the jets must lock up feely....it is NOT easy to find a kicker capable of kicking in the winds of the new stadium as he did in "giants" stadium. he is important to this team and anybody thinking ehh he's just a kicker is insane... he is reliable, he's a team leader, and as the article states he even punted last second in a freakin playoff game and did well....
1 for 3 in the AFC Championship game. As much as I didn't care for Mike Nugent, he was just as reliable as Feely's been. Certain kickers are replaceable - Feely is one of the guys. He's a kicker, no one on the team gives a shit about what he has to say.
I don't think Feely is as valuable as some have made him out to be. That being said holy shit we can't replace him with NICK FOLK. The guy couldn't buy a field goal last year.
I said something along those lines back when we cut Nuge and got ripped apart. People love to hate the guy, but Feely really isn't much better.
Nick Folk also went 20-22 in 2008. His confidence took a hit because Jerry Jones called him out publicly.
No, he's not. People forget that if Nugent didn't get injured a couple years ago, Feely wouldn't even be a Jet. It kind of sucks that he lost his job due to injury.
Nugent wasn't exactly lighting up the kicker highlights before he was injured. The guy missed chip shots, missed extra points, couldn't kick the fucking ball deeper than the 5 yard line on KOs, got injured, and then played his way off of the 2009 Tampa Bay Buccaneers by going 2 for 6. How horrible do you have to be at your job to lose it on the 3rd shittiest team in the league? Nugent was playing his way off of the Jets just fine. If Nugent was still a Jet despite the injury, I would have been pissed off.
FYP............... Yeah Kickers are replaceable, very replaceable. Feely was spotty at times last year and cost the Jets 1 game for sure. That being said...... In general he has been very reliable. He is a team leader and like it or not leads by example. He makes tackles and I think adds to the swagger that Rex has brought to the team. Feely would still be a Dolphin if he didn't beak off in the press. I suppose that is something that will not change. Make no mistake I would not be broken up about him not being on the team. However I think the Jets are better with Feely than with Folk.
When I saw this thread I was kinda hoping it was Feely doing this for real.
The last 2 seasons it been great to not have my heart in my mouth every time the kicker walks onto the field, It sounds like the FO will get him back.
I'm not trying to defend the guy or anything, but he was 29-36 the season before he was injured. Nugent attempted only one field goal (he missed) in the season he was injured. Feely ended up going 24-28 that season. Jay Feely was 30-36 this season. My point was there isn't much of a difference between the two. People hate on Nugent all the time because we spent a high draft pick on him. I agree that it was a mega reach, and a horrible draft decision, but he wasn't a bad kicker. He was mediocre...just like Jay Feely. A lot of people consider Neil Rackers to be one of the better kickers in this league, and I think he is too...but he's inconsistent at times. Nick Folk has been in this league three seasons, and has been damn for two of them. I want to see what this guy can do with a change of scenery. Nate Kaeding might be one of the better REGULAR season kickers in the game. He sucks complete balls in the playoffs, and that's all that matters. You have to find a clutch kicker, and that's one of the hardest kinds of players to find.
Feely was pretty reliable, and frankly, I do worry about Folk. He used to be good, but sometimes kickers can just lose it mentally... can he snap out of it? If he can, he'll be better than Feely, but the question remains, are the molecules in his head re-aligned yet?
6 misses: 1 vs BUF - 44y Wide Left, iirc this was a hurried kick as time expired in the first half. 1 @ OAK - 38y Wide Right - bad miss, but we were up 31-0 at the time. 1 vs CAR - 48y Wide Right - bad miss in Q1, long kick. 1 @ TB - 49y Wide Right - long kick, game was in the bag thanks to 4 made kicks earlier. 2 vs ATL - 38y Wide Right - on halftime, possible bad snap/hold, should have got this - worst kick of season. - 37y BLOCKED - again a bad snap/hold, iirc. Tough conditions also. We won three of those games, the Buffalo kick was in adverse conditions, so it's only really the Atlanta game where Feely cost us during the regular season. Even then it was a complete meltdown by the FG unit, not just his fault. Nugent 2007: 7 misses 1 @ BAL - 52y Wide Left - tough kick in a close loss. 1 @ BUF - 37y Hit Upright - Bad miss in a close game. Final play of scoreless first half. Jets go on to lose. 1 @ NYG - 42y Wide Left - Would have given Jets lead in a game they eventually lost. 1 vs PHI - 44y Wide Right - Would have brought us within 1 point in a game we eventually lost by 1 score. 1 vs WAS - 54y Short - Kick as time expired in 1st half was long. Jets lost game in OT. 1 @ NE - 35y Wide Left - Would have brought Jets within one score ahead of 2 min warning. 1 @ TEN - 51y Wide Left - Kick as 1st half ended would have put Jets ahead in game ultimately lost by a narrow margin. I think Nugent is less fondly remembered because we lost every one of those games. He was 11/11 in our 4 wins that season.
I'm on board with this ... Feely may have missed a few kicks this year but let's not forget that 3 of them in that Atlanta game were due to a shit job between the snapper and the holder. The bottom line is the guy may not have the strongest leg but didn't he make like 24 consecutive kicks? He knows how to kick in NY and was certainly a valuable member of this team. You can spin Folk being a good kicker two years ago or even 3 years ago but Feely has been a much better lately and as far as kickers go I want the guy who was better recently.
Folk will produce....he's a young, strong kicker who spent last season coming off hip surgery. He was awesome for the Cowboys the first 2 years. I wouldn't be surprised if he made the Pro bowl again this year. Give him some support!
Folk is strong...and typically composed under pressure. He had a near perfect record for the Cowboys for 2 years. He had hip surgery and rushed into the season...Watch, he'll be a pro bowler again. Give the guy some support.
I may have started that TT thread about you a long time ago, but I actually agree with most of your posts and viewpoints regarding the Jets. Especially this one.
Feely has been much better than mediocre, he is the best K I have seen in a jets uniform. Nugent wasn't terrible but he wasn't good either. Jay missed 2 against Indy(though only one was really a bad miss) but the kick against SD to make it 7-3 was the biggest kick made by a jets kicker in years. He can kick in the clutch.
