Between the retirement of Favre and the loss of Coles will we get any compensation picks? What are the rules for getting one?
I'm not sure we get anything for either of those. The Coles situation was done in a way to minimize the cap hit, maybe that affects things. And the secret formula the NFL uses takes into account the age of the player, older players result in worse compensatory picks. Thats why the Steelers didn't get much when Faneca left and the Pats got a 3rd pick when Samuel left.
from wiki: pretty sure you get nothing for retirement, and since we released favre i do not know if he counts as a true " free agent" in this sense if he signed with another team. regardless, with the number of players we signed, i dont know if we lost more players to free agency than we signed (baker, coles, let's pretend favre, who else?)...
I think Coles will be taken into account. IIRC, his contract was modified to allow him to become a free agent. Signing Scott, Leonhard, Douglas, etc. will more than offset it though and I suspect we'll get no significant compensatory selections.
As it stands right now they have lost more than they signed. Signed 7, lost 8 that have signed elsewhere with 9 others still available. I am sure we will sign more but some of the Jets FA's will probably be signed also. They also take into account contract amounts. They might get some late round comp picks but there is really no way to figure it out at this point since none of us really knows the whole formula for determining the comp picks.
Players cut don't count as "players lost" under the compensatory formula. (Nor do players traded, like Elam/Ratliff/Coleman.) So Coles and Baker, who were released, don't count as free agents lost. (With Coles, they voided the final year of his contract.) The Jets have certainly signed more free agents than they lost. No chance of any compensatory picks.
Well, maybe but the other part of that which I didn't mention was that the players are also rated so you would have to lose more valuable players then you sign for comp picks too and the Jets only seem to be signing worthwhile FAs.
I'm still not sure on Coles. The final year was voided, but he then remained under contract for a few days until the reworked contract came to an end. He wasn't cut outright.
I doubt the Jets would get any compensation picks. Here are the free agents the Jets lost: Eric Barton, CJ Mosley, Mike Nugent, Hank Poteat, Cody Spencer and possibly Coles (I don't think he was technically released). Jesse Chatman and Bubba Franks are unsigned UFAs. Here are the free agents the Jets gained: Howard Green, Larry Izzo, Jim Leonhard, Bart Scott and Donald Strickland. An important thing to keep in mind is that 2009 production does factor into the formula of free agent compensation. If Coles counts as a free agent, there's a less than 50% chance they can add a late pick. If he doesn't, there is no chance IMO.
