Thanks for the article, kelly. Sloppy Jets must 'stop giving games away' Bill Eichenberger Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 - 10:57 p.m. ET EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. ? The frustration was palpable in the New York Jets' locker room after Sunday's 30-25 loss to the Miami Dolphins that denied them a payback victory and evened their record at 4-4 heading into a bye week. "We were flying high, and a lot of things happened these last couple of weeks," Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis said. The latest example of their misfortune: The Jets more than tripled the Dolphins in total offense, amassing a 378-to-104 edge in yardage but still lost for the fourth time in their past five games. "I truly feel that our football team is good enough to beat anybody in this league," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. "But we also can lose to anybody if we spot a team three touchdowns." What happened against the Dolphins was both typical and atypical of this team, which right tackle Damien Woody admits is "average right now." All is not lost, however. The running game has flourished, rolling up more than 300 yards in back-to-back games before getting 127 Sunday. Rookie quarterback Mark Sanchez has not turned the ball over the past two games after throwing 10 interceptions in the first six games. And the defense has begun to pressure quarterbacks, sacking Miami's Chad Henne six times Sunday, and was coming off a shutout victory over the Raiders. But after a loss, the focus understandably was on what has gone wrong: 1. Sloppy execution "If you want to be an elite football team, you have to be consistent in all phases," Woody said. "And that's what we're lacking." Sunday's loss to the Dolphins, their second in 20 days to their AFC East rival, is a good example. A breakdown in special teams allowed two kick returns for touchdowns. A Jets fumble was returned 48 yards for a touchdown. And the Jets' defense, which kept the Dolphins in check for most of the game, failed to stop them on a six-play, 81-yard drive in the fourth quarter for what proved to be the game-winning touchdown. 2. Too many penalties Penalties at key moments hurt the Jets on Sunday. An illegal shift negated a successful two-point conversion, and a 12-men-on-the-field penalty on the defense gave the Dolphins a second-and-goal at the 5 on their final scoring drive. "A lot of it has been our mistakes," defensive end Shaun Ellis said. "You look at it. We just have to play mistake-free football and stop giving games away. The Buffalo game, this game, the Saints game. We need to play hard but play smart." 3. Too much talk Ryan set a blustery and boisterous tone for this team since his introductory press conference in January. "But if we're going to talk the talk, we have to walk the walk," Jets outside linebacker Calvin Pace said. "I think everybody believes in the message Rex is preaching to us and the fans, but Rex doesn't play. "We have to go out, execute and win games." But if Ryan has his way, that might not change. "We've put ourselves in a hole here," he said. "But I've been down before. My back's been against the wall. But I'm going to come out punching and I believe our team will, too."
Sloppy play=penalties=losses. You look at our losses and besides the defensive meltdown against our 1rst game with Miami we really haven't been beat out of a game by an opponent. Interceptions, botched field goal, fumbles, whatever. We constantly spot the other team a TD or 2 or 3 and then we shoot ourselves in the foot. Yet, we are in the game till the last play....thats whats more frustrating than anything else.
