Well, then that wouldn't be "backloading" the contract which is what you originally suggested we do. I'm sure Mike T wants to put together these contracts that make sense, but unfortunately that's only half the equation. These players are looking to make their money right away for fear of career ending injuries and what not. Agents usually have player, team and league stats down cold when coming into these negotiations to make sure that the deal makes sense for both the organizations and the players. They probably sold Mike T. on paying Jones "prime" money off a good season with the Bears. I mean, right off the bat we lost leverage because we knew we were getting a player (and prob the only offensive player) that showed up to that Super Bowl. It was just a matter of getting the numbers Jones liked together to get him to sign off on his contract.
That's a great point. I can't believe I was ignoring that. We'd be best off loading up a contract for Leon this season when we have the cap space. I don't really know that we'd still be able to afford Braylon, though. There's only so much wiggle room given for the uncapped 2010 season.
This thread has the answers for every unanswered question...including the Jets' running back situation: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=44041& First, we trade the dominating safety Eric Smith for Ryan Torain and Cory Boyd. Second, we trade Thomas Jones, Coles, Stuckey, and a 4th to a division rival, the Buffalo Bills, for Marshawn Lynch AND Lee Evans. C'mon guys...let's be realistic and trade garbage for starters.
