One thing I don't get is how did Gholston repeatedly beat Jake Long (a 2 time pro bowler) in college and not be able to beat some of the average right tackles in this league?

    Gholston is Long's kryptonite.

That was the sound of his bicep crashing into his shoulder pad. Obviously....

Wow, he kinda looks like a football player in that play. Engages the tackle, uses his strength to shed the blocker, shows a bit of burst in his path to sack the QB.

Then again, he did it with his hand in the ground, which is where Gholston would probably play best. He just hasn't been able to cut it at OLB, playing in space where being able to change direction quick is necessary, and the Ghost don't have that. And on top of that, his only pass rush move is that type of bull rush seen in that video.

I don't see why they don't try to get him to put on some weight and try DE. He's obviously not cutting it as an OLB.

That was one hell of a hit! I remember that play. I do like the hustle to get the ball when he realized it was loose. Watching this, I can't believe how fast Gholston is. Maybe he looks faster because he's playing against the "B Squad", but damn... he's fast when he wants to be.

Therein lies the biggest problem with Vernon Gholston. There were questions about his desire to play the game when he was coming out of Ohio State, and his play, effort, and determination so far while playing in the NFL certainly have seemed to legitimize those concerns.

Although I still don't think he's agile enough to play linebacker, I think he has enough straight-line speed to play with his hand in the ground. However, there have been a great amount of plays where Gholston seemingly puts in no effort; these were the plays where we saw him with his hands on his hips after the pile has already formed lol.

Maybe if Gholston put in 100% on every single play instead of half-assing it all the time, we'd be able to better gauge just what type of player he can become.

He'll always be a 4-3 end nothing more. Shit he might not even be that great at that just average. I still have hope for him this year hoping he can be somewhat of a threat for our defense. Since his best move is a bullrush which relies on pure strength i dont see why we dont make him gain weight and try him at d end. I mean shit it looks as if he can pack 50 pounds of muscle on himself in the matter of a month i say we give it a shot and see what happens. It can't be much worse then this olb experiment. F#%* you Mangina.

I remember Rex saying at some point when he was still in Balt. they were looking at the Ghost before the draft. He stated that the biggest knock was that VG was totally inconsistent. He'd play like an All - Pro for 3 plays then you wouldnt see him again for another quarter.

Putting all the hate aside its really a shame. Think about all those guys out there that dont come close to having his athletic ability but bust their ass and get the job done anyway...a la Jimmy Leonard. If I was Leonard I would hate this guy even more than everyone else probably already does.

When Rex got here I thought he could at least make him decent but I dont think its going to happen. I just pictured Rex in practice telling Fancea to beat on this kid play after play until he finally snaps and starts to play like a lunatic

That would be great if he was a career for an UDFA but this is the 6th overall pick we're talking about here.

Let's hypothetical here like a mad man and say the Jets "reach" and draft Rodgers-Cromartie. We may have beaten the Colts with the other Cro. Or "reach" and draft Chris Johnson. Obviously hindsight is 20/20 but I know there were a lot of guys on here who loved Cromartie but couldn't justify drafting him with the 6th pick.

There were knocks on Gholston not being big enough (a la lineman big) to play defensive end in a 4-3 so maybe he's just screwed.

Most people thought that he'd be a better fit at 3-4 OLB than at 4-3 DE. I'd like to know what exactly Ryan's intentions are in keeping him. He's always said that he believes in brutal honesty so if the Ghost is a bust you'd think they would cut him sooner rather than later...

On a side note...the video also reminds me of how FUCKING terrible Carl Banks is as a TV/Radio guy. His voice and comments make my ears bleed.

I have only one hope for this kid - can he become a two-gapping DE? His highlight reels do suggest he can take that role, once he packs up 50+ pounds of muscle, as evidenced by his numerous arm tackling that stuck even in bad position/angle. If he can become a very good one, that solves a part of age problem on DL, so...

I thought Gholston was in a car accident then i remembered he made a play when it never mattered and teased us.
