Ok so here's whats up in my eyes at least. Debating is fine, actually it's a good thing to have a debate. Seems alot of people start cutting throats in here, trying to "get personal" over a keyboard. Its one thing to argue over if we should have drafted D'brick or Leinart, but hows does telling someone to "suck my balls" (which by the way is a hilarious insult) come into play? Its ridiculous. Now here's my break down on things as I have said on a thread or two, maybe the subject of the thread will actually get you to look at it from both stand points. The front office did a great job by building up the line. Last season our passing sucked shit, our run game....what run game? was terrible, we had 3 QBs go down....Stevie Wonder could have seen that shit. A strong O-line could fix every single problem with that QB- Pennington-Fiel-and Vdog all went down, so obviously I think we can all say hands down that's the O-lines lack of doing their job. Put a fresh O-line in with strong picks they anchor the QB position....giving us less Int(due to having that extra 2 seconds) a higher Qb rating, less chance of a QB getting injured from extreme amounts of sacks, more time in the pocket WR- having a strong O-line gives the Qb extra time which in turn gives a reciever extra time to run a route easier, get deeper, timply give them more time to get open. more completions for our wide outs, more spreading of the field, more TDs, more wins. RB- Come to Curtis, yeah he's older, slower, less agile, more delicate, but definitley more smarter. You cant teach any rookie (Bush included) his knowledge of the game. No he wont be rushing for 100+ every single game like he used to but having that O-line will open up holes for him to go into, turning a 2nd and 8 into a 2nd and 6, and we all know what 2 yards can do as far as play calling. It opens up the run game which in turn opens up the pass game, spreading out the field more. Yes there were alot of great players in the draft, one of the better drafts as of lately as far as pure talent, drama, and trades (which good or bad is always fun). Sure we didnt get Bush when we could have, same with about 4 other players. Now ponder this. Say we didnt draft D'Brick and got Leinart instead. Sure he might be a great QB one day, shit he might flop in his first pre-season game, it's a gamble. but if we would have drafted him he simply wouldnt have the protection he needs as a rookie to develop into a great QB. We were seeting ourselves up for failure in the near future with drafting him. Give the new line a shot before you go crazy. Plus another thing alot of poeple overlook. Bollinger, our 3rd string QB. Yeah hes a 3rd stringer, but he actually handled himself on the field. He got served a shit sandwhich and ate it and kept trucking. In my eyes he proved to me that he MIGHT have something. No O-line Curties hurt and our WR sucking and the kid still managed to lead the team (not to more then 1 win but on the field he did grab the bull by the horns)
the only thing i'm dissapointed in was the fact we haven't addressed the dline at all. I like the fact that we drafted Smith and Washington late
Good post and to allude to another point, high character players such as the ones the Jets have been after the last few seasons dont mail in the season because the going gets tough or adverse situations arise such as the qb's going down like skittles last season. They could have given up like a lot of our so called fans when Justin Miller ran in that td against Buffalo and nearly caused a riot on here. Character players dont stop playing like some of your superstars like Owens who will start bitching when things go awry. Sure we may not have that glamour player but when Leinart is more interested in getting photographed with Paris Hilton rather than be your qb then you just may be glad they picked D'Brickashaw.
Ah Ha ba-zing score one for the jokester. Maybe we can get him to slap around Dwayne into becoming the first round draft pick we were hoping he'd turn out to be.
Well, I was just thinking about that-- not very high in all honesty, but not as low as I am on these picks. However, I liked plenty of other guys we took late who ended up pretty good. A Jones, Cotchery, R Washington, D McClover, Derrick Ward, Kerry Rhodes, and Joel Dressen. Those were all good late picks, and I actually liked some of them before the draft. Those 3 picks I listed from this year were all big time reaches though. Eric Smith over Gabe Watson is just not a good pick.
If you watch the Mangold clip then you'll see our new center schooling Watson and Mangold is supposed to be undersized. Besides Watson was benched by Michigan for being lazy.
Schlegal looks like a rotation player in the 3-4 and special teams monster. Eric Smith could be our new strong safety because Coleman and Rhodes are essentually Free Safeties and Maddox was injured last year but again he'll be a special teams player. The tight end can block and may project as a full back. I'm not judging them straight away until i see them play.
I totally agree. Some picks like the Smith pick in the third round I was unsure of, but things such as getting an extra second next year, beefing up the o-line is what needed to be done. I actually think the Jets were targetting Clemens in round 2 which in my mind means we got an extra second and got our guy. This is going to be a process and which will occur over years, a little patience will go a long way
Im not saying he is going to be awesome but watching schlegal at ohio state I think he reminds Mangini of a Tedy Bruschi like player.
I think people miss he point that no team gets the star LT in the draft, then waste another first rounder on the OLine. That is just stupid. Then you add that to the run every other team in the draft was making on Db's and linebackers. Plus the fact you parted ways with your best pass rusher. Add that all together and you end up being in the third round looking for starters in your D with nothing but Starting OLinemen ................ with you already have. Hopefully next year will be better. And another thing, people keep talking like we have Belichicks left side of his brain an HC, when we could have nothing but his left shoe. It's a little too early to just be towing the company line, don't you think?????
I dont consider it taking the company line, I consider it waiting to see what develops and not calling my new FO a bust after day 2 of there first draft We arent exactly everyone else. Going into the draft we had a poor O-line. We did not already have a center when we took Mangold, unless you want to count Trey Teague old vet or unproven Norm Katnik. Its not stupid to take a guy like Mangold who was the best center prospect since LeCharles Bentley and was a dominant center in college. A leader on the Ohio State offense and a guy loved by his teammates. You call it a waste I call it building a mean nasty streak, and making it possible for us to focus on glamour/skill positions in furtue drafts and free agent signings to come. I dont look at what other teams are drafting to value my teams picks. I determine it on team need and value to our team
I don't think they should be trashed, but people talking about this being the grestest draft they have ever seen is a bit much. And I know the jets aren't everyone else, but don't make it seem like they are trailblazing by picking OLine in the first round. NObody does that..........ever, period. Why, because they do what we did with our first pick an get the all pro LT, then they move on to other needs. Why does every NFL team I've seen in my life do this???? Because after haveing that player in place by drafting or signing him, the lych pin of your line that you know can take that side and any Defender on it and neutral them, makes the other four OLine men better. SO you can piece the rest of the linetogther in later rounds and FA sigings. So instead of blowing picks on guys that probably would go undrafted because you don't like the players left at the other postions, you pick starting oline in the 3Round and get those LB's/DB's/RB's you want. It's not a bad draft, but it sure wasn't great. Just they way I feel.
Your entitled to the way you feel. Your right this wasnt an awesome draft, but im happy b/c it was a draft you can lay down a foundation for. I love Mangold and think he can be a top 5 center in a couple of years. Ferguson and Mangold may have been the 2 best O-linemen at the senoir bowl. I think your judgement is a little to critical, being that next year I feel that the extra #2 from the redskins can help us trade up to get a stud such as an Adrian Peterson. The 3rd round pissed me off a little bit but we knew that the Tangini combo was young and a little inexperienced, im willing to let them learn and grow and see what there intent was with the picks after round 1
The Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line is littered with day 1 draft picks. Barrett Brooks- 2nd round pick Alan Faneca- 1st round pick Jeff Hartings- 1st round pick Max Starks- 3rd round pick Marvel Smith- 2nd round pick Kendall Simmons- 1st round pick This team recently won a Super Bowl, did they not?
