Short-term we have to either resign or redo the contracts of: Washington, Edwards, Mangold, Ferguson and D. Harris in the upcoming year... how in the world will we be able to do that!? Right now they get (salary cap number): LW: about 0.5 mill a year BE: Around 4.5 mill a year NM: less then 2 mill a year DF: Averages 6 mill a year http://www.nyjetscap.com/dbrickashawferguson.html DH: less then 1 mill a year. All of these guys will want pretty big money IMO. If you consider guys like Revis, Scott and Sanchez already take up a lot of cap space I have no idea how we manage our cap situation. I'm happy we got Edwards in talent-wise but I'm afraid of his contractual demands... out of the players I talked about above there's no one I'd want to let go of just to have Edwards here. What do you guys think?
I see a few things that could be done... TJ i gone after this year, and we will probably not add a RB as expensive.(7,4m i 2010) DBrick is very heavy on the cap(7,2m), and reworking his contract might actually free some space. Two of the players taking up the most room is Faneca(8,5m) and Woody(5,6m). These are also two players, that have not been playing at there best this season. If they are over the hill, maybe it is time to trade them, and get some quality youth in there. Ellis is also heavy(on the cap!) and that might be worth a thought. I dont know what we could get in FA and the draft to replace these guys, but they are not getting better, and maybe it is time to make some moves.
the uncapped year could help big time, but if a new cap is in place its going to make things wierd. we sure are going to lose players to FA. its a matter of replacing them. Its not easy, but it has to be done.
even if they get a new cap in place, I expect it to be a lot higher than this year. And when Faneca and Woody signed, it was pretty clear, that those contracts will be reworked after 2-3 years.
I think they need to rework Faneca and Woody's deals soon to free up money for other guys. Of course that is all contingent on them actually being willing to do so. EDIT: ^ I see GJF mentioned this as well.
Thomas Jones will be cut. $5.9M off the books. Greene will replace him and Washington will be compensated. Probably a $2-$4M number next year. Shawn Ellis will be cut and resigned. D'Brick will be resigned with a lower cap number. He isn't getting big money. He knows that. I think with Jones, another casualty you'll see is Damien Woody. He'll be another $4M off the books. A huge key to this is Revis. Revis makes $7.5M this year against the cap. Next year it will only be $1.9M. That's another $5.5M off the books. I know we (Jets Fans) spend our off seasons worrying about Cap Space, but Tanny is a cap god. He knows his shit. We'll be fine. ***Faneca's money is pretty much guaranteed. He isn't going to be fucked with.
agreed with everything, and thats why i hated the Faneca deal when it happened and i still hate it. I said it last offseason it was a terrible deal for a guy who likely will only have one or maybe (that was a big maybe) 2 more years at an elite level and we gave him one of the highest paying contracts in OL history. We needed an upgrade at LG no one could question that, but he has waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay underperformed his contract, he gave up the most sacks on our OL last year (7.5 if memory serves) and this year his performance leaves a lot to be desired.... and of course we are stuck with the guy being payed that much through at least next year before we can even touch that deal...
the uncapped year? or that we wouldnt have to worry... My guess is the new CBA is not completed so this year becomes uncapped. This would be fantastic for 2 reasons, it gives us the ability to massively frontload deals to resign guys so they get their money over the life of the deal, but they earn the big chunks early so when the cap is reinstated nobody has ballooned 10+ million dollar numbers if we can avoid it. Oh we also can cut guys without dealing with cap penalties. So it would allow us to get out of Gholstons contract, and Damien Woody's and hopefully get us a way to restructure with Faneca because he is playing like crap compared to what we are paying him.
I would assume they could front load deals next year to get all the big money off the cap for the following year?
if Brick thinks hes worth big money he can play elsewhere. and at this rate Faneca needs to re-work his contract. Mangold, Washington, and Harris are the must keeps in my mind. and if Edwards shows promise you obviously work something out. then again I think next year is uncapped so this prolly means nothing.
Maybe if we do turn out a great year our guys will be willing to play here for a discount. This is NY after all maybe they can work some deals out for some adverts and stuff like that to supplement their income. I'm hoping for a much higher salary cap though, if any.
i think we go uncapped for next year and it comes back in 11' with a shortened preseason, a rookie cap, and a increased salary cap. i really want them to work it out cuz i dont want football to become......*shudders* baseball. bleh. anyways, as much as we hope the NFLPA can come to an agreement all we constantly here is they JUST now started preliminary talks and its highly unlikely something gets hammered out for next yr.
Mangold and Harris are the 2 that we really cant afford to let go. Then Brick and Leon, but theres no way they can give Braylon Edwards a contract before these 4. It just doesnt make any sense. Its gonna piss off the entire locker room if these 4 guys who have been with the team their entire careers arent resigned before Braylon.
Not true. No ceiling as far as the salary cap is concerned also means no floor. Not everyone is going to be throwing around money like Daniel Snyder and Jerry Jones, which means the potential for a rather large group of veterans who actually see their contracts decrease in an uncapped year. Couple that with the potential for a lockout in 2011 and I'd argue that labor and ownership would be quite willing to negotiate a new cap.
