just curious. in terms of looking to te future, is this a defense we can count on to be around for many years. my gut reaction is yes, but im not 100% sure
Your gut reaction is wrong. Our defensive line needs to be revamped. Our secondary is fairly young, and we're set at inside linebacker for a while...but that's about it. We need depth all over the place. BTW - it's not hard to CAPITALIZE certain words.
No. The defensive line is over 30 (including Sione Pouha) and the linebackers, with the exception of Harris and Gholston are all there or nearly so also. This defense needs major reinforcements in the front 7 over the next few years. The Steelers would consider at least 5 of the 7 as near term players to release and replace through the draft.
I'd say the front 7 needs depth but the defense is still fairly young. Scott is 30 so is Thomas but pace and Harris are still pretty young. The line needs a ton of work tho
The Steelers let Joey Porter go when he hit 30. They let Jason Gildon go when he hit 31. They let Clark Haggans go when he was 30. They let Alan Faneca get away when he was 31. They have agressively allowed their roster to turn over so they could get young blood in to revitalize the trenches. They've won 2 Super Bowls in the last 4 years while letting All-Pros who were aging out go. That's what you do if you're a good team. Look what the Pats did this year. They basically said fuck you to every key player on their defense that was over 30 and they're just cruising along developing the guys who will now man the trenches for them for the next 7 years. It's just gross watching the Jets so out-classed as an organization because even with a decade of watching other, better teams and how they operate we're still trying to be the Redskins.
You do know when you play madden and crush the jets, that only counts on the video game franchise right?
I fear that Tannenbaum's selling out of our drafts is going to come back to bite us in the ass big time in the not so distant future. Great teams are built through the draft, not through Free Agency. We're using trades and Free Agency in place of the draft. The draft is like an after thought for our team. Neglecting the draft is what leads, inevitably, to "rebuilding years". Which is a total BS term, which basically means that your GM doesn't know what he's doing.
Or....now that were pretty much set at every position we start trading back and acquiring depth. Also in fa insted of signing top fas we start signing depth players
The steelers also got lucky that James Harrison turned out to be a beast, that's why it was easy to let porter go, but porter was still a good player even after he left. Letting Faneca go looks good because they won a superbowl, but quite frankly they won despite their o-line. The pats are a bad example. They had to let players like bruschi and vrable go because they were done and yet they still haven't gotten reinforcements in at every position. Yeah Mayo and merriweather are good, but their corners are okay. Butler looks good, but what about wheatley and crable as well as some of their other later picks. The jets defense is definitely better then the pats and its significant. People complain so much about not having draft picks and trading them, but if you want to look at the opposite strategy with the Pats they haven't hit on many picks after the first round if any at all in recent years. Look at what the Jets have done with the trades they have made. 2007 - trade up for Revis and Harris. two pro bowlers 2008- 3rd and fifth for Jenkins - all pro player maybe the best DT in football 2008- trade up for dustin keller- slow start this year, but i think we all agree he is going to be good and has shown it in spurts 2009- Lito sheppard for a fifth - this looks like a bust, but for a fifth i'll take the risk. I don't think we give up anything more since we aren't signing him and he hasn't played. Trade up for sanchez and trade for braylon People want to complain about free agency, but the jets got calvin pace, tony richardson, faneca, and woody in 08 and scott douglas and leonhard in 09. Only faneca is the guy I would say who is truly overpaid, but his run blocking and his influence on mangold and ferguson have made him a player that was at least worth something. To say that the jets are the redskins is so wrong. What has made the steelers and pats great is that they went through a period where they hit on their draft picks most notably in the first round. I don't care how many or how little draft picks you have you have to hit on them and scout well and that's something tanny and the scouting department have done very well, with the exception of gholston (hey not everyone gets every pick right). The jets actually spend and get players who produce. Back to the original thread, our defense is old in the trenches. This is a real good year for DTs and with Jenkins going down I think that is where the jets will go in the draft.
Luck?! We pounded you to the ground on Monday night and then we let Ginn work his magic yesterday. If there is any team that is lucky I would think the jets have been very lucky to have even won 4 games this year. You guys LOST TO THE BILLS!!
pounded us to the ground? look i'm all for intelligent debate, but you're forgetting that if it wasn't for a last second touchdown you would've lost that game. that's hardly a pounding. and you let ginn work his magic? is that the same magic that got him replaced as the starting wideout? he's fast, yes. that's all he's got. again, hardly a pounding.
DEFENSE NT: Jenkins 30, Pouha 30, Green 30 DL: Ellis 32, Douglas 32, DeVito 25, Pitoitua 24 Age-wise this is clearly the most liable part of the team. Although we have good talent and a frequent rotation is keeping everyone fresh I feel we will bring someone in from the draft and say goodbye to at least one of the old guys. OLB: Pace 29, Thomas 30, Gholston 23, Murrell 24 ILB: Scott 29, Harris 25, Westerman 24, Izzo 35, Fowler 27 3/4 of our starters are nearing the 30ies and this is a position in which speed and explosivness really counts, especially at OLB. But I'm guessing until we have Gholston no one will be brought in (considered Westerman versatilty). I don't think Izzo will play past this year but then again he's just a ST. CB: Revis 24, Sheppard 28, Strickland 29, Lowery 23, Coleman 27, Carroll 26, Cole 26 S: Rhodes 27, Leonhard 27, Smith 26, Ihedigbo 26 All Young, all good that's how old it is... in case you want to look at the rest of the team: http://forums.theganggreen.com/showthread.php?t=49523
Bite us in the ass? Which pick giveaway will bite us? The Revis one? Harris? Sanchez? Edwards? Keller? Shonn Greene? Jenkins? Which one are you referring to? Oh yeah, the Gholston one...the one we actually kept.
If we go DL in the first 2 rds this year (very probable, if we decide to stick with Woody) and assuming these young bucks take the place of two oldies (Greene and Ellis/Douglas) the situation will be: - Jenkins (31) will be spelled frequently with the new nose tackle (1st rd) we get & Pouha. - Ellis (33) and Douglas (33) will rotate for one spot with the other DE spot in the hands of our new rookie (2nd rd). DeVito and again Pouha will fill in while Pitoitua gets another year to grow. So that means that out of the 8 DL on the team next year (assumption) Jenkins, Pouha, Ellis and Douglas will be over 30. Jenkins will rotate with a rookie, Ellis and Douglas will rotate with themselves and Pouha will fill in when needed on running plays (plus he doesn't have a lot of mileage on). Overall it's not a bad position to be in... of course assuming we actually go NT and DE in the draft. PS to answer Mr. E I think we actually have pretty good backups, it's the talent of some of the starters I'm not that happy about (Thomas).
