We've been in a similar situation a few times this season and both sides have blown it. I would like a 2 score lead late in the game in order to feel comfortable. There hasn't been many last drive offensive victories for the Jets in the last 8 years or so.
I've been married, had kids, divorced, engaged, no matter what Beer has been there through all of it. I love Beer.
Beer, definitely. Is it bad that I refer to all alcohol as "pain go bye-bye" juice? How about the fact that I'm taking shots of Tequila at 3:00pm on a Tuesday?
great post. I couldn't agree more. I still think I'd have to take the lead and see what happens with our number 1 pass D but I feel exactly the same way.
to quote the great homer j simpson:"alcohol, the cause of and cure to most of life's problems" and of course you want the lead.i don't care if you have the worst d in the league you always want to have a lead in any situation
You're not the first person to have said this. You'd want the lead if the opponent is down 2, with 1st and goal from inside your 5 with a minute left? I'd rather have the ball.
Considering our defense stops our opposition scoring roughly 3 out of every 4 drives* you have to go with the odds. *disclaimer. Rough guess based on average score against the Jets this year of 16 points (3-4 scores) and amount of total drives per game for oppositions something like 12-15. Not accounting for the extra use of timeouts in the final drive scenario.
the main internal conflict I have is that I've seen to many "bend-don't-break" defensive efforts in the past. If the OP's scenarios had been up/down by 6 instead, I think the answer would be much clearer in favor of the defense. But all it takes is 1 or 2 great plays by the other offense, or a single miscue on defense to put the other team in FG range. Similarly, how many times have we seen the Jets need a TD to win, and we drive all the way down to the 10~15 yard line and just can't punch it in? But even as sketchy as our O has been, I think we could make it into Feely's range given 3 minutes and 3 timeouts. I guess I still agree with my original assessment, where my head says trust the D but my heart says take the ball, but again, I sure wish the OP had said 6 points so I could sleep better at night
