The one major gripe I had with Mangini, whom I still believe will be a successful HC in this league someday if he'll just stop trying to be Belichick 2.0, is that the team had no personality. There was no identity, and therefore the team had no idea who they were as a group. Rex Ryan has changed all of that, and in a hurry. His stamp is all over this team, expecially defense. I have wanted to see defensive play like that from our boys for YEARS, and yesterday my patience was rewarded. They don't play on the balls of their feet, waiting for the play to develop. They attack the football with frightening ferocity. They have an identity at long last, and a head coach who knows not only the technical side of coaching, but can relate to the players as well. I'd be remiss if I left out Brian Shottenhiemer in this post. His called a beautiful game, and had his guys prepared to play. I think that he and Sanchez are a fine partership, and if we can hold onto him for a few years (he will be a HC before too long), then this team has a great shot at doing something very special. TLDR Version: We have some excellent coaching, it appears. About time!
Schotty is no longer handcuffed by a QB who does not know the playbook. I agree with all of your post. It is a fun team to watch now.
"We're not playing not to lose." Watching a replay of Sanchez's post game presser, he said that Ryan and Shotty told him they are going to play to win the game, not play to not lose. Mangini could learn a lot from that. Too often last season, Mangini went conservative to avoid turnovers, and it was one of the things that cost us the season. It's the coaching, stupid. And we have it.
Schottenheimer was certainly exonerated today. I hope this lasts the whole season... it also makes me wonder how bad Sutton REALLY is, and how much of that was Mangini? Great post Tony.
Tone, you nailed it man. We're dictating the pace of the game instead of reacting to the game. I haven't had that much fun watching a Jet D play since '98 and '82 before that. They just kept on attacking. 1st qtr, 4qtr, it didn't matter to VonRyan as he let the dawgs loose time and again. I just might redo my ST if this keeps up!
Both coordinators called aggressive plays all game. Defensively on the 1st play when Scott flattened Schaub, it set the tempo defensively for the entire game. On the offense, Brian kept attacking downfield, instead of being complacent. Both guys did an excellent job and both deserved the game ball.
The biggest difference between so far this year from last year's team that swooned down the stretch has to be Ryan and the rest of the CS. I have my fingers crossed, but I am becoming increasingly hopeful the Jets finally have a good HC, perhaps even a great one. I would love to never have to take that back.
At first, I thought Schotty was being a little too tricky - uunbalanced line, Seminole O, Brad Smith on a reverse (again) and I very much appreciated when he got back to bunch formation, play action passing, quick-hitting gut runs. Now, overall, the game plan succeeded admirably, but I must admit, Schotty is always a little gimmicky for my taste, and this was no exception. Rex, of course, is THE MAN
One more thing concerning our coach; I’m really hoping to see Rex push Bellicheat to the ground Sunday and super-fly snuka him. Clearly this would break every bone in his body and smush him flatter than a pancake. I sure hope Rex can get us a trophy in the next three years…before his heart gives way. His stress level + 600 lbs can’t be healthy.
The Kid throws a pick and our coach doesn't go into a shell. That's what I'm talking about!!!!! I never felt nervous and that another thing to be happy about. we owned these guys and I'm really psyched up about next week.
I think that's what opened up the run late. Sanchez was winging that thing around and we stayed consistent with the run. Later when they were defending against the pass or at least dropping another guy into coverage , we started to get longer runs.
