Boring time for us Jets fans so i figured i'd throw it out there and see what you guy's think.
If we want to shore up the WR spot on the cheaper side of FA what about Kevin Walter?
The kids a big target who had a couple of decent years in Houston plus he's young and could stick around for awhile.
    I'm not a 100% on this but i think he's an UFA.

    Thoughts?

Wouldn't be such a bad idea. Walter has been consistent in Houston, but I'd rather have a true 3rd down receiver, and he was rarely utilized on 3rd down.

UFA cannot be signed until the Jet's lose someone. Will get a contract the Jet's can't compete with.

If we could grab him I'd do it. That would mean Edwards, Cotch and Walter. Not bad at all. But like gsulli said he will most likely get an offer we cannot match.

Kevin Walters cap value was close to 2 million dollars last year and his base salary was over 1.5million.

    We cant get him

Ironically, it's easier for us to sign an RFA than a UFA.

Scarily enough it would be Freddy Mitchell.

Most of his catches were for first downs in his career. Cotch is a possession guy.

A true 3rd down WR doesn't exist, its a non-phrase. No WR can be the automatic answer on 3rd down.

I can't help but think there are ways around this final 8 rule in some way making it possible for teams to sign these players.
I'm thinking if there is a loophole ole Tanny will find it out.

Even if you guys were do get him, I wonder if he benefits from Matt Schaub throwing to him. Would he still be just as good with Sophomore Sanchez - who I think will be good, but not as good as Schaub...yet anyway. Walter is a good WR though, he would definitely improve the team - of course if y'all can't get him it's all moot innit?

I second that. I don't think we'd be able to sign him. I just don't see us losing a FA that would get a multi million dollar deal. Kevin will demand probably around $4+ mil a yr deal and we are not losing any one with that salary.

final 4 rule. And no, there are no loopholes besides trades. It would have been documented by now.

Kevin Walter has been a #1 and #2 receiver during his time with Houston. We already have a #2 receiver in Cotchery, what the Jets need is a Slot receiver like Lance Moore.

Dont get me wrong Walter is one of the most underatted wide outs in the game right now, I just dont think the Jets should go after him. Walter is also much older then people think, he will be 29 August 4th. He will also ask for a much higher price than his 1.3 Million which he made last year.

I know this would be further down in the draft, but one WR that impresses me is Jordan Shipley from Texas. No, he's not big but the dude has great hands and can fly. He could possibly be the slot receiver we need.

Kevin Walter was the #2 receiver on the best passing offense in the NFL, he would not go to a running team as a #3 receiver.

I would love to have him, but it is not happening.
