FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets lost only two starters from the defense that lined up against the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game, and they added established players such as cornerback Antonio Cromartie and pass rusher Jason Taylor to a unit that led the NFL in several statistical categories. What could they possibly do for an encore? Bart Scott has something in mind -- something big. "You try to be the No. 1 defense -- ever," the veteran linebacker said matter-of-factly Thursday after practice. "Why not?" The Jets finished No. 1 in total defense last season, their first under Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. Adding Cromartie and Taylor, not to mention safety Brodney Pool and first-round cornerback Kyle Wilson, are "all cherries on top," Scott said. As Scott said, "You eat [the ice cream], you're full and it's like, 'Damn, I get a cherry, too?' " The former Ravens linebacker believed the 2006 Baltimore defense was good enough to be mentioned as the best in history -- it allowed a league-best 12.6 points per game -- but it lacked the validation of a Super Bowl title. "You have to win the Super Bowl to be considered the best," he said. Even though it's early, the Jets' collection of talent has made a strong impression on running back LaDainian Tomlinson, who was swallowed up by the Jets in last season's divisional playoffs. "This defense," he said, "is pretty scary." http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5226562 Another fluff article from Cimini.
All we can really expect right now is talk, and fluff articles. I love Bart Scott's interviews. I'm so psyched up for the season to start. *sigh*
I think we should bring Douglas back. He was solid for us last year and we're thin at DE. As for the article, good to know they have big expectations for themselves.
It doesn't seem like Douglas will be picked up by another team - so we can always pick him up in the middle of the season if we end up needing him, no?
I think Devito, now that he knows the defense, can fill in at least as well as Douglas - and he's younger. The best part about Douglas was that while he wasn't very consistent and didn't dominate, he could penetrate the backfield and disrupt the play. Devito does it, too, but is also inconsistent. It's possible that they bring MD back, but it's not going to make our defense any better, it will just make the line deeper.
I'm thinking the CS is very high on Ropati Pitoitua, who played well in rotational situations last year. DeVito, Ellis, Pitoitua, Rodrique Wright, and Gholston are our DEs, plus the TC fodder. I think bringing Douglas back into the mix would make the rotation a lot more competent.
which imho makes our defense a lot better for the last matches of the season, which is what really matters.
The minute Bart Scott signed he instantly became one of my favorite Jets. His attitude is perfect for NY and is just what Jet fans needed, him along with Rex was like a giant line being laid out for all Jet fans.
Yeah, the Jets really need more depth on the DL at this point. It hurt badly last year to have Ellis playing with a cast at the end. They need to have a big DE to back up Ellis on the strong side and it really wouldn't hurt to have a developmental guy on the other side also. Gholston isn't going to be able to stand up to what comes his way on first and second down in this defense. He's just not big enough. Really he's not big enough to play in a 3-4 at all unless he can play ROLB or RILB.
dont forget that we will also be seeing some formations with pouha at nt and jenkins at d-end and vice vera jenkins, pouha, ellis, devito, pitoitua, wright and gholston ... all of them wont even be active every sunday, i think we have underrated depth on the d-line excuse me while i re-fill my green kool-aid
" Jets' Scott has goal : best defense ever " ~ ~ ~ Jets' Scott has goal : best defense ever By Rich Cimini FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- The New York Jets owned the NFL's best defense last season. You can look it up in the stats. What could they possibly do for an encore? After all, what's better than the best ? Bart Scott has something in mind -- something big. "You try to be the No. 1 defense -- ever," the loquacious linebacker said Thursday without flinching. "Why not ?" In an offseason of splashy personnel moves and bold predictions, Scott's lofty goal ranks up there with some of Rex Ryan's most colorful sound bites -- and that's saying something. " It's pretty scary. ... It's like controlled havoc. " -- LaDainian Tomlinson, on the Jets' D No one is confusing the Jets with the 2000 Baltimore Ravens or the 1985 Chicago Bears, whose defense was coordinated by Ryan's father, Buddy, but Scott's ambition does have some merit. Consider: The Jets return nine starters from the top-ranked defense that lined up against the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship Game. They added to that foundation by trading for former San Diego Chargers cornerback Antonio Cromartie, signing former Miami Dolphins pass rusher Jason Taylor and drafting cornerback Kyle Wilson in the first round. Oh yes, nose tackle Kris Jenkins, limited to five games last season because of a knee injury, is expected back . . . rest of article : > http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/news/story?id=5226562
bart scott should concentrate on his offseason workouts and learning to keep his mouth shut. although this isnt the most out of control thing he should really wait until they do something before talking about being the greatest. although i like the fact that he is confident and what he said really isnt that bad i think he just annoys me with all his talk.
