    it's worth a shot. A bad punt or a good return (or both) and you have a chance to get into FG range.

    Force the Vikings to make the play.

    Usually, like today, it doesn't help you at all, but the reward is higher than the risk.

    Oh, and you can also go after the punt and try to get a block, again forcing the pounting team to execute.
