Yeah, but after a pretty weak period for his position, he's turning out to be one of the best at what he does in the country.
Well, well, well. It's nice to see Rex and the defensive staff have moved the young man to a spot where he can succeed. This coaching staff really has a it's finger on the pulse of this team. They are consistently putting the players in spots where they are able to make plays. Lowery will do well in his new role. And for god's sake, let Pope beat out Coleman.
Coleman is still on the team?! :breakdance: Lowery will be depth for CB as well as Warren. Leonard, Pool, and Smith will be the main guys for the Safety position with Lowery playing the hybrid based on passing/running plays. Warren had a bad wheel and once he's healthy will have good speed for the CB position from a depth perspective, albeit not a starter. Warren will most likely be a PS player and get dressed for depth based on injury etc. Dig is a decent safety but he's an LB/ST player too. Only Coleman will be the odd man out. (finally)
Safety is where he should've been all along, but he is also a very good Nickel/Dimeback. I like Lowery so long as he isn't starting. He is one of those key reserves that teams need in order to have success when facing 3, 4 or 5 WR/TE sets.
unfortunately, i get the impression that coleman is the most liked DB on the team ... if its close i think theyll keep him
I can't wait until some actual football starts so we can stop with the articles about completely ordinary players looking AWESOME in camp. Lowery has showed very little in two years, and the Jets thought so highly of him that they (1) spent a first on a corner (2) traded for Cromartie, (3) added, but we're supposed to believe the Jets love him? Pouha is 31 and this is his sixth year in the league but he's going to break out now? Has a DL ever broken out at age 31 in the history of the league? I'm waiting for the off-season article saying "Player X has been completely pedestrian his whole career, and while he's working his ass off the bottom line is he looks completely ordinary this off-season as well." Or even "Player Z has a big reputation but really, he's lost a step, he's not picking up the offense, and he's playing like shit,"
I love this move. If not for his lack of top end speed, Lowery would most likely be a starter on this team. He's got excellent cover skills, I think he's going to kill at safety.
Last time I looked at a Jets Roster online his weight was about 200, if he lost close to what your saying ( 185 lbs) then I thought it'd get him into better shape and continue to get his speed up from that ankle injury to fit better at that 4th CB position if Lowery moves to Safety. Now IMO Lowery should STAY at 4 CB and Utilize his skills best in dime formations. Then when Poole Needs a rest or we run 3 safeties put him back there with Leonhard and Poole , so basically alternate him between positions. Then keep Warren at safety as a backup to Poole. And let Leonhard/ E. Smith fill in at Strong Safety.
I read an article from Cimini of all people yesterday with a Dennis Thurman interview, he said they were even working on 8 DB formations. That's the beauty of how Rex runs his defense - he allows his players to adjust pre-snap, and having guys like Lowery and Eric Smith and Ihedigbo who can shift to a different position for a defensive audible is a huge plus. I remember after the first Miami game in 2009 how Sparano remarked in his post game presser that the Jets were giving him a ton of looks which included 3-safety coverages. Think about it, now we have a 2 safety/LB hybrids and a safety/CB hybrid. That gives you a ton of flexibility of starters like Leonhard or Pool get nicked up.
8 DB formations hahaa. That sounds ridicoulus yet amazingly genious , I can see that being used one day on Peyton or Brady.
I was rewatching the Week 2 Jets - Pats game from last season the other night, and oh man, Lowery has a highlight reel. Brady freaks out several times yelling at his linemen and pointing at Lowery throughout the game. People flat out underestimate Dwight Lowery. He is an amazing nickel back and could be very good in a cover 2 scheme. Throwing him at safety is far from a terrible idea.
Hehheh I've been saying since the day he was drafted he was best suited to be a Safety in the NFL, and I've been a huge Lowery supporter since he was drafted.
