http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/giants/#ixzz0F3BPVsNr&B The players who show up to rookie mini-camp each year on a tryout basis only are the NFL?s longest of long shots. But at least six of those longshots came through for the Giants this weekend. The Giants announced today that they signed six of their tryout players as soon as rookie camp ended. C Alex Derenthal (Temple) and DE Tommie Hill (Colorado State) were the only two true rookies that earned contracts. And four veterans were signed too ? WR Shaun Bodiford (most recently with Green Bay), RB Allen Patrick (a seventh-round pick by Baltimore in 2008), LB Kelvin Smith (that ?kid from Syracuse? as Tom Coughlin called him, who was a seventh round pick by the Dolphins in ?08) and TE George Wrighster, who spent the last six years with the Jacksonville Jaguars. All six will join the veterans, the draft class and the undrafted free agents at the Giants? rookie mini-camp June 16-18. Of course, their contracts are not guaranteed so that invitation is always subject to change.
I sort of predicted that running back Allen Patrick would go to the Giants and thats what happened. The Giants are deeper at running back than we are and they keep taking our guys, Derrick Ward, Danny Ware and now Patrick. I guess they trust our scouting department more than we do. If we had kept Ware and Ward we wouldn't have needed to trade for TJ or draft Greene.
