Ramsey still on Jets' radar May take over for Pennington BY RALPH VACCHIANO / DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER Jets might add Redskins quarterback Patrick Ramsey should Chad Pennington refuse to take a pay cut. INDIANAPOLIS - Chad Pennington is the quarterback of the Jets for now, but the team already may have its eyes on his replacement. The Washington Redskins are shopping quarterback Patrick Ramsey, coach Joe Gibbs admitted yesterday, and the Jets apparently are one of the teams that already have called. That's hardly surprising since they also inquired about the 27-year-old backup during the season right after Pennington hurt his shoulder. At the time, the Redskins' price was too high. But their demands are almost certainly lower now that they're frantically trying to shed about $20 million to get under the projected salary cap by Thursday afternoon. They don't necessarily have to trade Ramsey to get there, but that's apparently part of their plans. In fact, they've given Ramsey's agent, Jimmy Sexton, permission to seek a deal, too. "It's something we're trying to gain information about and letting them talk and visit and seeing what situations may be out there," Gibbs said. "And we're doing the same thing. We'll see if there's a fit. It has to make sense for us and make sense for both sides." Ramsey, who made just one start and threw only 25passes last season, is scheduled to make $1.7 million in 2006, the final year of his contract, which is about $7 million less than Pennington is scheduled to make.Of course, the Jets still are negotiating with Pennington, who rejected their initial offer to slash his pay by $8 million. His agent, Tom Condon, and Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum were expected to meet here at the scouting combine yesterday to see if they could reach an agreement before Friday, when Pennington's $3 million roster bonus is due. If they can't, Pennington could be released, which would definitely put the Jets in the market for a veteran quarterback. They're also believed to be eyeing Vanderbilt quarterback Jay Cutler with the fourth pick in the draft.
I would give up a fourth for him, no more. Maybe a third for Ramsey and a fifth. He does offer starting QB experience and is still a pretty gritty competitor.
Ramsey? Ugh. He has done nothing during his career. I'd give a 5th for him, anything more would be a bad trade.
I always thought he looked like a good up and comer for the skins. I still don't think Brunnell is better, and believe Gibbs made a mistake there. Also brings past chemistry with Coles. I wouldn't want the Jets to give up too much to get him, but if he was to only cost a 4th, I'd say we made out pretty well
the 'skins have cap issues ( as we do ) , they may end up cutting ramsey & we might be able to sign him on the cheap.
im not sure ramsey in the long time answer but i would assume that he cant be worse than chad.. chad decision making sucked in the last couple of seasons.. he threw into double and triple coverage so many times as if hes a rookie.. ramsey wouldnt do any worse plus he can throw the ball farther than 20 yards with zip.. either way, we are rebuilding and almost any QB would be a stop gap QB so we should actually use this year to improve our RB and OL situation and solidify our defense to be top 5 when we are competitive in 3 years or so...
I'd rather draft Cutler instead of getting Ramsey. Ramsey has proven he can be a starting a QB, but hes not really a winner. Cutler has a lot of upside, you can't ignore that.
yes, drafting a QB wouldnt be a bad idea if and when we let the 64 million dollar cheerleader go.. but either way we arent going to be very good... i will start a thread on which position people think we should draft..
i agree considering ive seen some good stuff out of his.. he has decent accuracy, a pretty strong arm, and is young and willing to compete for the starting job..
I wouldn't mind bringing Ramsey in if Chad stays but if we do end up cutting Chad than i think we have no choice but to take a QB with #4. I DO NOT want to bring Ramsey here to make him an everyday starter.
This would be a huge mistake. I'd rather take a chance with Pennington or draft a QB. Ramsey has been a disappointment and is a free agent after 2006.
$#!t, I threw 25 less passes than Ramsey last season, and I'll play for 750K. I Can 3 Step Drop and float the ball 30 yards downfield too.
Agreed. What Gibbs did to him last year was really questionable and in the long run killed his trade value. Who in the NFL will deal anything for Ramsey? They will wind up cutting him and then we can sign him cheap as a stop gap. I believe he might even wind up better than that in the long run, a change of scenery should do wonders for him.
