for him, but not the former. I'd expect him to be on the bench to start the season. He may come in and start if we struggle, but they're going to be careful with him.
Would be a smart move we need to bring in a vet and a journeyman like Griese will help things out and i dont think no one expects Griese to come in and be Broadway joe or bob griese for that matter. Just some veteran depth.
This is how I'd like to see the Jets handle him. Unless Clemens proves to be completely incompetent, give Sanchez the clipboard and let Clemens lead the team for a year. If he does well we can maybe get some draft picks for him later on and if he doesn't do anything we can slide Sanchez in next year no problem.
