Only thing is, the S position is the most crowded right now. It'll be interesting to see Lowery this year. I'm sure he'll be seen a lot if he shows he can play Safety, because he can play corner on a pinch on any given play, but, it's still disheartening to see him relinquish the position without much fight.
Nickel, dime or starter, you can't be an effective cornerback if you don't have experience at each unique cornerback position. Wilson needs some first team reps to be an effective nickel or dime back and he won't get those when Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie are both practicing. Lowery knows this; it's that simple. I can understand why a lot of you are thinking "white flag," but Lowery has always been obsessed with improving himself. He's demonstrated an impeccable work ethic since he became a Jet. He's not just saying "I'm cool, I'll just chill," he's genuinely acting in the team's best interests. The guy may not be as talented as his teammates, but I think he's earned his reputation as a competitor.
It's taken out of context. Rex went on to say that Lowery is learning every DB spot, but the implication was that Wilson needed the reps at CB to get up to speed.
this, once you listen to the segment of Rex's PC where he mentions it, he explains it better. Lowery is learning all the DB spots, including both safeties, nickel and Dime cb, and he already has a good grasp of the starting cb role, he basically did it his first two years... so essentially lowery feels Wilson needs to reps in TC and preseason in order to make this defense as good as it can be.
... this is where the whole will he or won't he sign regarding the revis contract is impacting us now ... ... if revis is here, get k-dub as many reps in the slot as possible ... ... if revis isn't, the best option as #2 cb most likely is k-dub and he would need to get reps on the outside ... ... the fact that rex is still keeping him in the slot & put lowery at #2 cb would seem to indicate he's still holding out hope/belief that something will get worked out with revis and k-dub will be covering the slot guy ... ... if the season starts w/o revis we ARE better off with k-dub at #2 than with lowery at #2cb ... not giving the kid reps out there in camp is lessening the level of effectiveness he will start the season with ... l_j_r
I think it will work out either way. If Revis holds out the entire camp, it will give Wilson a head start at learn the RCB spot and Cromartie the flexibility of knowing both sides in Rex's system early. When Revis makes his eventual return, Wilson can rotate in with Lowery at the nickel position, until he gets comfortable - and I doubt that will take so long. At that point, during the season, if either Revis or Cromartie get injured, the Jets are in an excellent position depth-wise. If Revis comes back today, which is pretty much the date that determines whether he'll be out a long time or a little, then things go as scheduled. The Jets put themselves in the best position possible to deal with this situation. Maybe is sets Wilson back a bit at his nickel duties, but having Lowery there makes it easier to deal with. Wilson is the eventual starter, anyway, especially if Cromartie lights the world on fire this season. He'd be a sure goner with what he'd expect to be paid and our current situation.
