Holmgren is in Cleveland talking to the Browns about their open FO personell job not Head Coach. Possibly using the Browns as leverage to go back to Seattle as their GM.
he would certainly be an upgrade for the Browns. But you're probably right....probably playing the "leverage" game. I can't see him wanting to inherit that mess.
Mike Holmgren Reportedly Visiting Cleveland 12/15/2009 9:35 AM ET By Michael David Smith http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2009/12/15/mike-holmgren-visiting-cleveland/ Former Packers and Seahawks head coach Mike Holmgren is in Cleveland visiting with the Browns and discussing taking over the team's football operations. Pat McManamon of the Akron Beacon Journal is reporting that Holmgren spent Monday afternoon and evening in Cleveland meeting with the Browns and will spend Tuesday at the team's headquarters as well. Browns owner Randy Lerner wants to hire a "football czar" -- someone who will oversee all the team's coaches, players and everyone else associated with the on-field operations of the football team. And Holmgren, who won a Super Bowl as the Packers' coach and got to one with the Seahawks, is apparently his top choice. Holmgren is spending the 2009 season at home with his family, but he has acknowledged that he wants to get back in the game, and he is widely expected to become a team executive somewhere in 2010. The only question is which team will acquire his services: The Seahawks are believed to want him to come back to Seattle, but Cleveland will apparently make an aggressive offer for him as well, and other teams are likely interested. One way or another, in early 2010 Holmgren will be running some NFL team. The fact that he's in Cleveland makes it clear that the Browns are a strong candidate. ********************************************************* Looks like Seattle wants him back. If he goes to Cleveland, I think Mangini's days are numbered.
It would be a pretty good move if they can sign him (providing there is real interest on his part). They'd get a guy with great experience in the league, and sort of an overseeing mentor for Mangini. Not sure how Mangini would feel about it, or how much Holmgren would micro-manage (if at all), but it could be a good thing for everyone there. It's working for the Dolphins and I had my reservations about that at first.
I thought Gruden had just signed a contract. Not that I would be against getting him out of the booth.
I was thinking about polling for the over/under on number of hours after the final Cleveland game until the Mangenius firing was announced if this hiring goes through. Any speculation? I take 2.
If the Browns get Holmgren and Gruden I have a new team to root for outside of the Jets. I love both those guys.
Gruden I see, but Mooch, Zorn, Skeletor, and Mornhinweg? Those are some awful looking scraps...........
They were talking about this on NFL radio today. No Gruden because of his MNF contract and his son is in high school and does not want to move his family around, or something.
Gruden signed a contract extension with MNF that states he won't accept a coaching job. He's locked up.
Dunno about that. Speculation going around that..... http://nfl.fanhouse.com/2009/12/17/redskins-add-bruce-allen-jon-gruden-speculation-next/
...and that's why my money's on Gruden. Mangini built the defense, now Chucky can build the O. Personally, I think he'll crash and burn because he's a monumental douche who can't mentor young guys, especially a QB, to save his life. Kinda like a rich man's Herm. In this day and age, contracts don't mean shit. Besides, it's not like he's trying to get out of an NFL contract. I'm not sure he'd actually take the job, who in his right mind would? And Bruce Allen turned the Bucs into the losers they are today.
Not sure where they got it,but this is from Rotoworld. http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/player_main.aspx?sport=NFL&id=2566 Browns named ex-Seahawks and Packers head coach Mike Holmgren their new club president. Holmgren, who coached three Super Bowl teams, is the Browns' new head of football operations. The 61-year-old is expected bring in a new head coach, likely from his own coaching tree, to replace Eric Mangini. Holmgren was largely unsuccessful when given GM duties at the start of his time in Seattle, so it's fair to question the move. But perhaps he'll be able to make it work without coaching responsibilities on top of evaluating personnel.
I think he will do a good job, just look at the lack of talent he brought to Seattle as GM/HC. It's hard enough to be a HC, I can't imagine having to evaluate personnel also. By focusing on just one aspect of the game will allow him to excel, I see the Browns becoming relevant in 2 years.
