I will say this...except for the duck he threw up to Edwards (the comeback pass not the end zone pass..which was brilliantly thrown and should have been a touchdown) his accuracy..albeit short passes, was terrific against the Bengals. He was dead on with the slant passes and a few outs he threw were great passes. I have no doubt that this kid is going to be a dead on accurate qb. He has shown that many times this year. His main problem is what to do with the safety...that will come.
What happened with Sanchez this year is pretty simple: he was asked to do too much in a bunch of games where the Jets had no business asking him to do that. In New Orleans the Saints offense was malfunctioning for most of the day. The simple answer would have been to run the ball and kick field goals if we had to. Giving the Saints 14 points off of our passing game was what lost that game for us. We weren't desperately behind until we put ourselves in that situation. In Buffalo the Bills offense was completely non-functional and we ran at will on them. Then for some godforsaken reason that nobody is ever going to be able to justify the Jets got pass happy in the second half and essentially handed the Bills a win. Against Jacksonville the Jets passed the ball 15 times in the first half against 11 runs and were down 21-13 at the half. The big difference? The TD the Jaguars got 5 minutes into the game after Sanchez threw a pick on the first play of the game. The Jaguars, BTW, were a middle of the pack run defense - nothing special there at all. Against New England the Jets passed the ball 5 times in the first 8 plays and the 5th pass got intercepted for a pick-6. The score was 0-0 when the Jets gameplan failed and they were never close again after that. The later interceptions sealed the deal but it was the first one that lost the game and the Jets had no business playing that loose with a rookie QB against Bill Belichik. Against Atlanta the Jets passed the ball 34 times and ran it 33 times and then were shocked to discover that when they relied on Sanchez to throw the ball downfield against the 20th ranked run defense they got beat. That's 5 games the Jets lost because Schotty could not come to grips at all with the fact that he actually HAD a rookie QB to protect and a great running game to do it with. He talked about that a lot but based on what actually transpired this season he really didn't get it at all. The Jets are 11-5 or maybe even 12-4 with Paul Hackett as the OC this year. That's the tragedy of this season. Sanchez probably has 14 TD's and 14 Int's and everybody looking at him differently if he was not asked to do more than he could do as a rookie.
Yeah, well I ain't gonna jinx this but I'm sure as a Jet fan you recall a few certain high motor guys blow it at the end. Come on man it's only ten bucks. Higher stakes maybe?
let him throw it when he 'wants to' and not just when he 'needs to'. throwing on 1st down for 7 or 8 yards is a whole lot easier than wating until 3rd and 8 and facing a blitz. mark could play catch with keller on 1st down all game long. let him get his yards when they're easy to get
this ... its like he sees a new wrinkle in a d and then he has a complete brain fart and forgets that he can check down or throw out of bounds hopefully hes over that now, for the most part
After we ran all over Cincy last week I don't see why we wouldn't come out favoring the run on Saturday again. I thought the Jones/Greene 1-2 punch was used to it's best effect so far last week. With Smith lining up more often under center as well hopefully we don't need to see Sanchez put into too many passing situations.
I would like to see him throw a couple of deep balls as well. Of course, it would help if Edwards did not act as if he were just given an AP calculus question when the ball is in the air.
Looks like it may be cold and windy, possibly snowing, not sure there is going to be all that much pass action anyway.. Keep it on the ground...
The offense was not running on "all cylinders" early in the year, the running game was struggling. Perhaps you forgot all the Jones hate early in the year. As the year progressed, the running game improved, thus no need for Sanchez to throw alot.
In addition to the fact that not enough energy was being expended to make the running game great there was also the fact the Sanchez had about 5 Int's dropped by the opposition in the first 3 games of the year. We were looking at what he was doing right, which was definitely there, and not seeing the things he was doing wrong at the same time.
Passing < 20 times a game might get us past the Bengals, but no way against the Colts or Chargers. The pass offense is going to have to start making plays, more than just a few times a game. For the record, I think it's possible. Sanchez has looked really good the last few games.
I agree, being at Sunday's game, Sanchez's passes were (because of the wind) surprisingly accurate....Edwards should have caught 2 passes in the 1st half....
Great post. I agree 100%. I can't understand why it took Schotty 14 weeks to figure out that the way to win games and develop a rookie QB is to rely on the run and a very good defense and win games playing smashmouth football. I guess that kind of game plan didn't make Schotty look creative enough.
As much as we run the ball, we should be running a lot more play action passes. Sanchez at times, looks like a wizard with his play actions, other time he is obvious and doesn't fool a soul. Another thing for him to work on this off season.
agreed. They did make mention of the end zone pass to Edwards and him leaping too early...but that was a great pass..no chance for interception. The wind too.
TOP will be the key to this football game. Keep the chains moving, keep the clock running, and keep the Bengals O off the field.
No. If we are gonna win this game Sanchez needs to learn to throw. The Bengals are gonna be expecting the run and the wildcat. Our defense can't shut them out, and our franchise QB needs to throw for more than 63 passing yards if we want to win this game.
I agree, but guess what, the first bad pass or incomplete he throws on 1st down will have Jets fans running after Shotty with a pitchfork. Going completly run based against a good Bengals run D ( not the D we saw Sunday night) may set us up for a long day. Let's hope Rex/Shotty realize this and gameplan accordingly.
Guys its really simple: Run the ball down their throats. That is our strength. If they put 9 in the box to stop the run we need to check down and execute the slant passes and play action passes.
